Community Tasting Notes (average 93.5 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 914 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Vini Ciclismo on 4/19/2024 & rated 94 points: Deeply coloured, red rim.
Beautifully fragrant, cassis graphite and a hint of forest.
Silky smooth, weightless, glides across then bites with well balanced acid and super fine tannins. Flavours are classic Bordeaux, cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf complexity, a hint of mocha and leather. Delicious drinking but will hold for decades. (1200 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 4/10/2024 & rated 92 points: Bottle in perfect condition, cork pristine. Decanted for three hours. Medium garnet colour, very little sediment. Cherry, black currant, plum, cedar, tobacco, light coffee, light chocolate, spices, graphite, gravelly minerality, and a high-end balsamic vinegar note after further breathing, with fresh acidity, well-integrated tannin, and great persistence. Medium-bodied, balanced, and fresh, with impressive structure. Still firm and restrained, reminding me of many Bordeaux of the 1995 vintage. Holds a lot of promise, but for now the value for money is off. I would love to try this again in ten years! 92(++) (1785 views)
Tasted by Cremuel on 3/23/2024 & rated 92 points: Bob’s cellar. Deep ruby red. Nose of organic funk, deep black fruit, dark zest of menthol and black cherry - feels very young and to a degree unformed. Has a very distinct redcurrant acidity on first tasting, some funkiness in the background, again seems very young and expected it to be more mature for its age. Having said that it be is a very good wine. Could easily take a few more years to mature. (2605 views)
Tasted by d.f.c on 3/19/2024 & rated 94 points: Very enjoyable wine, especially with red meat dishes. We had this for lunch over Korean BBQ. Great pairing! Medium bodied wine with ample tannins. Oaky nose with berry jam flavor and good finish. I think this wine can hold strong even longer. (3155 views)
Tasted by mendezcellars on 3/17/2024 & rated 90 points: Very nice medium bodied, fruit flavors. (2789 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/8/2024 & rated 94 points: A beautiful, full-bodied Lynch Bages that is perfectly balanced with classic flavors just emerging of tobacco-tinged black fruits and graphite minerals. Just a baby though and needs more time to reach peak. 94+ (3295 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 2/11/2024: Super Bowl LVIII 2024 (Alpharetta, GA): Tasted double blind: Youthful color, deep ruby, polished wine, touch of sweetness on the finish with firm tannin. Still very primary, which made it tough to identify where it is from. Bordeaux nose, but Super Tuscan finish. I called it 2004 Sassicaia. (4816 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 1/26/2024 & rated 95 points: The wine was decanted for two hours prior to tasting.
Deep ruby/garnet color with no signs of bricking at the edges; blackberry, cedar pencil, mocha and a touch of green vegetable and eucalyptus on the nose.
Deeply integrated silky black fruit; with nice melding of primary and secondary notes. Plenty of firm tannic structure and a long, long finish. This wine has at least a couple of decades of life left in it, but it is drinking beautifully right now. (4658 views)
Tasted by D_RICH on 1/17/2024: Black/purple. Nose similar to the 1989 Lynch Bages, but much less developed, less intense. Similar on the palate but a little hotter, displaying plums, cedar and complexity. Tasted in a flight which included the 1989 Lynch Bages, the 2000 Figeac and the 2000 La Conseillante. The 1989 Lynch was the consensus favorite of the flight. This was my favorite of the three 2000's, although many in the group favored the Figeac. Didn't score it, but it would have been between 92-95. An excellent wine, and at age 24 it still seems young, with possible future development - but only one bottle left in my cellar. (5345 views)
Tasted by JB12 on 1/1/2024 & rated 87 points: The bottle i had was odd. The cork had 2020 on top and 2000 on the side. Anybody know about this?.. PM me please.

Decanted for an hour. Clearly not long enough as it was still not smooth. Taste was a muddy coffee with some fruit. Evened out a bit over the next 3 hours with fruit flavors appearing. Anyway, still not impressed. But i cant imagine how this could get better.... (5276 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 12/30/2023 & rated 95 points: Still showing very young with opaque purple colour and rich, full voluptuous dark berry fruit. Sweet cassis, pencil lead, sous bois and a hint of mint becoming more pronounced with air but still holding something in reserve which further cellaring will no doubt bring to the fore. Full-bodied and plush on the mid-palate leading to a long, cedary finish with some fine tannic grip. This is an excellent wine that will no doubt be a long distance runner and merit a higher score in another 5+ years. So good already for those who prefer more primary fruit. (4899 views)
Tasted by Ibetian on 12/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Decanted 3+ hours before dinner, and it worked. Still showing some 2000 reluctance, but after decant showed nice complexity without the bite an hour in decanter. A muscular wine, good pairing with beef.

