Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 429 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Eric on 4/9/2024 & rated 91 points: Mmm, super peppery, spicy, fruitcake, a touch of dried fruit, old school, so traditional, grilled plum, meaty, black pepper, stern. Some tannin still there on the finish. (529 views)
Tasted by Theamateurwinesnob on 1/13/2024: Plums, stewed cherries, and cedar. Med+ bodied, med acidity, and rounded tannins that cling slightly. I would hope for more acidity but it’s in a good spot. Drink up but don’t think it’s declining. (994 views)
Tasted by cdp1276 on 9/15/2023: Dry cherries and stewed fruits with leather on the palate. Medium lingering tannins with well integrated acids. Still many more years to enjoy. Paired with a queen Anne’s lace cheese that really intensifies the richness of the fruit. (1499 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 8/11/2023 & rated 93 points: Very well balanced with now tertiary flavors. Still good acidity and structure. Believe it or not matched perfectly with raspberry white chocolate cake! I would not keep the bottle more, there is not more to be added unless you are in an experiment with the bottle! (1530 views)
Tasted by jjct on 6/22/2023: Beautiful aromatics, sweet fruit, leather, elegant, long finish, very well balanced. Still a trace of tannins. This bottle is a wonderful mature CdP. (1717 views)
Tasted by awkiii on 6/15/2023 & rated 90 points: One bottle flawed (1652 views)
Tasted by LeroyHilarious on 5/19/2023 flawed bottle: Gone way over the top. Thin and taste of alcohol (1514 views)
Tasted by oenanthe on 4/25/2023 & rated 93 points: Vieux Telegraphe Vertical (The Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street): Something burgundian on the nose, earth and cherry. This sits with the 1990 and 1993 in style, a smooth elegance and an appealing roundness with sweet red fruit, cherry and cranberry. This is just in an excellent spot, a marvellous glass of mature Chateaneuf with the mellowness of age having largely overtaken the brawn of youth but with the odd reminder - did I get a smidgen of heat on the finish or am I imagining it? Possibly the latter as this was my WOTN, just edging out the 2005 and the 1990. Every single person at the table gave a podium place to this, and it was no surprise it was also the group WOTN. (1511 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 4/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Vieux Telegraphe Vertical (Sun Street Hotel, Liverpool Street, London): Red fruits, some hawthorn a touch of cinnamon and such elegance. Palate has lovely poise and breadth, some acidic prickly and after half an hour in the glass a little sweated chorizo too. My second and the group's favourite wine of the night. (1374 views)
Tasted by llink on 1/15/2023 & rated 93 points: PNP. Kirsch, rosemary, violets and iodine on the nose. Still ruby red but starting to see some orange around the rim. Beautiful silky texture, good volume without being heavy. Lots of kirsch fruit flavors with a savory, spicy element. Slight tannins on the finish. The last of 6 bottles, but I still have a magnum to open in another 5 years. (1487 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 12/16/2022: A leather and savory to me right now. The palate really soft and supple. Long with some minerality. (1802 views)
Tasted by SimonS on 8/28/2022 & rated 92 points: At peak of its powers. Black cherry on the nose. Spice and just the merest hint of leather. (1958 views)
Tasted by palfr2 on 5/16/2022: I would want to like this but it is tough. Appearance is cloudy. It is evolved but not much poking out outside of the usual Grenache heat. Cabbage like quality to the nose. Then on the palate it is Campari or Martini Rosso. Herbs but with a simple backdrop of sweetness and alcohol. Not a CdP that has aged in a Burgundian way or that still carries its fruit and power unabashedly. Hoping it is an off bottle (2328 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 5/11/2022 & rated 94 points: Absolutely magical. This is what CndP is all about. (2323 views)
Tasted by Manuaia on 2/6/2022 & rated 89 points: 11th bottle of a case i bought almost 20 years ago. Gorgeous color with not a hint of orange hue. As with past bottles there is a pile of sediment in each glass. Fresher than past bottles but not much immediate fruit. Almost burgundian with no garrigue ,cigar and olive that usually dominate this wine in its youth. Fresh fruit Cherry plum no baked pruny flavors. Slightly band aid. Wine is a bit aggressive and i can tell the fruit is waning. To this day ive never had an aged cdp better than one in its youth (2393 views)
Tasted by Thoughtful on 2/2/2022 & rated 92 points: Found in a corner of cellar. Showing age brown/red. Beginnings of oxidation but still a lovely drink. Full bodied and complex leather tobacco cherry.
Drink now! (2215 views)
Tasted by jamesabdavis on 11/28/2021: Really pretty nose of raspberries, tobacco and garrigue. Resolved and elegant on the palate with sweet fruit and great balance. Long garriguey finish. Beautiful. (2066 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 11/25/2021 & rated 93 points: By far the best bottle of the lot. Everything rounded out, more noes of tobacco, leather, currants, raspberries and some camphor. A lovely wine that clearly needed the extra time since the prior bottle. (1535 views)
Tasted by Simoncino on 10/17/2021 & rated 87 points: Disappointing, one-dimensional, and austere. Sorry to have held on to it for so long. Tasted along with a non-Hommage Beucastel from the same year that outclassed it. (1873 views)
Tasted by Tree512 on 10/3/2021 & rated 90 points: Loads of fruit and structure. Much better than previous bottles that tasted roasted/disjointed. (1481 views)
Tasted by devraj on 10/1/2021 & rated 92 points: Hazy brick red in color. Gorgeous aromas of red raspberries, sandalwood, garrigue, florals and incense. Perfectly medium-bodied and silky palate shows sweet-sour bright red berries, medium acidity, no tannins and a very long and perfumed finish. (1434 views)
Tasted by SimonS on 8/20/2021 & rated 93 points: For my taste, these are just reaching drinking time. 10 years to go at least. (1408 views)
Tasted by Milos on 7/26/2021 & rated 91 points: Light orange amber colour; clearly mature. Strawberry and barnyard palate, silky smooth with no tannins left; decent finish. (1461 views)
Tasted by MHR on 5/9/2021 flawed bottle: Same as previous review. Wine kept horizontal in 16 degree C cellar. Waited 18 years since purchase and undrinkable. Corked. (2188 views)
Tasted by vmfa_jjr on 5/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Maybe a little over the hill, but oh so good still: stone fruit, licorice, olive. Glad I have one more! (1713 views)

Rockss and Fruit (4/19/2006)
(Vieux Telegraphe) Nose was a medley of dark flowers, granite, dark herbs and redcurrants. Brooding nose that developed wonderful floral aromas after extended aeration. The fruit has a wonderful restrained sweetness but definetly has that extra sweet lift in the mid-palate that makes this a great wine. Tannins are perfectly ripe and the minerality extends nicely on the finish. Great wine with fantastic structure and sure to last 10-15 years.

Rockss and Fruit (4/25/2005)
(Vieux Telegraphe) Nose of stones, red cherries, hay, aromatic herbs and even some lavender. Galet-like stony tannins in the mouth with beautiful pure fruit with a charming rustic edge to it. Ample acidity and fine-tuned grainy tannins with wonderful amplitude in the mouth. Like someone spiked some Pommard with CDP.

Rockss and Fruit (9/25/2004)
(Vieux Telegraphe) Gorgeous nose of crushed red berry fruit, stones, mint, red flowers, leaves, orange peel and minerals. Wonderful complexity on the nose. A hint of bbq sauce develops after a while. Tons of Christmas spice and berry fruit. Great length, tannins and stony minerality. Tremendous structure. What a showing for this wine. Ideally needs another five years but delicious today.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
