Community Tasting Notes (average 88.7 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 72 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Wicker Parker on 5/15/2023: Perhaps the cork in my bottle held up better than others here (who complain of an over-the-hill experience), but this was fresh, delicious, and balanced, and it had the subtle minerality and deep fruit I hope for from Gigondas. It's in a wonderful spot. Everything to like, nothing not to like. (440 views)
Tasted by Wine Spam on 3/4/2023: Definitely muted and fading (485 views)
Tasted by HWgeek on 1/24/2022: past its prime, not much flavor on palate or notes on nose.. (964 views)
Tasted by Wine Spam on 4/1/2021: This is still holding up well, but it really doesn't reveal itself until 30 minutes or more in the decanter. Open up earlier next time. (1286 views)
Tasted by HWgeek on 2/8/2020 & rated 90 points: Wow, its nice and subtle but not dead and gone. The nose is very light, with some leather, earth and pomegranate. The palate is delightful. Very complex, full and rich. Found caremel, dark chocolate, leather, tobacco and dark berry flavors. Finish had some pepper and was not at all tannic, but it was smooth and long, i.e. hit all along the tongue didn't feel like it was all up front.
Was really pleasantly surprised. (1584 views)
Tasted by danibus on 2/3/2020 & rated 88 points: Mature and surprisingly still really good. Spice, dark fruit. (1446 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/6/2018: Light browning red. Classic southern Rhône aromas-raspberry fruit, lavender, anise. Medium weight, still vivacious red fruit and a variety of green herbs, faded tannins, uplifting acidity. An outperformer at age 14. Fully mature and much better than I expected at this point. (2531 views)
Tasted by woodsylord on 1/4/2018 & rated 90 points: aromas of lavender, savory smoked herbs, leather, brick dust, some high toned cherry.
palate - very dry, lean, tannins a bit rustic but not supporting the fruit like it used to. still some very subtle candied lavender and cooked cherry in the background. DRINK UP! (2170 views)
Tasted by christyler on 12/16/2017: Nice ruby color. Although this is far from a hot mess, it is also past its prime. (2078 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 12/21/2016: Ruby. This got off to a rough, disjointed start with raisiny aromatics and not much aside from earth on the palate. A half hour of air did it a world of good; what emerged was a middle weight wine that was not, in fact, overripe but full of garrigue and red/blue fruit. Not as good as it was several years ago and probably approaching the autumn (or winter) of its useful life. (2997 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 12/31/2015 & rated 93 points: Wonderful Gigondas (3790 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 11/3/2015 & rated 86 points: Ah, my last bottle from a case of this wine purchased upon release from KLWM. It is not my favorite Rhone, but it has been interesting to try. It is very rough and chewy with notes of tar, garrigue, blackberry fruit and still with a tannic kick. (3356 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 10/5/2015 & rated 87 points: At 11 years, the fruit is fading along with it whatever complexity it had in its youth, but it still brings pleasure. It has notes of tar, leather, kirsch, spices and some chocolaty overtones. The finish is medium and a little bit chewy. (3182 views)
Tasted by pedlund on 2/25/2015 & rated 88 points: Decanted for 90 minutes prior to drinking. Still had some fruit on the nose with a bit of funk and acetone that blew off by the time we drank the first glass. Chewy with a lot of tannins, but I didn't get the complexity I was expecting. Not a bad bottle of wine, but not great. I have two more bottles that I will drink up soon - this is probably peaking right about now. (3725 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 2/3/2015 & rated 87 points: This continues to be a very rustic, chewy, Gigondas. It is the antithesis of elegant, but it does provide a satisfying mid-week quaff. (2745 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 11/12/2014 & rated 88 points: Kirsch, tobacco, chewy or rustic perhaps and that chocolate note too. I agree that it is a likable 10 year old Gigondas. (2172 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/12/2014: Tasted second night after it was opened. Cloudy ruby. Floral, kirsch-like aroma. Succulent, mouthcoating feel. Just a hint of overripeness, but this quickly yields to chocolatey tones, bark, brown spice and tobacco. Long, chewy finish. Pretty remarkable for 10 year old Gigondas-exceptional complexity. (2208 views)
Tasted by A6Rover on 8/16/2014 & rated 89 points: Hearty and full-bodied, especially for a 10 year old wine. Tannins were bold and it tasted a little hot, more so than I would have liked. Still, it worked very well with grilled lamb. Flavors of menthol, raisin, tobacco, herbs, and plums. Very nice in its context. (2375 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 4/8/2014 & rated 88 points: The wine is less complex than a CdP, of course, and it has a chewy texture or mouthfeel. I had notes of salty minerals, tar, leather, and dark fruits. Very rustic, but tasty. (2178 views)
Tasted by ArieS on 3/1/2014 flawed bottle: Corked. (2329 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 11/12/2013 & rated 89 points: I agree that this wine jumps out of the glass. I opened the bottle about an hour ago and it is ready to go. The color is garnet, but I still get a fair amount of tannin on the palate. A very rustic wine with notes of saddle leather, garrigue, black tea and some tar. (2223 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 3/1/2013 & rated 93 points: Is all Gigondas this gorgeous! (2919 views)
Tasted by Lobonick on 1/26/2013 & rated 85 points: This wine jumps out at you with earth and that funky banyard thing. Almost salty minerality and earth. Did I mention earth? If I ate red meats, I would pair this with a charred steak. The wine seems disjointed, but overall enjoyable if you go with all that earthiness. (2786 views)
Tasted by WineLover007 on 10/13/2012 & rated 92 points: smooth, cinnamon spice, long finish, other earthy spices. (3111 views)
Tasted by kdsipe on 9/5/2012 & rated 87 points: Better than expected but not as good as I would like. Moderate but pure aromas of sweet cherry, orange peal, black tea, cola and spice. Almost Burgundian. However the palate is rustic and disjointed with lots of tannin, mint, soy sauce, furniture polish, and stems. Not sure I enjoyed this. (3052 views)

