Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 722 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 3/8/2024 & rated 93 points: Aging marvelously. Marmalade, honeycomb and quince on the nose. Unctuous, lingering and balanced on the palate. Persistent finish. Excellent job. (2096 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 2/23/2024 & rated 93 points: Fabulous All Sauternes Tasting Dinner: Part Trois (Brad's Place, St. Paul, MN): Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Oranges, melon, apricot, sweeter and a bit thinner than the '05 Rieussec next to it; tart citrus with very good length. (2275 views)
Tasted by wineappreciation on 2/17/2024 & rated 93 points: Apricot, peaches, orange peal, anise; fruitful and aggressive but pleasing and opulent; very nice indeed (2201 views)
Tasted by hanasowner on 12/24/2023 & rated 84 points: Popped and poured...some lemon and pineapple, but otherwise liquid sugar and way too sweet for my liking. (2379 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 10/22/2023: Vibrant golden color, ripe peaches, apricot marmelade, a really balanced vintage with good intensity, easy to drink; delicious. (3527 views)
Tasted by sjfunkenhauser on 10/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Sweet, but very high acidity leads to it being lifted and fresh. Fresher than the 09. More intense palate, but the nose is a bit more shy. More cohesive. (2937 views)
Tasted by hankj on 9/18/2023 & rated 89 points: Good, not special. I wish it had just a little more acid, though I realize the house style is a bit on the flatter end.of the Sauternes spectrum. To my palate Guiraud has some Muscat like characteristics. Not a bad thing on its face, but give me Climens for instance seven days a week for Sauternes, particularly in 2005. (3224 views)
Tasted by mazik on 9/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Perfect conclusion to a traditional Rosh Hashanah dinner, served with the obligatory Marian Burros plum torte. Tropical fruit, caramel, honey, offset by the bright acidity balancing its intense sweetness. Long finish. (This was an open bottle that had featured at the Monday night wine tasting as the wine of the night.) Agree that this wine will last for many years but I'm not a fan of hyperaged maderized sauternes, and I think this is now at its peak. (2940 views)
Tasted by Condrieu82 on 9/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Expressive notes of fennel and honeycomb in the nose. Palate is dense and layered, with crisp acidity and lots of lemon, blood orange, verbena, and aromatic wood on the long ending. Really excellent already, the balance between acidity and sweetness is really nice and this is an elegant Souternes. (2938 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 8/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Siggy's Annual BBQ (Chez Siggy & Jenny's Place, Mpls, MN): A lovely bottle to cap off a great evening. this has always been tasty and this was right there. Honey, spiced, orange, pineapple, nicely balanced, well layered. (3211 views)
Tasted by Irish_Wine on 7/30/2023 & rated 94 points: Medium amber.

Pronounced on the nose with honey, orange blossom, peach, dried apricot, honey, beeswax, saffron, nutmeg, ginger, mushroom, and hazelnut. Developing.

Pronounced and sweet on the palate. High acidity, high alcohol, full body, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging. (2912 views)
Tasted by Chris on 7/16/2023 & rated 92 points: deep orange color, long and forboding finish, spice background. Enjoyable. (2911 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 7/10/2023 & rated 91 points: From half bottle:
Medium gold color. Butterscotch and apricots in a medium bodied format. Medium sweet. Well balanced with refreshing acidity in the aftertaste. (2932 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 7/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Drank this in Quogue NY with family. Can't find my notes, but we enjoyed this. (2335 views)
Tasted by VeniceCalif on 5/30/2023 flawed bottle: Wet rubber tires. A pity. Texture was still compelling though. (3435 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 4/16/2023 & rated 92 points: When the wife is away... (Broders): The sweetness here seems almost excessive in a desserty, creamy, caramelly creme brulee way. There is just a little spice and chalk. To me, the quality-level is consistent for the producer. (3839 views)
Tasted by COWineLover on 3/28/2023 & rated 88 points: From a 375ml owned over 10 years and stored in a temperature controlled cellar. Amber in color with expected viscosity on pouring. Aromatically this presents a sense of heat with the first whiff. Plowing through the alcoholic scents this displays orange marmalade, butterscotch, crème brûlée, caramel, and baked apple. On the palate there is heat from the alcohol that overtakes the caramel and crème brûlée on the attack. The flabby acidity was one of the biggest surprises of the tasting with a surprising dearth of vibrancy or lift for the wine. Very viscous mouthfeel with an almost honey like consistency in the mid palate. Butterscotch on the short finish. Overall a cloying wine tasting experience today.

