Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by dnlng on 12/31/2022 flawed bottle: It's either flawed or way over the hill. The color was dark brown. Sherry nose. It still contained acidity and light tannins. However, no fruits. 4-hour decant got rid some of the sherry notes but it's still no fruits nor structure. (529 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 7/8/2022 & rated 93 points: Barolo 96-04 Theme lunch at Nicolas. Tasted semi-blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with wide garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean medium+ intensity, with aromas of nutty oak, red plums, ripe red cherries, fragrant earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red plums, ripe red cherries, earth, nutty oak. Long finish.
Very good quality. Modern styled nicely oaky Barolo in a ripe vintage. Overall feels balanced and ready, and could develop a bit more but perhaps the oak may never fully integrate/dissipate in. Still jazzy and sweetish after 72 hrs of air. (1156 views)
Tasted by SeattlePaul on 10/8/2021 & rated 91 points: Considering the vintage, this was quite nice. Dark fruits and a bit of raisin were notable but not out of balance. Fully mature and ready to drink. Probably not going to stick around for too much longer, as it wasn't the best year. (1207 views)
Tasted by Wine Dingo on 12/31/2016 & rated 90 points: Fully mature, elegant, deep and tary. (3576 views)
Tasted by Kevinmcgurn on 8/27/2016 flawed bottle: Ughh (3780 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 9/30/2015 & rated 91 points: Fully open aromatics of flowers, tobacco, red cherries, sweet spices and some smoke. It's full-bodied and still has medium acidity as well as medium+ tannin that is not dry (surprisingly, because of the vintage). Good length. A full-bodied and pretty massive Cannubi but still has surprising balance and freshness for the vintage. It doesn't have the complexity of the best vintages but aged really nicely. (4712 views)
Tasted by aschie30 on 8/16/2015: Surprisingly good for this so-so vintage. Not the best example of Barolo but exceeds expectations. Drink now though--don't hold it any longer. (3961 views)
Tasted by vanpe003 on 3/19/2015 & rated 92 points: Nice overall flavor profile - relatively rich fruit anchored by a dollop of oak. Adds complexity with air / time in the glass, without losing depth. Lacks a bit in overall structure / backbone, specifically acidity as tannins do make an appearance the longer this is in the glass. For me, a near term drinker, but a very pleasant one. Don't see a lot of reason to hold this. I'll be drinking my remaining by 2017. (4134 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 10/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Tra il rubino ed il granato. Al naso rosa, viola appassita, marasca, incenso e camino spento, spezie dolci, menta e the earl gray. Intenso, robusto, appena un po’ carente di acidità (2722 views)
Tasted by MWiking on 10/18/2014 & rated 94 points: På doften får man ingen känsla av att detta är en sämre årgång, inget varmt alls utan choklad, örter, menthol, blommor, apelsinskal, läder och körsbär är det man känner. Riktigt Stor doft.
På smaken känner man att vinet är lite varmt men absolut inte kokt,
riktigt fin 03a (2584 views)
Tasted by tastark on 3/15/2014 & rated 88 points: 2003 Piedmont Party (Troy & Gina's): I was looking forward to this wine, but given the location of Ms. Boschis's vines in central Cannubi (a low lying vineyard) I was not expecting great things from this incredibly hot vintage.

The wine was well made. The care she took was evident, but I think the vintage got the best of her, as it did many in 2003. The color was deep for Barolo. The nose was pleasant and typical, but not exceptional. Same on the palette. In the end, this was a very good, but not great, wine. (3060 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 12/4/2013 & rated 90 points: Nose: Well balanced with dark red cherries, red berries, roasted herbs, and bits of tar. There is a perfumed quality with a red fruit base.

Taste: Medium/Full bodied with medium+ acidity and hard tannins. The tannins don't feel like they will will ever truly soften with dark red cherries, red berries, roasted herbs, and some incense on the back end.

