Tasted by Collector1855 on 4/19/2024 flawed bottle: 30 years of wine collecting and tasting, but this was a novelty. Believe it or not, there was a wasp in this bottle. Here is the story: This is one of my favorite Bordeaux and I have plenty of 2000 Pape-Clement in my cellar, so I know exactly how it tastes. I opened this bottle and it as strangely tannic, earthy with compressed aromas. Hmm, I thought, but since there are bottle variations with older wines, I decided to decant it. Once I finished decanting I saw a big piece of "cork" swimming on top of the decanter. After I poured that piece of "cork" into a glass to remove it, I noticed that it was a wasp, not cork. Wow, what a freak accident. I will keep the wasp to tell the story and next time I visit the Chateau. :-) (304 views)

Tasted by paulst on 3/9/2024 & rated 94 points: Bright sweet blackberry; terroir expressive; long and elegant. (662 views)
Tasted by grandvin100 on 2/17/2024 & rated 96 points: Lovely wine! Typical Pessac, smoky, strong, lots of fruit... has 10-15 years to come. (272 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/5/2024 & rated 94 points: Youthful and greenish; gravel; tannins mostly resolved; light berry and lean balanced finish. (1266 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 12/25/2023: Brick on the rim but shading to plum at the core. The color, as all aspects of this wine, continued to evolve throughout the dinner. Bright cranberry, plum, and cassis on the attack followed by tobo, saddle leather and abundant graphite; a deliciously crunchy wine. This is completely seamless from bouquet to finish. Everything in its place and everything in harmony. Rich, complex, ever evolving. This is why we buy Bordeaux. Surprisingly little sediment, but gently decanted nonetheless. 13.5% alc. With beef tenderloin in rosemary butter. 12.25.23. Highly Recommended. (1020 views)
Tasted by wineguru57@yahoo.com.au on 12/2/2023 & rated 95 points: Tried the 2000 Pape Clement , in a masked tasting of classed wines from Pauillac and Graves. Bouquet , nearly explosive , so much happening. Was superb. Layers of complexity. Very intense long palate. Clearly the Merlot and Cabernet franc played a big part. Still in its drinking window, and will definitely stay here for some time. (1310 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/17/2023 & rated 95 points: Still young, deep and dark in color. The nose, with its black cherries, cigar box, licorice, smoke, camphor and plums is attention grabbing. Full-bodied, lush, polished and rich, the wine finished with dark chocolate, peppery spice, ripe and almost over ripe black cherries with a touch of espresso on the backend that lingers. Drink from 2023-2045, (2691 views)
Tasted by winelover1808 on 11/11/2023 & rated 93 points: elegant claret. in a good window to be consume but far from being over the hill. raspberry, cherry some green bell pepper. medium bodied; nice tannic finish (1274 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Left bank bordeaux 2008 and older (BLVD): There was a distinct mint and/or vegetal quality to this wine that played well with the fruit, earth and tobacco. (1404 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Bordeaux 2008 and Older (BLVD Kitchen & Bar, Wayzata, MN): Very dark red color. 90 minute double decant. Drank a glass over 90 minutes. Funk, leather, dense, ripe blackberry, massive pencil, really plush mouthfeel, tannins have got some hold yet. Really nice. (1299 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 10/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Smooth and luxurious (1033 views)
Tasted by PITT Wine Guy on 9/6/2023 & rated 95 points: 2000 Pape Clement

Coravined 8/6/2023, 8/16/2023
Opened and Drank over 3 nights 9/3, 9/4,and 9/5/2023 with increasing pleasure delivery.
Deep purple color with slight lightning at the rim. The nose featured, black currant, tobacco, coffee. The wine was full-bodied and rich, with black fruit, great balance, freshness, and a beautiful mouthfeel. There was tremendous complexity to go with a long finish.
This is another 2000 Bordeaux drinking at its peak. Just lovely.
I would predict 5 to 10 years of additional enjoyment in its future.