My expectation before pouring was elevated, and I must admit some disappointment with the bottle. This bottle seemed to miss in a lot of ways (acidity, alcohol weight, length) tonight. One bottle remaining, and I can’t say I look forward to popping the final cork.

After composing this note I referred back to my April 2020 note. I dare say this wine bears little resemblance to that wine. Perhaps the format has accelerated this development, but the evolution or bottle variation is pronounced. My earlier prediction was for a long life ahead. Judging from this bottle I missed that forecast by a large margin.

Will pour the second glass two nights from now and update as appropriate.

Day 3 - Generally consistent notes from day 1 with the exception the orange marmalade is replaced by candied apricot. Remains flabby and cloying. (3634 views)
Tasted by acorelli on 3/26/2023 & rated 91 points: Honey and more honey. Lacks the tension that a bit more acid would bring. (3363 views)
Tasted by spineguy on 3/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Best showing of this wine yet. Spectacular balance of sweetness, acidity, and integrated tangerine/apricot citrus. Nicely in it's secondary phase and will remain so for a number of years to come. In a great place now. Out of a 375ml. (3481 views)
Tasted by HRT on 3/5/2023: Deep golden hue. Honey and stone fruits on the nose. Very sweet but not cloyingly so. This needs to be chilled. (3244 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 2/27/2023 & rated 93 points: Had a nice weight and power that I sometimes don't get with a Sauternes, some nice acidity was still there. Not so light on its feet and missing a bit of intensity but solid enough. Not something I'd seek out again, but nothing awry - I prefer a bit more intensity. (3406 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 2/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Dispensed half bottle by Coravin. Aromatic nose of honeysuckle, orange marmalade, apricot, honeydew melon, clove and lemon peel. Honeysuckle, apricot, orange marmalade, lemon and clove on the palate. Long layered finish with good acidic balance. Served with crème brûlée. (2980 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 2/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Delicious liquid tangerine and apricot! Consistent with my previous notes. 93/94 (3237 views)
Tasted by Dine&Vine on 1/28/2023 & rated 90 points: Served with crème brûlée. Nice balanced Sauternes, bought recently on auction, but this bottle had SP, as cork was compromised, so not sure how much it was affected by poor storage. (3138 views)
Tasted by btock on 12/31/2022 & rated 90 points: Solid, have had a chance to enjoy this vintage many times. Darker, more brooding and intense. This is a sipper. seems to be in a long drinking plateau, no sign of wavering on the edges. (2759 views)

Château Guiraud

Chateau Guiraud is one of the largest estates in Sauternes and makes a Premier Grand Cru Classé Sauternes. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries the 300-acre estate, which includes 210 acres of vineyards, was owned by a single family, the Guirauds, who earned the estate a reputation for outstanding wine. In 2006 the estate was purchased by four business partners who have continued to produce prestigious wines. Vineyards are planted with 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, which is a notably high percentage of Sauvignon Blanc by the standards of the region. On average the vines are 30 years old. Nearly 10,000 bottles of Chateau Guiraud are produced annually. The estate also produces a dry white wine of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Château Guiraud recently earned organic farming certification, becoming the first of the Premiers Grands Crus Classés in the 1855 Bordeaux classification to do so. Winemaker Xavier Planty says the decision to adopt organic viticultural methods has helped shape the style of the property’s wines, putting greater emphasis on purity, intensity and elegance.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
