Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 201 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Halfeel on 4/5/2023 & rated 89 points: Not a lot of fruit, bu still decent after a good decant and aeration. Only a bit of sediment at 17 years of age. (472 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 7/19/2021 & rated 88 points: Classic CdP profile (earth red and purple fruit, leather) but not particularly complex. Good value for a CdP. Drink now. (1461 views)
Tasted by LotionInTheBasket on 5/9/2021: Wanted something more mature and got it. This drinks well. 3 hour decant. Garnet you can't see through and it somehow looks and swirls lighter. Nose is stewed red fruits, rhubarb on a tart note, anise, licorice, vanilla, some all spice. Front hits with a blend of red fruits, Raspberry being what I get most, slight cherry. Mature fruit, pie material, well integrated. Acidity {medium+} kicks in headed towards mid and potent, nice woody funk, griippy tannins underlying dried red florals coming to the table. Great textural transitions and nuances. You can pull on a lot of fun threads with this wine. Finish lingers nicely and I find it super satisfying, I can take a nice breather between sips; think on it. May not be firing on all its younger cylinders, its all OK, it has a whole bunch of fun things to enjoy and dissect. Can't lose for the money. Time, will also not let this become a long term science project. Enjoy in the best term and should not disappoint. (1508 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 8/19/2020 & rated 87 points: Decanted for sediment. Light garnet color. Nose of cherry cough drop, licorice, slightly stewed/baked red fruits. Similar flavors on the palate with a definite cough drop and licorice note on the back end. Medium- acid, medium+ tannin with a bit of heat on the finish. Probably would have been better a few years ago so I would drink up if holding any. (1692 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 5/13/2020 & rated 89 points: The flavors lack focus but the wine is well structured, and aged well. (1714 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 5/12/2020 & rated 90 points: For some odd reason, it felt a bit more tannic than two years ago. Fruit is still intact. Very fresh. Alcohol in check. If you have any left, decant or lie down for a couple of years. Good bottle, just needs some air. (1488 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 3/14/2020 & rated 89 points: Earth and anise on the nose. Raspberry, savory, soft tannins and a long finish (1035 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 3/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Still in a nice drinking window at 14 years....spice, currants, leather, prunes...a big fan of Patrick Lesec's CDP's! (1141 views)
Tasted by winepog on 1/22/2020 & rated 91 points: A little tight on opening, but came around after a the bottle got a little air. Worth the wait and drinking well. (1053 views)
Tasted by ecola on 10/14/2019 & rated 91 points: Soft and smooth with dried red fruit, subtle herb and toast. Might be on the downside but still drinking well. Very nice pairing with a pork loin, butternut squash, and strawberry applesauce. (1212 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 8/26/2019 & rated 88 points: Opened but not decanted at home, alongside a 1999 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir. The Lesec was disappointing. Seemed to be a clunky one note CdP. It was a lost bottle in my cellar. Not even on my Cellartracker inventory. (1235 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 6/29/2019 & rated 90 points: PnP. Nicely blended nose and palate of cherry, red raspberry, vanilla, savory spice and a hint of white pepper. Soft tannins and silky finish. (1258 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 3/24/2019 & rated 88 points: Certainly in the "drinkable" category, well structured but marred by a slightly bitter stemmy note in the midpalate. I was expecting a better showing from this Lesec bottling. (1438 views)
Tasted by mwneil on 11/3/2018 & rated 88 points: Not much bouquet, dark color, good fruit and balance as wine has mellowed with aging, however, alcohol burns on the finish and basically lowers your overall impression of the wine, did not find much complexity , enjoyed wine but nothing special, drank with magret of duck. (1656 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 10/28/2018 & rated 92 points: Very restrained for CdP. It feels like ripe Burgundy but with more licorice, herbal notes. It is a powerful wine but not overstated. We drank it out of the cellar, so it was a bit cold. That may have helped too. Love CdP with this level of elegance and finesse. (1518 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 10/5/2018 & rated 91 points: Brick red. Initially the nose had some funk, but it opened into red fruit. Tasting, red fruit, cherry and raspberry. Some grip from the tannins, nice acidity. Delicious. (1412 views)
Tasted by studleytrey on 3/21/2018 & rated 89 points: Deep garnet color. Aromas of dark and dark red fruits, Kirsch, garrigue, wet slate, earth, dry leaves, cinnamon, and mineral. Medium body, medium (+) acid and finish, a bit of alcohol burn from the 15% here, and flavors of Kirsch and cherry, plum, black currant, and a strong mineral core. Tannins a little grippy, but I'm not sure I'd hold this one a whole lot longer. The alcohol is a little detracting, but otherwise a perfect snow day sipper and pairing for our leftover Persian lamb meatballs in tomato turmeric rice today. (2213 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 1/31/2018 & rated 90 points: Nicely balanced. Peaking at this time. Medium body with red and dark fruits mix. Friends enjoyed it. (1905 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 1/6/2018 & rated 94 points: PnD let air for 1hr. Deep clear garnet with clear rim. Local cherry plums garrigue. Medium weight with silky tannins. Big complex elegant fresh with flavours. Lingering herbal finish. Lots of life ahead but hard to resist right now. (1758 views)
Tasted by winepog on 6/10/2017 & rated 90 points: Well made with a strong spine surrounded with light tanins, juicy acidity and restrained fruit. (3054 views)
Tasted by costacasa on 4/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Amazing 11 year old wine. It needed almost a day to fully open up, but it is well worth the wait. Any heat this may have had, has disappeared. The tannins have softened considerably. So many subtle flavors. I like this so much better than 3 years ago. (3573 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 3/19/2017 & rated 92 points: Great! Perfect window to drink (3196 views)
Tasted by NoWineWiz on 1/13/2017 & rated 91 points: PnP Well balanced and enjoyable with a long finish. Improved over the next hour and the following night (poured 1/2 into a 375 ml. for next night) (3256 views)
Tasted by John O' on 10/23/2016 & rated 94 points: Don't drink much CdP. This was wonderful. Big, no evidence of any fading. (4084 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 2/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Garrigue, kirsch and cassis scent. Rich, mouth-filling, coffee, tart cherry, cranberry, fig and anise flavor with plentiful grippy tannins and a long finish. Big, exuberant, hot. (3943 views)

