Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 802 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by CHINACAT on 4/20/2024 & rated 93 points: Ripe red berries, dry earth and some peppery notes, fresh, elegant and complex. Still has plenty of time ahead of it. Excellent bottle. (488 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 3/31/2024 & rated 92 points: this one needed at least 2-3 hours air in decanter (vs last in December) but came around and delivered a beguiling and layered cherry fruit. (1403 views)
Tasted by njmaslanka on 3/30/2024 & rated 93 points: This is in a fantastic spot. Short decant needed. (1288 views)
 Tasted by MattB72 on 3/30/2024: (1242 views)
Tasted by peterk on 3/25/2024: From magnum - still drinking beautifully - soft, perfectly integrated, still plenty of fruit (1676 views)
Tasted by oenanthe on 3/23/2024 & rated 94 points: Medium red, some signs of age, pleasing on the eye. The fruit is transitioning to a red phase versus prior notes, it is a lighter wine today than in 2021 and I think the better for it. Succulent, juicy, strawberry and hints of darker cherry, but without being jammy in any way. Still has some tannin about it which marries well with the fruit. There is smoke, soil, and herbs. The high alcohol isn't apparent, everything is nicely balanced, and the mouthfeel is nothing short of excellent.

Decanted 3 hours before dinner which was certainly beneficial as the first test taste was quite strict and the wine definitely filled out and improved with air. My last bottle from the case, the penultimate drunk three years ago and this last one was definitely better for the extended time in bottle. You could keep this for another three years at least. With roast lamb and a rich bean dish. Fab. (1578 views)
Tasted by vinohabanero on 3/11/2024: Barnyard nose, rose petal and dried bing cherry follow licorice. Certainly getting tertiary at this point. Almost has amarone style qualities at this point. Perhaps a few years past its prime, drink up any remaining bottles (2024 views)
Tasted by Fulcrum on 3/5/2024 & rated 91 points: Poured from a 375ml. Initially the wine hard a barnyard nose and seemed bretty. Mouth was dried red fruit (plums and cherries). With 30 minutes in a burgundy glass the nose opened up and a mature and deep CDP was revealed. I don’t think it’s at the end of its life, but I don’t think it’s getting any better, at least from a 375. I would drink up if you have any splits. (2002 views)
Tasted by GooseGoose on 3/3/2024 & rated 93 points: Medium ruby, almost garnet color in the glass due to the age. Beautiful, red tint with a slightly higher viscosity. Slight bit of sediment even after straining into our decanter.

Lots of raspberry and cherry aromas on the nose. Dried herbs.

Medium to full body. Well balanced tannins providing just a slight grip that really compliments the wine's long taste profile well. Still a bit of alcohol and acidity showing through in the beginning but after 30+ minutes of decanting begin to fade into nice subtle levels.

A great Chateauneuf Du Papa that is ready to drink now. Decant 30-60 minutes before indulging. Pairs well with a meat-forward, carb-heavy dinner with friends. Enjoy! (1976 views)
Tasted by YagerWine on 2/29/2024 & rated 93 points: In the zone. Dark fruit, tannins resolved but not flabby. This didn't feel tired, it felt like a really pretty wine drinking where it should. Pop those corks! (3087 views)
Tasted by whudock on 2/19/2024 & rated 94 points: drinking beautifully. Dark cherry, plum and a bit of apricot fruit, lots of earth, leather and a touch of iron notes. perfectly balanced, long finish. (2233 views)
Tasted by oakville72 on 2/17/2024 & rated 92 points: Very nice but beginning to show its age. Enjoyed with a sous vide chuck roast. (1896 views)
Tasted by TobbeVin on 2/10/2024 & rated 94 points: Drank it in a tasting.
Eye: dark garnet
Nose: M+, dark fruit, meat, a little sweat vanilila, baking powder,
Mouth: Acid M+,Tannin M+,Int M+, raisins, a little alcoholic heat.
Finish: Long soft with a little alcoholic heat.
A really nice wine. (2169 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 2/10/2024 & rated 89 points: Very deep and dark ruby with zero color degradation. Sweet, ripe raspberries and red cherries and a touch of smokiness on the nose. Very fruit-forward with red cherries leading a panoply of red berriy notes. It lacks the nuance I have come to associate with Beaucastel but is still a well-made wine. (2017 views)
Tasted by Coupe 60 on 2/8/2024 & rated 93 points: Decanted through filter and let sit for about 20 minutes. Surprisingly could have used a little more time... Had with grilled Flannery Beef Hanger steaks, and went great. Dark fruit, maybe even a hint of plums...but well structured great acidity.... Last glass was the best glass... this has come miles and miles form the first bottle that i opened 10 years ago... I think it still has a fair amount of life left... Sorry to see it go (2050 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 1/25/2024 & rated 96 points: Out with friends. This delighted us. (2424 views)
Tasted by chevalier_errie on 1/20/2024 flawed bottle: Corked (2452 views)
Tasted by Highlander on 1/13/2024: Fully mature, on the decline side of mature. Still Excellent. Needs no more than a 20 minute decant. (2408 views)
Tasted by sdonahue on 1/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Not aS good as the last bottle. Unsure why (2659 views)
Tasted by SMagowan on 12/30/2023 & rated 96 points: Delighted that this bottle was back to the standards of our earlier ones. Makes you feel content and happy. We decanted this bottle through a filter. Great. (2502 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 12/28/2023 & rated 97 points: 30 minute decant.
Lovely deep purple color, with a touch of garnet; plum and roast meat savory notes on the nose.
Deliciously integrated luscious dark fruit up front with loads of savory notes on the mid-palate:tobacco, cedar, mushroom, loam and mineral notes ,all balanced by rich fruit. This is a tour de force! I still have a couple of bottles. Wish I had more. I’m going out to buy a few bottles of the most recent release!
I think this wine is at its peak, and will hold this level for another decade. (2406 views)
Tasted by jkvedar on 12/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Still in great shape. (2162 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 12/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Part of a Northern vs Southern Rhone dinner with my wine group. For most of us, this was the WOTN, although I ever so slightly preferred the 2006 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines. I"m glad I held onto a few bottles of this (as opposed to drinking them already) as it is aging very well. I'm sure it has years of life ahead of it. (2182 views)
Tasted by Acove on 12/17/2023 & rated 94 points: Haven't had a wine of this quality in while. Decanted off sediment and brought to a french restaurant. The nose was decidedly french with slightly underripe cherries, raspberries, strawberries, spices, tobacco, and also some blue fruit character that gave away the grenache. The palate was beautiful. Superb concentration, glorious tension, and remarkable length, this is what a legendary wine should be made of. The only criticism I had was the complexity here was a bit underwhelming for a wine of this caliber with this age. I didn't get a lot of garrigue or meatiness that I was expecting, but the purity of fruit and the elegance on the palate made it hard to put the glass down. I haven't had any more modern Beaucastel but if its anything like this it is certainly worth $100. This wine should be able to go for a few more years but drink now just in case, you dont want to miss out on a wine like this. (2405 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 12/9/2023 & rated 92 points: en point with minimal decant
lucid fruit and clean finish. Extremely satisfying (2534 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
