Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 55 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Topper on 8/27/2022 & rated 89 points: Didn’t love this. Found it solid but overly ripe, tannic and alcoholic. Wouldn’t buy this again. (1001 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 3/2/2022 & rated 94 points: This ripe and fulsome Cabernet blend has lasted longer than I expected when I tasted it five years ago (4/17 - 94 points), though it still needs at least two hours to open up. I tasted this next to a 2007 Futo tonight, with the more recent vintage having far more life. In contrast, the 2006 seemed more bass than treble (read: more ripe, less fresh).

Dark purple in color and full in body, the wine offers aromas of blackberry, leather, and anise. Flavors of boysenberry, mocha, and mulberry, with a round and layered finish. Blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 5% Cab Franc. 15.6% alcohol. It's cliche to say that a producer recently shows more "restraint," but it's true here - Futo's 2010, 2012, and later vintages are more dialed in and fresh (though they just might be younger). 93-94 at the moment. Drink now. (2348 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 11/23/2019 & rated 94 points: Pop and pour. Relaxed and full palate of soft Oakville fruit. Everything is integrated and delicious and I don't see any reason to wait on this vintage much longer. Drink over the next few years. (2277 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 6/2/2019 & rated 92 points: 2+ hour decant. Blackberries, almost jammy, mocha, some heat, black currant, sweet Oak. A high quality wine, but the alcohol took it down a point for me. (2058 views)
Tasted by For the Love of Wine on 11/22/2018 & rated 90 points: Mini vertical of Futo wines (06, 07 and 09). All wines were slow oxidized (cork removed for 2-3 hours) and the 07 and 09 received an additional couple hours in a decanter, with the 06 receiving around 30 minutes prior to the initial pour. Some in the group thought this wine was corked. My palate is not as sensitive to slight cork as others, and I would have said this wine was not corked at all. I did not get anything indicating cork on the nose, nor on the palate. Having said that though, this was my least favorite of the three. The fruit seemed faded and continued to fade throughout the night. While the wine showed integration and arguably secondary or tertiary notes, I need a healthy dose of primary notes and flavors to truly enjoy a wine. This wine was perhaps the most complex, in terms of bouquet and flavor, but for me, the lack of fruit or primary flavor takes this wine down a notch. With more fruit, this wine would have shown much better (maybe the lack of fruit was due to slight corking, or due to the age-ability of the wine. Whatever the reason, I found this enjoyable, but a distant third in the flight. Like the other wines, it lacked QPR (even more so than the other vintages). A good, solid wine, but my least favorite of the three. (2431 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 11/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Guys night - Futo (My house): Decanted 2 hours. I'm scoring this wine even though it was mildly corked, because despite it being corked, I enjoyed it more than the 2007 and 2009 that were not corked. This wine was savory, with black olive and green pepper. It did kind of fall apart after a couple hours, but it was corked. (1862 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 11/15/2018 flawed bottle: Guys Night Featuring a Futo Trio (Joe & Khem's Place, Mpls, Mn): Very dark red/purple color. Tasted a glass over 90+ minutes. This was the one bottle that didn't get decanted. It was open for about 3 hours. I thought this was lightly corked from the start. I didn't notice much on the nose, but it was definitely in and out on the palate. It was one of those that it seems you can briefly swirl it away. You could see the essence of this wine and I think it would be my clear favorite of the trio of '06, '07, and '09 under different circumstances. Spice graphite, dark fruit. The palate has blackberry, huckleberry, tart, woodsy, graphite. This would merit at least 92+ without the taint. (1928 views)
Tasted by redknife on 3/11/2018 & rated 93 points: took to Fontana with Bellas parents
Needs time, at least 3 more years (1074 views)