(Patrickl Lesec Les Galets Blonds Chateauneuf du Pape) #2; COLOR-dark; NOSE-some big chalkiness; cranberries; a little creaminess; and some sour cherry; very aggressive as "you can smell the tannins"; a little gaminess; beautiful sour cherries coming through; perfumed; very clean and very focused nose; PALATE-there's a big mouthfeel; very aggressive tannin on the back-end; this is a very big wine (should decant); the sour cherry and cranberry is dominating this wine; a little floral and gamey action as well; this is a very serious and complete wine; quite sensational and spectacular for $38 bones; JR-92/94; RP-93; GV-93  93 points

2006 Patrick Lesec Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Galets Blonds

WINERY:
composed of 85% Grenache, 12% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre

"Patrick Lesec established his negociant firm in 1993. Having found that customers in his restaurant in California were frequently disappointed with French wines, he began to seek out his own sources of supply, mostly from the Rhone Valley...Patrick Lesec Selections includes eight different estate-bottled red wines from Chateauneuf du Pape. Patrick works closely with 'non-interventionist' producers under contract to make top quality wines."

"Some of the vineyards are located in the lieux-dits La Crau, Valori, Le Cristia...and Palestor. All of these wines have a high content of old Grenache...and are treated with as little sulfur as possible. They are neither fined nor filtered." -Harry Karis, The Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Book

Patrick Lesec Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Galets Blonds

Patrick Lesec Les Galets Blonds is made using 93% old vine Grenache and 7% Syrah. The vines are old, averaging 75 years of age. The grapes are completely destemmed. The wine is aged in tanks and foudres for 12 to 14 months. About 550 cases are produced each vintage.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