(PALLIERES Gigondas) Loriza Dear Friends, I drank this wine for the third time last night and it reminded me of my first encounter last summer - a wine like this embodies our commitment to the best the wine-world has to offer without inducing a second mortgage. Maybe it was the small Italian water glass I drank this out of that made it so memorable (over three nights) or the fact that the aromatics were still so lovely without a wine stem in sight. The bottle rattled around in the back of my broken-down Lancia for almost a week before I decided to let the magic out of the (admittedly) warm bottle. Shaken and stirred (much to the dismay of 007) I never intended to offer this so it was not a priority. On the other hand, I always wish to to be polite to those that offer me a look into their vinous world, so, on a rainy Monday afternoon I grew tired of seeing it in the back seat - the cork was pulled and boy was I surprised. This wine is one on the more memorable under $20 Grenache-based 2003's and (with four years in the bottle) it's drinking superbly right now. If you adore the kirsch-laced wine of Chëteauneuf-du-Pape circa 1990 (Brunel's 1990 Cuvee Centenaire comes to mind as one of the purest kirsch aromatics I've ever encountered) but wish to pay this price instead of $30-50, this is an excellent place to start. When they chose the site for their winery in the high elevation of the newly anointed La Caunette, it may have actually been too cold. It took a vintage like 2003 to elevate the Loriza to normal levels (scary) - in excellent vintages such as 2001 and 2005, the Loriza is quite good but in a heat-wave year, it's an amazing wine. Low in alcohol (only 13.0-13.5%) and brimming with gorgeous perfume and extract, this wine will captivate from the get-go. I can't compare this to any other wine in Minervois - it is elegant, medium bodied and never tries to bowl you over the head with anything except it's charming style. A beautiful wine with a haunting kirsch-filled bouquet that lasted (open, with just the cork pushed back in) for three nights in the back seat - now that's promise. This winery was just cited by the Revue du Vins de France as one of the top few in all of Minervois and it's easy to see why (it's also interesting to note that other vintages are readily available but not the 2003 - I'm not the only one that has caught on). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for terrific value and unique aromatic complexity: 2003 Khalkhal-Pamies "Loriza" (Minervois) ...at the request of some of our Rhone enthusiasts, we also have a perfect parcel of 2004 Les Pallieres Gigondas at a great price - what should be one of the lowest in the world: 2004 Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone2256 SOFR7789

Domaine les Pallières Gigondas

Location: The most northerly reaches of the appellation; northwest-facing hillside terraces in the district of Les Pallières.

Surface area: A single 334-acre estate comprising 62 acres of vineyards and 272 acres of pine and oak.

Soil and subsoil: The vineyard has been built mainly into single-row terraces, to cope with the very steep slopes. The soil, which is partly covered by limestone rock slides from the Dentelles de Montmirail hill range, is very shallow and sits on a highly compact layer of red clay.

Grape varieties: Grenache Noir (80%), Syrah and Cinsault (10%, coplanted), Clairette (5%), Mourvèdre (5%).

Vine age: 60 years on average.

Vinification: Grapes are hand-picked, with stringent double sorting at the vine. Gentle crushing and selective destemming, followed by 25-30 days' traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete and wood vats. Pneumatic pressing, then systematic malolactic fermentation.

Maturation: In vats for the first 10 months, then in foudres for a further 10-12 months. Bottled unfiltered at 20 months. Marketed at 2 years.

Personality and ageing: Recognised as having one of the appellation's finest terroirs, this is one of the elegant, balanced, mineral and well-structured Gigondas wines. The best vintages can age for more than 20 years.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