Tasted by Bobbusch on 10/15/2017 & rated 92 points: I liked the wine. It definitely needed to breathe. Perhaps a little too hot for my liking as the alcohol was 15.6%. (1564 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 4/29/2017 & rated 94 points: A ripe and round Cabernet that should be drunk now - after a decent decant. Dark purple in color, full in body, nose of plum and vanilla, with a hint of thyme. Tastes of black cherry, raspberry, cedar, and prunes, with a lingering finish. 15.6% alcohol. I first thought this was no good, then let it breathe for a few hours. Blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Although lacked the complexity of a 2006 Larkmead Solari tasted at the same time, it blew away a 2006 Insignia. It has a bit too much plum and cedar, at least for me, at this point, but it is still quite good. I would have loved to try this a few years ago. (2235 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 1/9/2017 & rated 95 points: Similar note to previous. (1884 views)
Tasted by patwjr on 7/8/2016 & rated 95 points: Decanted 30 min, rebottled & opened 2 hours later. Beautiful nose and delicious blueberries dominate the taste, though tannins are still strong on finish, so I'd hold off drinking for 4-5 years. (2163 views)
Tasted by MattLA on 10/22/2015 & rated 94 points: I would not attempt to drink this wine without at least a three hour decant. It is very complex, revealing hints of plum, black licorice and black fruits. An enjoyable wine, but for the money I would rather drink a 2007 Backus or 2007 Paul Hobbs Dr. Crane. (2708 views)
Tasted by sandwich on 6/6/2015 & rated 95 points: This is a hedonistic and unctuous wine. Fat, lush and chewy with a round savory mouthfeel. Strong raisin and fig with a little blackberry and a juicy braised beef finish. (2472 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 4/16/2015 & rated 95 points: Cab & Cow Dinner (Vidalia - Washington DC): Dark red with smooth heavy body. Tannins were rich at 7.5/10. Light cassis nose but dark fruit body (2705 views)
Tasted by rwstorer on 2/22/2015 & rated 95 points: Popped and aired for 2 hours. Soft nose of casis, cedar and fruits. Balanced flavors of fresh cherry, clove, tobacco, and a hint of sweet vanilla. Full bodied, harmonious and nice to drink now. (2144 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 7/20/2014 & rated 94 points: Screagle, Kapcsandy, SHS, Abreu, Maybach, Donnhoff, etc., etc. (Downtown Cleveland): Dark purple in color. The nose is nice with cassis and some oak. On the palate it is delicious. But, when you are drinking side by side with other great wines, this lacked comparatively. Very drying tannins. Heat on the finish. Again, on its own, and I would have been quite content. Its just one of those oddities of wine that with multiple bottles its often the flaws that stand out. There is great fruit here. (3576 views)
Tasted by Alfaro on 2/22/2014 & rated 93 points: Should have waited, needs a few more years in my opinion, HUGE wine, needs at least four hours in a decanter before drinking so that it may have a remote chance of opening up and showing you some of it's true beauty, this could be 95+in a few years. (2402 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 12/31/2013 & rated 94 points: Great dark fruit, not as oaky as what it was like in the first few years upon release, great balance with medium structure and complexity. This is quite enjoyable and should be drunk over the next 5 years for it to be at its best IMO. (2348 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 10/13/2013 & rated 91 points: huge wine. seemed a bit disjointed. i think its too young. had it against a 97 hillside select shafer and a 07 villa del lago del dotto. thought it was the weakest. but also thought it was far from a write-off - seemed to be just too young and needs more bottle time to come together. its super dark and inky - but the tannins and oak and fruit werent in harmony IMHO. (2512 views)
Tasted by sandwich on 4/28/2013 & rated 94 points: This is a big boy wine. Massive chewy tannins and a well structured backbone makes this wine really enjoyable at this stage. Perhaps it's a bit young, but nonetheless it is drinking well at this stage. Nice toasted oak, gravel and some roasted game on the nose. Blackberry, vanilla, and fig on the palate and a nice long finish. Kudos to the Futos! (2835 views)
Tasted by jwolniak on 4/3/2013 & rated 93 points: Blind tasting. This needed food (pizza crust) to bring out the beauty. Improved in the glass during the tasting. (2628 views)
Tasted by A&C on 10/6/2012 & rated 93 points: A young, selective, and sneaky friend. This is well made with great fruit, and years to go before we sleep. Nice. Like a Ryan Adams song. (3001 views)
Tasted by bruinboozer on 8/17/2012 & rated 91 points: Serious tannins. Cedar notes. Oak. (2833 views)
Tasted by amgryger on 5/14/2012: NY/NJ Offline at Tribeca Grill (Tribeca Grill NYC): Big wine. Rich and ripe black cherry and cassis on the nose. Full bodied with significant oak, medium tannin and acid. (3683 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