Overall: This is a really good 03. It is what it is and it doesn't have that extra gear to make it really good. The acidity and tannins do creep in and show themselves in a big way, so it may be interesting to see where this goes with a few more years. (3037 views)
Tasted by chifred on 3/29/2013: 56F, P&P. Brownish rust red. Nice nose with leather, earth and current. Light body with drying tannins and acid. Some earth coming through. Moderate finish. Think it will open up. (3078 views)
Tasted by SABRCW on 3/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Very nice barolo. Not quite as good as the 2004 vintages, but has some life left. Very enjoyable. (2884 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 10/15/2012 & rated 90 points: Granato tipicamente non impenetrabile. Al naso prugna matura, ciliegia, ginepro, menta, tabacco kentucky, cuoio. Bocca austera ma equilibrata tra freschezza, sapidità ed alcol, buona la progressione e la persistenza (3310 views)
Tasted by KurtK on 8/1/2012 & rated 89 points: Noted a lot of cherry (2782 views)
Tasted by Ludi on 12/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Light garnet in color, this shows dark cherry, rose, mint, tobacco, aniseed. Very fresh, almost tart, with strong tannic grip, has a good length and a satisfying finish (3194 views)
Tasted by avp on 4/14/2011: Cherry and raspberry fruit on the slightly lifted nose giving slight florality, balanced oak, baking spice, chocolate, mushroom, stone dust and graphite.
Mid-weight palate with balanced acidity and firm grip of tannin. Sour cherry, some raisiny character and cinnamon oak notes. Long tangy finish.
A solid straightforward Barolo - tight sure, but already quite approachable. Will it gain more complexity with time? (3121 views)
Tasted by mariolanza on 1/18/2011 & rated 88 points: Very dry and austere, needs time (3178 views)
Tasted by mpastoret on 10/1/2010 & rated 86 points: Basically popped and poored. Enjoyed with pasta/red sauce/ italian sausage. Did not decant for very long. Very nice color. Lot's of plum and cherry aroma in the beginning. Lot's of tannins early. 1 hour in; starting to mellow a bit. 2-3 hrs did not notice much more change. Conclusion: Needs to age a bit. Will try it again i n 2012. When compared to price I rate the wine an 85. (3409 views)
Tasted by LeatherPalate on 7/19/2010 & rated 91 points: Similar to previous notes but this got 6 hours in a decantor and appeared to be more open than on other occasions. (3546 views)
Tasted by LeatherPalate on 3/20/2010 & rated 90 points: This needed a good two hour decant to get going. At first this wine showed a pretty good touch of oak but later blew off and started to show nice depth of dark cherries, herbs, funky pond, tar, creosote-fireplace,and a little riccola cough drop.Palate has some nice firm tannins which mellowed a bit with air. We also got some nice pure cherry flavors with tar, baking spice and fig components.
A pretty killer wine considering we paid under 30 for it. The nose continued to evolve throughout the night which made it quite enjoyable for Amy and I.This should definitely improve with more cellar time. (3645 views)
Tasted by Papies on 2/1/2010 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 45minutes
Felt closed and weak. A bit dissapointing at this tasting not sure if it has anything more to give. (3481 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 1/17/2010 & rated 90 points: Duck Juice and Barolos (Shane's): nose: robust with an intensity to it and richer tones of plump red cherries, roasted herbs, spice tones and bits of tar. Good depth and obviously youthful right now. Has a real power behind it right now that is almost too much, but pulls back a bit

taste: Rich with chewy tannins and medium+ acidity with powerful tones of red cherries, roasted herbs, tar, some bits of star anise, and a hint of oak on the back end. Young and rich right now that gives it an amped up feel

overall: This was popped and poured. It showed pretty well for pop n pour, but is certainly young. It could be approachable with an aggressive decant, but a few years should round it into form a lot better. Has the ability to be a real interesting barolo when it calms down a bit and some more layering happens. Its not a long distance runner, but definitely worth having around in the mid-term (4154 views)
Tasted by S&SErnst on 1/11/2010: it was very light in color (normal) and unexpectedly weak. Was better after decanting for a few hours (3). Would not purchase again. The start was very soft and there was no complexity. Boring sums it up pretty well. (3658 views)

E. Pira & Figli (Chiara Boschis)

Producer website

Source: VinConnect
Chiara Boschis is widely recognized as one of the first women producers in Barolo, though she comes from eight generations of winemakers. In 1981, the Boschis family acquired the E. Pira & Figli estate, occupying some of the most prestigious land in Barolo. In 1990, Chiara took over the operation on her own, bringing dedication, charm, patience and determination to every aspect of production in order to raise the quality and image of the winery to that which it enjoys today. In 2010, Chiara’s younger brother Giorgio decided to join her, contributing a wealth of experience both in the vineyards as well as in the cellar.

Chiara is an artisan grower, whose philosophy is to craft wines that combine the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability, balance, intense aromatics, and elegance. This equilibrium is achieved through strict vineyard management (all work is carried out manually), careful selection, organic farming practices and meticulous vinification techniques that favor a gentle touch, allowing the grapes to express their true character. She is a farmer first. Chiara then unites the best of traditional and modern winemaking techniques in a continuous endeavor to consistently produce high quality wines representative of their heritage.

Chiara has a very limited production of about 1,200 cases of Barolo each year. Her wines are made exclusively from the 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of proprietary vineyards in Barolo (Cannubi, Liste and Terlo), Monforte d’Alba (Mosconi, Ravera and Le Coste) and Serralunga d’Alba (Gabutti). Currently two single-vineyard Barolo wines are produced, Cannubi and Via Nuova, though a third (Mosconi) will be added to the line up in 2013. Chiara also produces three traditional Piedmont reds: Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo d’Alba.

“As one of the few women winemakers in the area, I wanted to produce a Barolo, a very strong and powerful wine, that showed a bit of its elegant side as well.” – Chiara Boschis

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
