Tasted by speedywine on 12/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Fantastic wine despite it was a little bit too chilled. NB: I love Pessac-Leognan... (937 views)
Tasted by NBouras915 on 12/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Purchased recently as a one off. Very nice. Fully mature and ready to go after a one hour decant. (814 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 12/21/2023: 55F since acquiring on release - youthful red black - smoke and graphite and soy - savory AF - tannins both silky velvet and powdery fine - nice wine particularly for charred meats like this lamb (847 views)
Tasted by JulianSkeels on 11/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Lovely ash, tobacco, cedar and new leather nose. Bit light in the mouth but with lovely gravel and mineral finish. Come across that it’s a touch green but the oak has morphed into a lovely nose. A clear notch down from the 2000 rendition and couple of notches from the excellent 1998. Really enjoyable though. Drink now, it didn’t need air and there isn’t much depth of fruit. 93pts (1130 views)
Tasted by Invest on 11/20/2023 & rated 93 points: 13% Alc., natural cork, 5% soaked, still strong dark purpur red color with no ageing reflexes.

Nose: Smell of beautiful matured Bdx.

Palate: Very good freshness, good balance, ripe heart cherry to sour cherry, melty black chocolate, wine doesn't show tiredness, pleasant tones of ripeness and secondary aromas. Bottle was quite fast emptied.

Give it 1h in the decanter! That's what you desire when you drink well stored matured Bdx. Unfortunately my last bottle. (1078 views)
Tasted by Beachfan on 10/21/2023: Not my style (742 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 10/8/2023 & rated 93 points: From magnum. Showing some signs of age with lightening around the rim and some more tertiary notes appearing on the smoky, sous-bois and cedar-infused nose. Soft as velvet through the mid-palate with some fruit remaining. Just lacking a bit of structure and the length, breadth and depth on the finish to make this more interesting. An enjoyable bottle for sure, just not to the same level as one enjoyed a year ago. Drink 'em if you've got 'em as I can't see further upside from here, IMO. (705 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 9/24/2023: PnP
Nose of dark fruit, tobacco, wet soil, cedar, and spice.
Med body, med- acidity, med- tannin.
This is sugning now. All elements are in line.
I would enjoy this Joe and over the next 10 years. (887 views)
Tasted by Chrysostomus on 9/5/2023 & rated 93 points: „Very classical“, that was in my mind during the drinking experience over 2 days with this one. Typical aromas of tobacco, wet earth and leaves, pencil shavings. Good structure and fine tannins on the palate. Not the most powerful wine but refined and in a perfect window now! 92-93 (994 views)
Tasted by Pinot Peter on 7/14/2023: Nose of cassis/ dk berry. On my palate I first get a smokiness, then a sweetness that fills the palate and gives this wine good length. This is not a heavy wine but is packed with great flavours. Leather, tobacco, dk chocolate, dark berry to name a few. This softens and gains complexity as you finish the bottle. Excellent wine! A pleasure to drink. (1180 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 6/30/2023 & rated 95 points: it has been a long time since I had this. I remember it just like it was. A lighter, may be a touch diluted (like so often in 2001) version of the amazing 2000. Excellent aromas of farmyard funk, dark fruit, forest floor. Aroma 96+, palate 94, quite light and a touch too much acidity for the fruit. At peak now, drink up. (1726 views)
Tasted by nectar14 on 5/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Really beautiful bottle drinking very well, still with many years Still ahead of it. Solid acidity, lots of wonderful gravel scents. Drink or hold (1136 views)
Tasted by ayalao3 on 4/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Probably an off bottle. Past peak with a bit of VA (1315 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 4/14/2023: Fantastic. Great solid dark fruit. Good secondary herbal flavors. This is in a great place, hitting just perfectly. Drink or hod 10 years. (1182 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 11/13/2022 & rated 93 points: This is a terrific wine. Thank goodness after the past bottle which was all leather and no pleasure. Certainly a wine that is full of stewy, game and tobacco notes. Yet it’s mixed deliciously with black current and dark berry fruit. Masculine, stony finish. An old school claret that has nothing in common with recent vintages from this Chateau. Lots of tobacco on the finish. I like it. (93) (2144 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 11/12/2022 & rated 95 points: Explosive nose right out of the gate with lots of cedar, red currant, bacon fat, autumn leaves, fresh loam. Wonderful palate which mirrored the aromatics, well-rounded entry and lush on the mid-palate. This was drinking younger than other recent bottles with some tannins still to be resolved. Honestly, to my taste, the QPR on this wine is off-the-charts. Another "why I love Bordeaux" experience. (1793 views)
Tasted by Mbbarros on 10/11/2022 & rated 95 points: Four years latter, the same wine, at the same restaurant. The 2001 evolved well since 2018, and I believe It is at the peak of its evolution. If you have any bottles left of this beauty, you should open it now! (1952 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 9/5/2022: Clean on the nose. Dried dark red fruit, tobacco, new leather, cedar, and vanilla.
On the palate this is wonderful. Medium body, medium acid, and light tannin. This is very refined and just slightly tart on the finish. Olenty of time left but this is great now. Drink over the next 10 years. (1884 views)
Tasted by Dibbs on 8/9/2022 & rated 92 points: Needs a lot of air. 1.5hrs in the decanter but only after about an hour in the glass to fully reveal itself. The pedigree is there but this felt like a classic BDX; nothing to write home about or any flaw that I could pick out. Didn't really speak to me but solid wine nonetheless. (2328 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 6/19/2022: Wow, freaking awesome. Full, juicy, almost lush, but still muscular and firm. Fruit is very dark with lots of iron and minerals and earth. Menthol. Gret depth. Powerful but also pretty. But mostly powerful. This is fully mature with great structure and feel. Drink now and over the next 10-15 years. Excellent. (1590 views)
Tasted by acc_123 on 5/29/2022 & rated 95 points: This was singing - really beautiful wine. Deep and rich nose of dark fruit and tobacco. Round and balanced on the palate with a loooong finish (1614 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 5/22/2022 & rated 86 points: I want to love this wine. Past bottles have been glorious and I love Pessac’s made in this style. Full garnet color. The nose is wonderful and classic: tobacco leaf, leather, red fruit and cut weeds. A touch green. Medium weight. There is some nice initial fruit but the leather and green structure take over quickly. Unexpected. Hopefully just an off bottle. Ok only. (86) (1599 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 2/12/2022 & rated 92 points: Solid showing, classic old school style, fattened out with age, showing basement and leather, smothers the fruit a little, saline tang coming through which added some freshness, probably more leather and cedar than I’d prefer. First One or maybe two glasses are good, then a bit tiresome at the three hour mark. No Decant, peaked at 2 hrs. (2089 views)
Tasted by egoya on 2/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Last of 3 bottles. Quite nice, but nonetheless disappointing in view of the high ratings of all the professional experts. (1671 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 12/27/2021 & rated 91 points: A touch of bricking. Red fruits dominate the nose with hints of loam and mint. Palate is well rounded. Fine tannins which persist a bit. Medium finish.

Not as opulent as the 09, 10 or 15. Classically built and enjoyable now.

Fades after 24 hours of slow ox. (1928 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
