Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 55 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bon vivant on 2/3/2022 & rated 91 points: Old school with dark red fruit, lots of earthiness and some bret hints but not in a bad way. Got much cleaner with air and settled into a nice balance. The old vine complexity is evident and this could easily be a dead ringer for a CNDP. May be fun to insert into a blind tasting :o).  Tasted by glou.sf on 9/21/2020 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind. Dark berries, some leather notes, and a hint of green flavors on the nose. Medium+ acidity and quite structured tannins with red berries and cherries on the palate. Very nice finish. The nose reminded me much of a Syrah with a bit of age on it, but the palate was much brighter. Interesting wine. (980 views)
Tasted by alanr on 12/18/2019 & rated 90 points: Been a few years since I had one of these, fun to see how it has developed. Still quite dark, not quite opaque, showing deep strawberry garnet color. This wine had a tendency toward showing brett, but has been stored perfectly at 55 degrees. There’s a bit of roasted mushroom earthiness, but it’s relatively clean on the nose. Palate is still quite youthful and fresh, a mix of blackberry fruit with a bright raspberry streak, excellent acidity, some lightly chalky tannins. The electric/volcanic note I remember is still there, but faded into the background. A fascinating wine starting to reach maturity, but with years to go. (1257 views)
 Tasted by M_CRamsey on 12/2/2017 & rated 90 points: Delicious! (1470 views)
Tasted by alanr on 8/6/2017 & rated 93 points: Dark crimson violet color, no sign of brett on the nose, which this wine can show. Every time I open one of these I'm sorry I have one less, so much great intensity, energy, deep red/purple fruit, with strong volcanic notes, violets, spice, still very youthful, with good acidity and medium fine tannins. Glad to have several more to continue following into the future. (1868 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 4/10/2017 & rated 90 points: Full nose of meat, funk, earth, licorice and plum fruit. Smooth with good concentration. Earthy and leathery. Good spice in the lingering finish. Quite nice for its level. (1708 views)
Tasted by alanr on 2/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Dark, opaque garnet, clean as a whistle on the nose, very nice dark red fruit, fine tannins, iron, iodine, rocky/volcanic, streamlined, sinewy, middle weight, a bottle with a lot of youth still. Delicious, interesting stuff, I always love breaking one of these out. (2143 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/16/2016 & rated 87 points: Dark black color. Roasted and smoked meat with plum and black pepper. Came across like a pleasant Côtes du Rhône at its peak. Good with food. (2056 views)
Tasted by Deadhead on 8/3/2014 & rated 88 points: Our impression was consistent to the last time we drank this wine. (2152 views)
Tasted by drdebs on 11/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Reminded me of why I love Cotes du Roussillon, with its funky, full bore berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Nicely lively in the mouth, with low tannins but nice acidity. Perfect autumn wine for mushroom dishes and earthy stews. (2410 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 7/26/2013 & rated 90 points: Lovely bottle. dark chery plum colour, just a hint of garnet on the rim. Nose is soft, some garrigue, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit. Medium fruit on the palate, soft, but nicely juicy and soft fine tannins. Long juicy finish, redolent of ripe plums, but with a tasty anise, meaty note on the finish. Drying out, would say drink up.  Tasted by cbbrown3 on 7/7/2013 & rated 93 points: The wine is a deep violet color. The nose on this wine is absolutely stunning, probably the best of the year, so far. The nose is full of black raspberries, cherries, minerals, garrigue, game, mint, dried flowers, licorice, and some earthiness. This has medium body, moderate to solid tannins, and very good acidity. The palate has multiple layers of fruit and savory elements that take turns stealing the show. The finish has very nice length and leans more on the savory elements with the fruit providing some nice background sweetness. This still seems to be on the young side so I'd give it some air or preferably let it sleep for another couple of years. (2037 views)
Tasted by alanr on 6/5/2013 & rated 92 points: Can be a bit brett infected, but this bottle is clean as a whistle, with a dark berry compote nose, touch of garrique; palate is medium-full bodied, chocked with dark red fruits, hints of iron and herbs, minerality, and a nice bright lift on the finish. Still some moderately mouth gripping tannins, but drinking nicely. A favorite of mine, and this doesn't disappoint. Roussillon blend of old vine Syrah, Carignan and Grenache. (2305 views)
Tasted by alanr on 3/30/2013 & rated 92 points: First night this showed what appeared to be a little brett, with a slight steely/bitter note, though still drank well, with plenty of dark, reserved, brooding fruit. 24 hours later, it is much cleaner, so I wonder if the initial impressions were more sulfur than brett. Oozes dark, deep, black cherry fruit, a nice streak of acidity that brings out more mouth-watering flavors, some medium but fine tannins. Glad to have several more of these, wish I could find more recent vintages here in the States. (1808 views)
Tasted by Deadhead on 12/11/2012 & rated 88 points: Funky and rustic - in a good way. Not what I normally would drink. Enjoyed it. Lots of sediment - wasn't paying attention and got a mouthful. (1484 views)
Tasted by drdecanto on 11/10/2012 & rated 92 points: Loved this wine. Bought 4 in 2007. No other notes. I've had other offerings from them, but liked this the most. Deeply extracted dark fruits with great mouth-feel and balance between fruit and acid. Very pleasing. (1479 views)
Tasted by alanr on 6/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Touch of funk on the nose, but not distracting; reserved dark raspberry/strawberry notes, terrific cut and balance with nice acidity and fine tannins, then a leathery streak of minerality on the finish. This bottle is from a case I purchased off Winebid for $10/bottle from someone who obviously prefers larger scale, riper wines. Give me this every day and I'm happy. (1814 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 3/19/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted about 2 hours. Deep ruby color. Raspberry, cherry, licorice, meat juices, dried herbs, smoke, potpourri, and a bit of earthy underbrush on the open and expressive nose. Medium body with solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. Juicy fruit on the palate with a big blast of meat juice and dried herbs. Nice length on the finish which feature the savory elements with the fruit in the background. Much better after two hours than it was after one hour in the decanter. Still tastes extremely young. (1917 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 1/29/2012: Last one. Que lastima. Ready. (1913 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 1/18/2012 & rated 88 points: Rustic but tasty. Drank a little cool, butcthat workedcwell with food. A little sweaty and smokey, but with nice juicy fruit. (1866 views)
Tasted by JDB on 12/1/2011 & rated 89 points: By far the best bottle yet (2176 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 11/15/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark red violet color; brett, earthy, garrigue, tobacco nose; brett, tobacco, light pepper, mineral palate, like a maturing St. Joseph; medium-plus finish (971 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 10/23/2011: V. v. dark! darker than I remember... But mature, rich, full; ready (1997 views)
Tasted by SteveG on 9/19/2011 & rated 86 points: From memory. Bright garnet. Tart cranberry, black cherry and raw beef nose. Initial palate is tannic, sweaty and rustic, somewhat overpowering the soft syrah fruit. (2123 views)
Tasted by JDB on 8/7/2011: not my thing, tastes kinda murky. Pleasant dose of garrigue w/ dark fruit but nothing clean?? about the palate (2075 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
