Tasted by DBdeParis on 4/11/2024: Decanted off a fair bit of sediment, then aerated back into bottle. Beautiful nose, classic mature CdP. Very soft on the palate with very faded tannins and acidity. The flavors - wow. Will be drinking the rest over the next couple of years. (376 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 3/28/2024 & rated 92 points: Domaine Pegau 1995-2008 Vertical: Nose: 92, Palate: 92
My #3, Group's #4. Tasted Blind. (548 views)
Tasted by Vascular46 on 2/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Medium to full bodied with dark fruit, meat and a hint of licorice on the nose and palate. Suspect it is at the end of it's prime drinking interval. (882 views)
Tasted by Drankard on 1/23/2024: Impressive! Very structured and should go on for many more years. (1281 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 12/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Robust structure of tannin and acidity still going, though softening now. The alcohol is prominent, this became more pronounced the longer it was open. The initial blast after pulling the cork was all mature blackberry fruits, with an undertow of farmyard and leather. Long and complex. I think drink now as this was nicer when first opened. (1228 views)
Tasted by alamoave on 12/25/2023 & rated 94 points: From magnum. Superb from start to finish. Opened 2 hours before Christmas dinner. Everyone loved it. Drink now. (1044 views)
Tasted by Eric on 12/24/2023 & rated 93 points: What a great wine. Still so much structure. Mega-spicy with intense Herbes de Provence and garrigue. Grilled plum, meaty, powerful, and dry. This is pretty savage in the best way. Rich and deep. This has loads of time ahead. (1370 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/22/2023 & rated 89 points: French but no Burgundy/Bordeaux theme: Brought for a friend. No brett, clean and lifted nose. Cloudy in appearance, resolved and tertiary on the palate with some remnants of sweet fruit. Not sure if this was advanced or just past peak. (1095 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 11/26/2023 & rated 95 points: Drinking this is very bittersweet. The last bottle of a case of one of my all time favorite CdP’s. Holding well - sweet fruit, spice and garrigue in spades. Black tea. Flavor depth is impressive with a mature finish. Could smell this all day long. I wouldn’t hold much longer. What a lovely book of memories this wine has provided. Bravo! (95) (1362 views)
Tasted by VinhoVerde on 11/11/2023 & rated 89 points: Ripe cherries and leather bouquet. Medium bodied, round, soft, mature wine. Delicious now.
Beginning to show its age, I’d drink it as soon as possible. Fruit is fading a bit. Still…elegant and sophisticated wine. (1140 views)
Tasted by sh6k on 11/10/2023 & rated 96 points: I liked this a whole lot -- showing great right now -- big and broad and open with a blanket of fine round tannins giving texture and a mouthfeel like it was a thick layer in the mouth -- not heavy, not even "rich", just broad and deep and comforting. Earth and fruit in perfect balance which that gave the impression of granola or un-spiced gingerbread or a berry cobbler. (1104 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 10/7/2023 & rated 93 points: This pours medium garnet in the glass with light bricking. The nose is restrained yet lovely showing cherry, herbs de provence, leather, plum, animal fur, hints of beef blood, and smoked meat. No discernible brett to speak of on this bottle. The palate enters on sweet red fruit, with medium minus acid and medium minus tannin. The finish is lovely showing dates, leather, and herbs de provence. Quite nice. (1645 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 8/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Super expressive strawberry, cedar and grilled meats on the nose and palate. Touch of metallic/ age on the finish. Drink now. (1621 views)
Tasted by ron m on 8/2/2023: Wonderful. Fully resolved, smooth as silk. The nose is a bit shy with meat and blood dominating, perhaps a little thyme. The palate is fabulous - smooth and harmonious. Fantastic finish. This is at peak form - will hold, but why wait. Alas, my last one. (1471 views)
Tasted by IAmVintage on 7/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Exceptional! CdP Filtered aerated decant. Sorry no better notes, but it was WOTN, wish we didn't have to share with so many others. LOL ha-ha (1538 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 7/8/2023: Drank at home, open and left to breathe for a couple of hours then drank leisurly over a couple of hours.

The wine shows a wonderful decadent old southern Rhone profile. Filled with dried red fruit, a fine thin oaky frame and layers upon layers of spices.
Elegant with silky texture and dissolved tannins, it is such a joy to drink now (1534 views)
Tasted by bon vivant on 4/15/2023 & rated 93 points: PNP at a wine party so fast note : clean bottle, no bret, nice dark fruit, good secondary flavors, garrigue. Smooth and broad finish. Well received disappeared fast. (1858 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 4/8/2023 & rated 93 points: It's a great time to taste the 2000 Pegau; the boisterousness of youth has settled, leaving an elegant, red cherry driven nose that has something of a Burgundian finesse to it, yet with the aromas of the Southern Rhone - warm earth, herbes de Provence, sun dried tomato. While there's a little bit of brett, the wine isn't dominated by it. Supple on the palate; the tannins are integrating nicely and there's some cracked black pepper as well. Drinking well without any decant, this held up nicely for a couple hours until we finished the bottle. No immediate rush on these, but they are in a terrific place now. (2571 views)
Tasted by lockestep on 3/31/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened and decanted for sediment then recorked and opened two hours later.
This was open for business on second pull, but it did continue to improve over the evening. Still plenty of secondary notes, typical of the house with the more rustic notes playing a supporting role instead of dominating.
Will continue to hold for some time. (1656 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 3/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Butcher & The Boar Reincarnate (Butcher and the Boar, Mpls): Dark red color. Double decanted with a good dose of slow O too. Drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Really classic old school Pegau and CdP, cherry and garrigue out front, hints of red currants and cranberry, with pepper and spice. The palate is medium bodied and more Burgundian, cherry, kirsch, cranberry, tons of spicy deep garrigue notes with even more earth and herbal tones, and saddle leather. Excellent. (2040 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 3/1/2023 & rated 92 points: My btl tonight at the new Butcher & Boar Warehouse District w/ KB, VB, DM, SS & JS. The cork crumbled forcing me to decant this which was fine but not necessary. Pretty much ready to go with 45 minutes of air. This very resolved with a nice range of tertiary notes. Might have wanted a little more zip. My one and only btl recently acquired from a retailer cellar purchase & resale. (1801 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/12/2023: ESTG does Southern Rhone and Provence (Seattle, WA, USA): Utter fireworks, white pepper and garrigue, explosive and vibrant, long, chewy. Like biting and electric cord. It is hard to describe the raw energy and vibrancy here. DEEEEEP structure, surprisingly tannic, really amazing showing. (2170 views)
Tasted by Gunakadeit on 11/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Eb1202’s note is spot on. (1824 views)
Tasted by Brain Capers on 11/12/2022: The 2019 was delivered today, so why not have a bottle of Pegau to celebrate. The cork upon removing, had completely crumbled, but the wine was just great! Wow, such a nice rich aged Grenache. Yum. Still have another 4 btls. A great purchase. (1967 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 10/24/2022 & rated 92 points: My last bottle and the 6th time I have had this wine. Purchased for $35 on release in 2002. Not decanted but it could have used it since there was a good bit of sediment. Burnt crimson color. Very rustic with plum, garrigue and gamey notes. 92 points. (2222 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
