Tasted by cephomer on 2/22/2024 & rated 90 points: My contribution to OTBN in WP. Lovely nose of cherries, coffee and leather. Lighter bodied than I expected. Noticeable bricking in the glass. There's still some red fruit but this wine is mostly tertiary now--earthy, leathery, perhaps some tar, with a definite savory quality. Nice length. Drink up as this wine has begun its descent. (589 views)
Tasted by Vinovine on 10/13/2023 & rated 96 points: Cork had failed and anticipated a total loss. What a wonderful surprise to find it drinking at peak upon initial pour without decanting. The perfect amount of O2 had seeped through leaving afFull and complex wine with flavor or hints of sweet ripened fig. (767 views)
Tasted by funderwood10 on 9/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Certainly not as good as previous bottle. This one’s tannins have softened too much, and has lost all grip. Drank after 5 hrs of air (795 views)
Tasted by funderwood10 on 6/5/2023 & rated 93 points: SO GOOD. This is why we drink aged wines. Such balance, cherry jam spread on pencil shavings. Incredibly long finish, and grippy tannins without any astringency. (1054 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 4/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted at 3pm and tasted over 7 hours. Rich, medium dark, slightly translucent garnet. Nose has light red floral/roses, some modest new oak generated elements like vanilla and tobacco, along with black cherry. Nice texture/mouthfeel/density. Palate reflects the nose with a nice core of cherry fruit and some leathery notes on the finish. Still good acidity and tannin almost completely “integrated”/ fallen out as sediment. Tasty and still lively. Nice with duck confit and mushroom pasta. (1543 views)
Tasted by CRL Stc on 2/1/2023 & rated 94 points: PnP. Wonderful wine. Previous notes are spot on. Faded after an hour. (1222 views)
Tasted by justintime97 on 1/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Very tertiary and complex, tertiary blew off over the course of the meal and a more savory fruit showed itself. Beautiful example of what it was, but didn't soar as high as other higher quality bottlings might. Good PQR. (1159 views)
Tasted by rougeamore on 2/13/2022 & rated 94 points: The wine had a medium brick color. It imparted mushroom and cherry notes on the nose. On the palate, there were layers of cherry, mushroom, leather, licorice and molasses all balanced to a medium finish. Currently at the right age for drinking with mature tannins. Barolo fans would enjoy this. (2320 views)
Tasted by ewhite on 1/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Still quite dark red in color, with barely a hint a bricking (barely). Nose is sweet bing cherries, tar, violets and roses, and spiced plum. Powerful, but elegant on the palate, with serious acidity keeping the broad fruit and tannins in check. Tannins are sweet and soft, while still making themselves heard. Medium-long finish, drink now and over the next half decade or so. (2188 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 5/15/2021 & rated 93 points: Removed from the cellar and opened. Classic Italian femininity, with florals, eucalyptus, cherry on the nose. Medium body, with some clear to browning on the rim. Vibrant and lithe, red profile with tart cherry, gaining traction with air. To the cherry, cran/pomegranate side, this is fresh and vibrant still at 24 years old...an impressive showing at this age. 2 more. (2968 views)
Tasted by yaronz on 5/8/2021 & rated 95 points: Wine was fresh and ready to drink. Amazing red fruit, ripe plums, perfume, leather notes and truffles. One of the best Barolo I had. (2831 views)
Tasted by viking92067 on 3/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Acquired new. I was torn between 91 and 92 points. Drink up. Fully mature. Very nice aged Barolo but not a rock star. (3043 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 11/13/2020: Wow...this wine has fantastic. As wonderful as my last bottle 12 years ago. Still quite youthful, but lots more depth. Intense floral nose, deep dark maroon in color with bricking on the edges, silky smooth. Cherry, raspberry, mushroom, truffle. Wish I had more as I think this still has plenty of life left and would love to try another in 10 years. (1348 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 5/30/2020 & rated 91 points: my not from a year ago said it well, but this bottle was one point lower... qualitative comments from last year apply -- "this guy makes basic -- but true to Piedmonte / nebiollo -- wines and when I buy them for reasonable prices from 20 or 30 years ago, they do very well... not that this knocked my socks off but typicity and structure were very good, well balanced against nebiollo red, slightly spicy / tart / dried red fruit... nicely done and really good tonight (night two for this bottle)" (2935 views)
Tasted by Sonoma-W on 5/5/2020 & rated 96 points: So, this redeems our view of this wine. It was interesting, lively, had great tannins, a bit of earthiness, subtle fruit, overall great. By contrast, the more recent vintage of this seemed much more one -dimensional. Has the brand been moved down market? In any event, the 1997 was outstanding (2662 views)
Tasted by Vinovine on 5/1/2020 & rated 93 points: Love the old-world musty tones of this complex and distinctive Nebbiolo. Initial poignant fruit on the pallet subtly succumbs to fine earthly hints of pepper and lightly infused cider that lingers for minutes. A wine to be enjoyed slowly with favorite basil drenched dish or a fun margarita pizza! (2274 views)
Tasted by rinnocenzi on 1/8/2020 flawed bottle: NE of two bottles we opened, musky taste and smell, the other was good (2753 views)
Tasted by rinnocenzi on 1/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Huge wine which can hold for another 10 years or more, very complex old world wine. (2512 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 10/22/2019 & rated 93 points: cork almost soaked through
some funk on the nose blew off within the first 5 minutes
then beautiful soft cherries with an integrated backbone and a long finish
delicious (2182 views)
Tasted by BHRH on 9/7/2019 & rated 92 points: very slight orange/tan rim. slight burned orange peel leads to crushed flowers, a bit of ripe prunes and some cedar on the nose. Rich, slightly ripe deep black fruits with a thick, spicy finish. tannins are extremely well integrated in this somewhat lush, full bodied wine. In perfect drinking condition now! (2145 views)
Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 2/10/2019 & rated 92 points: this guy makes basic -- but true to Piedmonte / nebiollo -- wines and when I buy them for reasonable prices from 20 or 30 years ago, they do very well... not that this knocked my socks off but typicity and structure were very good, well balanced against nebiollo red, slightly spicy / tart / dried red fruit... nicely done and really good tonight (night two for this bottle) (2893 views)
Tasted by VINNICK on 2/2/2019 & rated 89 points: Nice wine, pretty much at its peak. Very light bodied. We decanted and it started opening up nicely after about an hour. (2440 views)
Tasted by Cmainardi on 1/3/2019 & rated 94 points: From magnum. Beautiful aged Barolo. Not getting any better. (2568 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 4/26/2018 & rated 93 points: Virtually identical notes to a bottle I had a few years back. A rich, forward bouquet: sweet cherries and licorice, with a bit of floral aspect. Robust on the palate: tart cherries, glycerin, good acidity. Full-bodied. No oak whatsoever. Balanced and pure, with only modest complexity yet plenty of nuance. (3581 views)
Tasted by aajder on 1/28/2018 & rated 91 points: Great color, minimal fading. The nose is a bit reticent; showing aromas of dark berries, cedar, tobacco, minerals, flowers and a hint of brown spice. This is medium full bodied on the palate with excellent concentration and very good finesse. The fairly long finish features big but ripe tannins. This is still very fresh... (3727 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
