Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by englishman's claret on 3/23/2024 & rated 89 points: Served blind, I admittedly thought it was Bordeaux - though Cabernet-based and 1980s were obvious. Black fruited at its debut, transitioning to red fruit, inflected with loam, Brettanomyes, and black olive. The Brett slightly overwhelmed at the start, though it became less dominant with time. (371 views)
Tasted by acyso on 11/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Vinetasters: Old Cabernet (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Sweet, dried dates on the nose. Quite expressive with good overall freshness here. I thought based on the darker fruit and liveliness that this was something from the 90s. A good dose of pyrazines as well. My 3rd, group's 10th. (1141 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 9/6/2023: Hard to get a good read on this bottle as it was tasted at an indoor event which topped out ~ 84 degrees F room temp.. too warm. Immediately upon opening a eucalyptus and mint note comes to the fore, intensity does fade over time and shows more earth and tobacco as time goes on. Soft and medium bodied with earth, red plums, still good structure and no real noticeable finish. Even in a better tasting environment this bottle would have showed close to a decade past peak.  Tasted by jlgnml on 8/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Chez Garard older Zinfandels and Cali Cabs: Really good for its age. Enjoyable in a flight of older Cali Cabs. (1913 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/20/2022 & rated 90 points: Mid-Aged Zinfandel and Cali Cab Dinner (Casa Garard - Northfield IL): Still showing enough black cherry and plum on nose and palate, fresh enough with good enough power. This is starting to lose steam, but still has good length with a persistent finish. (3047 views)
Tasted by oz11779 on 10/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet color to the edge; lovely nose, lilac, leather, smoke. Minty, long, a little austere, perhaps aging, but still excellent. (2595 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 5/15/2021 & rated 95 points: Medium garnet in color with no bricking at all. Nose of dark fruit, leather, mushrooms, forest floor, espresso, and a hint of barnyard. It kept gaining complexity in the glass as the night progressed. Silk on the palate, dry, lean but full bodied, medium plus acidity and with a solid amount of extract. Smooth and long lingering finish. Amazing purity, freshness and depth. Put this against two '82 Bordeaux and Mondavi took the crown. Outstanding effort. (2871 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 5/17/2020 & rated 94 points: Pristine bottle purchase for virtual tasting. Did a coravin and should have decanted. Wow. Just sublime and long lasting. It’s a buy even though it is old and mature. (3279 views)
Tasted by Torchy on 3/15/2019 & rated 93 points: Uncles Fine Wine Spring BYO (Home): Perfect bottle. Horse stables, tobacco, creme de cassis, blue fruit and light hints of iron and metal. Surprisingly fresh, with slender fruit. Streak of tobacco and snuff. Supersmud! (3935 views)
Tasted by acyso on 2/11/2018 & rated 88 points: Vinetasters: Robert Mondavi Reserve (1970-1998) (Skokie, IL): Served blind in a Mondavi lineup. Both the colour and nose indicate that this is a younger wine, with darker fruit aromatics and just a little bit of oak still showing. A little cedary, with fruit that is deeper and darker than many of the others. For the first time, there's also a little bit of vanilla that pops up. On the palate, this is almost certainly a younger example, with its more luscious fruit and ever-so-slightly modern elements. It's certainly not over the top, and this may be suffering from youth more than anything. My 10th, group's 11th. (5791 views)
Tasted by JEP007 on 12/20/2017 flawed bottle: Sourced from Winebid.
3.0L.
Dead as a doornail. Slightly corked, no complexity and sour.
Bummer... (4389 views)
Tasted by raek on 12/14/2017: No tannins left. Over the hill. Earthy, mushrooms, and soy sauce on the bouquet. Dirt? Over the hill... (4276 views)
Tasted by Aravind Asok on 6/3/2017: '82 Bordeaux and Friends (Rene's): After all the '82 Bordeaux, this came off as just too ripe; cherry liqueur on the nose and on the palate, suprisingly tannic. Very good, but maybe suffered by comparison. (4957 views)
Tasted by 82Latour on 4/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Classic aged Cali cab; brown sugar, mulasses, chocolate jumpig off in the glass. Eucalyptus and mint on the palate, with fading tried tannins. Mid finish. (5489 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 10/18/2015 & rated 92 points: From Mag: Mint, eucalyptus, cedar, mushrooms, red fruits. Decent length. Loved the nose. (4970 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 12/13/2014 & rated 93 points: nose of black tea, soy sauce, earthy (damp leaves). Tannins only partly integrated, medium bodied. (6071 views)
Tasted by Carmen400 on 3/6/2014 & rated 82 points: Cork was intact with very little seepage; aroma of raisins which eventually wore off. Wine was decanted and poured thru a Vinturi. Some fruit taste, brownish color; thin legs, some after taste. Safe to say it was past its prime. (7451 views)
Tasted by cooberp on 3/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Tasted after some aeration. Bricked. Smells like molten chocolate cake. Blackcurrant fruit, acid, midweight, decent concentration. A bit sour. (6516 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/16/2013 & rated 93 points: Chicago Wine Flock..."Wines that Jim Wanted to Compare" ("Chateau La Grange" - La Grange IL): Served double blind. Open 3 hours before serving, then tasted over 2 1/2 hours. Eucalyptus and black fruit to start with some forest floor hints. Plum and mushroom hints on palate. Very classically good California Cabernet. Over time the forest floor aspects became more pronounced and this became slightly less exciting. (6227 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 10/20/2013: Last bottle of 4 purchased earlier this year. Unfortunately, this one was the least drinkable and was very clearly over the hill. Not much left in this to enjoy, just a lot of funky, sour, mushroom-y bits that weren't especially enjoyable. (4978 views)
Tasted by Oskiwawa on 8/10/2013 & rated 91 points: Opened and let breathe in the bottle for 2 hours. Very nice mature cab. Dark color with very little bricking. This one will last for several more years. Classic old style cab palate. Bice acidity and some remaining tannins. Nice surprise. (4451 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 4/28/2013 & rated 91 points: Pristine bottle, but not quite up to the standard set by the last one. A bit over the hill but very pleasant to drink still. Looks like it's on a bottle-by-bottle basis now. (3676 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 12/1/2012 & rated 94 points: Low neck fill, and cork saturated only only on the bottom 1/4". Where did this come from, some frozen wasteland with 100% humidity? This wine completely defies its age - amazing. Only some hints of bricking around the rim, still a very young color. Rich and smooth on the palate, but still with enough tannins and freshness to warrant another 5-10 years (or 3+ hours in the decanter). (4380 views)
Tasted by npettit on 11/19/2012 & rated 93 points: Still drinking well! Enjoyed (4031 views)
Tasted by kkazaks on 10/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Tasted about 2 weeks ago.

Okay, I tried a bottle of this a few months ago and was less impressed than I was with this one.

By 82, Mondavi was obviouslly influenced by Bordeaux and making wine differently than the early 70's. Some of those 70's era Cabs (from RM and others) have a nice light weightlessness that when done well just slide over the palate - with flavors of bright red fruits, leather, red earth, and tobacco. But the 82 was darker and more purple and obviously differently made.

So the first time I tried it - caught up as I was at the time in the magic of fine 70's era Napa Cabs - it seemd too ponderous for me. And this bottle too seemed that way on day 1. But on day 2 it was better - still dark but more seamless, with layers of flavors on the midpalate, which I didn't catch to the same degree with bottle one. On this night I preferred the 82 Reserve to the 74 Mondavi Napa, which was a first for my tasting this year. At any rate, am currenty interested in searching out more 82 Reserves - 74 Napas, not so much, unless the price is right. (3799 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
