Tasted by Ernestas on 1/26/2024 & rated 91 points: Perfumed Chasse Spleen with silky texture, structured body and grippy fine tannins. Made from a CS based blend with 20% Merlot and 7% PV, aged for 14 months in oak, 40% new. Intense aroma of earthy dusted cassis and dried cherries, plums, chocolate, earth, spices, cigar box, dried violet petals. Medium+ body, rustic, lively and pleasantly nervous structure, flavours are dusty and still fresh and fruity just not as pronounced as aroma. Concludes with vibrant medium+ acidity and high fine grippy tannins. (298 views)
Tasted by MarkLA on 10/10/2023 & rated 92 points: On opening, really classic on the nose. Plenty of cassis and currant. I wouldn't have guessed the vintage was 2003. Decanted and continued to open up over the next hour.

The nose begins to jump out of the glass. More exuberant red fruits along with clove, cinnamon, blood orange, sandalwood, smoke, and iodine. The palate has become more open-knit and juicy with a fair amount of tannin left to resolve but does not necessarily detract from the enjoyment of the wine. Quite lovely. Drink now and into the next decade. (732 views)
Tasted by Swintonblade on 2/13/2023 & rated 92 points: Wow, you would not think this wine is almost 20 years old. Such good levels of fruit still, tannins well balanced and a great length. Drink now or easily keep (1513 views)
Tasted by Steynor on 10/4/2022: Tanners: This is a big, robust wine that has plenty of round, supple fruit that is ripe with good tannins. (2177 views)
Tasted by TCT50 on 1/21/2022: Perfect for drinking now 20222 (2870 views)
Tasted by Smatk on 11/8/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted and followed for about three hours. Ripe cherry, creme de cassis, and cigarbox on the nose. Palate the same with a nice line of herbaceousness and menthe following on the finish. Tannins smooth and integrated. Really good bottle and exactly what I'm looking for from a well-aged medoc wine. Paired very nicely with pan roasted chicken and a simple jus... (2716 views)
Tasted by Genghis88 on 9/5/2021 & rated 89 points: Ruddy burgundy in color. Medium to full bodied
Iodine. Pencil shavings. Some red fruit
Unctuous. Well balanced. Medium finish. Cigar box. Tastes like the nose,
Solid typical Bordeaux but nothing special. Still good. Great price point. No complaints. Great as a casual wine. Not sure if it will get much better.

Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 8/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Fully developed. Charming, sweet aromas, leather, caramel, cigarbox, plum, chocolate, truffle. Medium bodied, very well structured and delicate blend. Drink now and over the coming 2 years. (2671 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 4/12/2020 & rated 91 points: Fully developed. Charming, sweet aromas, leather, caramel, cigarbox, plum, chocolate, truffle. Medium bodied, very well structured and delicate blend. Another demonstration of the good quality and maturing potential of this vintage (against all odds!). Drink now and over the coming 3 years. (2603 views)
Tasted by Jumbo-Jet on 3/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Fruit heavy nose with cassis, strawberries, licquorice and hints of firestones / dust.

On the palate nice, balanced development with an initial acidic bite, immediate dry tannic counterbalance and sweet dark cassis, toffee and roast aromas coming through towards the end.

Still feels very lively. Pleasure to drink and an excellent value. (2530 views)
Tasted by Bobc7had on 1/2/2020 & rated 89 points: Lovely Bordeaux. Still drinking well. Totally integrated tannins and fruit (2578 views)
Tasted by Lahache80 on 12/13/2019 & rated 92 points: Really good drinking slot for this wine right now. Still has a lot of dark fruit left and at the same time starting to show of some nice secondairy aromas. Overall a very expressive impression, i guess it also derives from the very warm vintage. Good length and very succulent. The second day it had faded rather significantly, quite surprising to be honest. I guess that is a sign that this wine will still hold on for appx another 5 years or so, but it is in a very good moment right now. Drink and don’t save for to long! (2027 views)
Tasted by khmark7 on 12/8/2019 & rated 88 points: Pop & pour this is very tannic out of the gate. As expected the fruit is subdued at this stage, and not getting a lot of savory character. Might be best with grilled beef. I feel like i waited too long to open this bottle. Hopefully this opens with some air time. (1952 views)
Tasted by ephorn on 10/7/2019 & rated 86 points: Solid but not remarkable. (1872 views)
Tasted by Lahache80 on 9/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Decanted for about one hour. Very enjoyable and accessable right now. Still much fruit left, cassis and liquorish primairely. Smooth tannins and well integrated oak. I would say it’s probably in a very good drinking window right now as I also prefere my Bordeauxs rather young. I don’t think it will improve much over time from this stage, rather change in character. Overall very enjoyable and nice! (1660 views)
Tasted by Bobc7had on 9/1/2019 & rated 89 points: needed about 90 minutes to open up (1574 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 4/22/2019 & rated 90 points: A sunny Day at the german Outback (South of Hamburg, outback, Lüneburg heath): Nearly the same showing of this MG as the day before, starting with some little grainy tannin, with some one hour aeration this bottles again turns out to a very fine mature Bordeaux, can be drunk now but no need to hurry, will keep this condition approximately 5++ years, ***(+) (2343 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 4/21/2019 & rated 90 points: From MG: fine fragrance of forest soil, blackberry and dark cassis, some little grainy tannin at the start, with some air turns out to a very harmonic Bordeaux with soft tannin, meaty though, entering its top drinking window now with very good persistence, very delicious and very good pairing with grilled lamb and iberico pork chops, but can easily be kept in your cellar for another 5(+) years, especially from a bigger bottle, ***(+?) (2050 views)
Tasted by Smatk on 11/27/2018 & rated 90 points: Restrained nose of dark cherry, creme de cassis, and cedar. Round and supple with sweet red and dark fruit followed by prominent, delicious French oak on the mid palate with a lingering menthe on the finish. The wine's delicate complexity was overwhelmed by a Salisbury steak over mashed potato pairing. I feel this rich vintage is better served as quaffer than food wine. (2209 views)
Tasted by CarpeDiem! on 5/21/2018 & rated 90 points: Positively surprised by my first CS since long. Silky nose, with lots of sweetness in the nose, subtle cask, vanilla, tobacco, cocoa notes. Fully developed in the mouth. Medium bodied, combining classical BDX notes of mature fruit, tobacco, caramel, chocolate, a hint of menthol in the finish. Perfect, most enjoyable match to our lamb shank. This is why I buy (and wait) for my Bordeauxs. (3268 views)
Tasted by danckie on 12/21/2017 & rated 92 points: Chasse Spleen Never fails. One of my favorite chateaux and reasonable prices to boot. This wine is in a very happy place right now. Cherry and red berry fruit. Fruit is still very much on the fore front. Some secondary notes coming trough. Great balance. Silky tannins. Very enjoyable. Will buy again if I get the chance. You should to ...! (3498 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 11/3/2017 & rated 91 points: Enjoyable, easy drinking. (3436 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 8/26/2017 & rated 89 points: Easy drinking charmer, without any of the excess you often find in this vintage. The wine is round, accessible and with a soft, red berry, earth and tobacco character. This is drinking at what is probably its peak today. (5294 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