Drinking pretty well now with long decant, but better in 3+ years. (4645 views)
Tasted by Apeek19 on 12/15/2023 & rated 90 points: Didn’t decant (coravin from cellar); tannic and acidic still feels like it should age more or be decanted to be maximized. Will revisit in a few years. (4575 views)
Tasted by mayfield on 12/7/2023 & rated 94 points: So beautiful. I remember tasting this at the Chateau in 2002 like it was yesterday. They were pawning off the 2001 on the foreign tourists and I asked in French if I could try “Les deux mille” and the tour guide said “vous savez!” and took me in the back to let me try it. Its pedigree was apparent even then but it has evolved slowly. Even now it is a baby. It has less Pauillac typicity than a lot of the other LB’s of this era even the others from warm vintages, you more taste the sunshine here. It also has an ethereal quality and one has to beli ve that it will lengthen and gain more complexity in the coming years. No regrets—this is a great wine. (4590 views)
Tasted by Verb on 12/2/2023 & rated 95 points: dark red, brick rim - classic Pauillac nose of dark red fruit, chocolate, and graphite - mouth is still not as impressive as the nose - smooth mouth feel, but acidity and tannins still predominate over the dark red fruit flavors - medium 15-20 sec finish - this 2000 has finally come around to drinking as an excellent mature Bordeaux - will last for another decade or more, but will never have the rich full mouth of right bank wines such as the 2000 Vieux Chateau Certan tasted alongside (4485 views)
Tasted by drmarc61 on 11/23/2023 & rated 96 points: This wine is at the end of its teen stage. Primary, secondary and tertiary notes began to meld together. Wine felt light on the pnp and quickly gained weight and the taste profile lasted beyond 30 seconds.
Glad I bought a case upon its release and cellared it properly. This wine should continue to improve with age. (4635 views)
Tasted by Tao on 11/22/2023 & rated 99 points: The best, the most delicious Lynch Bages I have ever tasted in my lifetime! Great structure, fabulous aroma, layers and layers of ripe, beautiful spicy dark fruits striking the palate, very refined in texture, amazingly young, hopefully, I'm able to try this again!! (4679 views)
Tasted by mcj2001 on 11/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Complex with refined tannins. Still lots of black fruit flavors with some leather notes. Had after a 30-minute decant. Pair with grilled lamb chops. (4591 views)
Tasted by vinolovers on 11/3/2023 & rated 96 points: Did not decant; Poured to a medium garnet color with a hint of purple on the rim. Incredible nose of black fruit and honey. After about 30 minutes, plum, cassis, black currants and graphite. Tannins completely subsided but the wine remained incredibly knit together. Smooth, so smooth. Terrific steak and potato wine. (4704 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 10/22/2023 & rated 97 points: Opened at dinner with Jim Lester and his wife and paired with a homemade pepper steak. only the 3rd time I have had this wine and it is showing what it can be at it's peak. The last time I had this was in 2015. Solid cork and decanted for one hour. Very lightly sedimented. Crimson color with very little bricking. Notes of leather, black currants, and oak. Firm tannins. Starting to really show some depth. Beautiful. Drink or hold. Glad I have a magnum of this which I will hold. 97 points. (5167 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 10/19/2023 & rated 96 points: Domaine visit. From MAG, decanted. Lots of cassis, mint, some earthy elements. Deep and complex. Young still, this may end up as good as the 1989. Best to wait another few years. 96-97 (5421 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 10/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent ullage in this bottle purchased on premiere tranche in 2002 or thereabouts. The cork had barely any red stain in it other than the first 5 mm. Tasted soon after opening without decanting, this immediately had lovely aromas of cassis, blackberries, and faint cedar. It was harmonious with some residual soft tannins and a medium length finish. With more aeration, it became even more complex and refined. Lovely wine which is drinking very well now. (5250 views)
(5444 views)
Tasted by BernieMSY on 9/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Brick red. Lots of leather saddle savory notes. (4762 views)
Tasted by NickA on 9/15/2023 & rated 95 points: Bordeaux blends Paulée with Lay & Wheeler (The George): Magnum. Surprisingly developed given the format, with a soft, truffley, gamey nose. Drinking beautifully though: excellent balance, ever-changing flavours, refreshing acidity, powdery tannins with just the right amount of grip, and a long finish. This is now an expensive wine, but deservedly so. (4428 views)

(Lynch Bages) This was very very closed on the nose. I actually didn't smell anything. I swirled and swirled but could not really coax anything. It was the end of the bottle too. The palate was tight but I got more out of that than the nose. Somewhat fleshy with dark concentrated fruit, nice acids and some pretty clamby tannins. The fruit though extended on the finish. It was sweet, classy and very nice. Do not open for at least five years.

(Lynch Bages) This was completely closed down. Hint of earth and mineral on the pretty ungiving nose. Dense and ripe with great fruit. Long, long, long but also tannic, tannic, tannic. Incredible underlying material but very tough to taste today.

Château Lynch-Bages

Vineyard map

BACKGROUND: The wine of Château Lynch-Bages is part of the lineage of the great Pauillac wines. Blended mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. It is further distinguished by its opulence. Generous right from its youth, it develops more flavours and greater complexity as it matures.

The affirmation of the Lynch-Bages style came with the arrival of Jean-Charles Cazes to head the estate in 1934. An innovative winemaker, emblematic of a new generation of owners willing to break with tradition and taking risks to ensure truly ripe harvests, he was known for often being the last to harvest in Pauillac. From 1945 onwards, the fame of the château emerged thanks to a series of great vintages. Some, despite being considered difficult to grow in Bordeaux, are particularly successful at Lynch-Bages. His wines are characterized by their deep colour, their tannic structure, their controlled concentration and elegant sensuality. The vintages vinified by André Cazes, and after him Jean-Michel Cazes, confirm this trend.

The style of the wines has refined over the years, gaining suppleness and softness, whilst their consistency has been established over time. Then as now, Château Lynch-Bages has been characterised by its extraordinary qualitative homogeneity. Powerful, elegant and open, vintage after vintage, the wine has acquired greater accuracy, adding distinction to the hedonistic character that made its reputation.

2000 Château Lynch-Bages

The estate vineyard composition is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