Tasted by Hanover on 7/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Good cork; decanted 3 hours; some sediment; big start to finish; nice overall, but I scored it lower than others at a 2000 Bordeaux tasting. (1467 views)
Tasted by Fuel55 on 3/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Really solid bottle - truthfully could have used more time in the cellar - more old school than their '09 (which is my only other point of reference). Lovely dried red fruits with tobacco and a touch of ash on the finish which held it back just a touch. 30 minute decant and enjoyed over two hours - remained consistent over this time frame.  Tasted by Collector1855 on 2/18/2023 & rated 98 points: The Pape Clement 2000 continues to be one of my favorite Bordeaux bottle. It was the last big vintage before the current owner Bernard Magrez went completely overboard chasing and over-extracted Parker style. It took one and a half decade, to 2015, until the wine was "back to normal". The 05,09,10 are all wines to be avoided. Not the 2000. This wine was made in the classic style and benefited from the top vintage. In its youth the impressive 2001 had the edge over it, but not with the tannins dissolved the 2000 shows its mettle. Right off the bat, beautiful, complex nose with forest floor, leather, touch of farmyard, intense blue fruit. Well structured palate, not heavy, long finish. Top Bordeaux as it should be. Drink now - 2035 (2818 views)
Tasted by vvWine.ch on 1/9/2023 & rated 93 points: Noch jugendliches Rubinrot.
Tasted by johnh1001 on 12/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark fruit, asphalt, smoke. Great balance and creamy texture. (2413 views)
Tasted by J_H on 12/28/2022 & rated 95 points: - Without decanting, parallel to Brane Cantenac 1996.
- Nose: Vibrant nose with fresh fruit, combined of red and dark aromatics, extremely good and little wood detectable. One definitely wants to start drinking! First signs of underbrush and some tobacco discernible, but quite fine. With time also more fruit compote and ripe fruit recognizable.
- Palate: At the beginning very strongly marked by the acidity, which then integrates well and with the still present but polished tannins very much fun. Compared to the Brance Cantenac 1996 more tension and freshness present. All structured and little wood recognizable. What I like is when the fruit is picked to the point and you can detect it differentiated and without over ripeness and enough freshness and acidity is present. This is exactly the case here. This Pape Clement 2000 still has potential to develop more tertiary aromatics and complexity. In particular, the acidity may still integrate a little more.
- Still has a good 10 to 15 years of aging potential.

Tasted by La Sprezzatura on 12/28/2022 & rated 95 points: drunk side by side with brane cantenac 1996, had this wine the second time and never got disappointed. compared to the brane this had more power, more pressure and more dark fruit. more cassis, blueberry, pepper and tobacco. classic bordeaux in a very good vintage. it delivers what it promises.

on the palate powerful, yet silky. but less elegant and way less mature aromas than the brane cantenac 1996, even though there are only 4 years difference. this has so much to offer in future, the tannins are fully present and give the wine the backbone for further bottle aging. the fruit also remained almost primary and gives me the impressions that this wine is still youthful. very ripe cassis, black berries, licorice, almost compote-like. high acidity. nice drinkflow and high tension throughout the palate.

all in all a great bordeaux with a great future. but already now this is fun to drink. drink now with a 2 hour decant or wait for another 5 years at least to let this beauty peak. (1610 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 11/28/2022 & rated 95 points: Youthful, but continuing to develop well, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and lush, with layers of dark black and deep red fruits, smoke, wet earth, mocha, and tobacco. There is length, and depth, with a long, lushly-textured finish. Drink from 2022-2040. (3262 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 11/19/2022: Complex dark fruit with some soil overtones on the nose. Really lovely showing on the palate with loads of pencil lead. Maybe needs more time. (1574 views)
Tasted by todd siwak on 10/14/2022: Drank on 10/13/22 with Carly Lyss. Great bottle of wine, but still young! Will likely last 10 more years easily. Would benefit from decanting 60 - 90 minutes. (1677 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 8/28/2022 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet. Not quite tertiary nose. Tobacco, plum, blackberry. Taste of seasoned salt, tobacco, medium length. Very good now, can age some more. (2111 views)
 Tasted by k H i L o on 8/28/2022 & rated 93 points: P*tain que c'est bon !

Rockss and Fruit (10/4/2004)
(Pape Clement) Awesome nose. Oaky buy has enough fruit and nuance to counteract the oak. Exotic mushrooms, mint, smoke, black fruits, wet earth, green peppercorn. Really multidimensional. Flavors of red fruits & cocoa on the palate. Ripe and juicy with a stony finish. Gobs and gobs of fruit with no shortage of tannin.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
