Tasted by Sperls on 12/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Very nice mature Bordeaux still in good shape and drinking v well. Dark fruits w integrated tannins, tar, pencil and medium finish. Great with steak. (676 views)
Tasted by stjl on 9/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Very nice but will be on the downside soon (637 views)
Tasted by nwaller on 1/22/2023 & rated 91 points: Very good indeed. Wine is aging and still has life in it. Smooth with good length. oak leather blackberry tobacco vanilla (1079 views)
Tasted by Che Gannarelli on 8/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Great bottle. Much better than the last I had. Very good concentration. Dried black fruits and dried violets with lots of nature Oak notes. Shoe trees. Certainly fully mature, but not flagging. (1302 views)
Tasted by NarunP on 5/30/2022 & rated 89 points: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc

Smudgy looking, opaque, tiring and dull. Cork is deformed and loose.

Hello funky town! Nose is not for everybody. Fermented nut, kimchi, black tea, horse manure, wet log.

Resolved tannin, medium body, medium acidity. Red currant, wild berry, smoke, tobacco leaf, black olive, kambucha,

The condition of the bottle requires an hour of slow decanting to be serviceable. Drink now with a downhill trajectory. 89- (1443 views)
Tasted by msauer on 1/15/2022 & rated 90 points: Reife warme Frucht, (Holunder ?)Beeren. Satt, schmeichelnd. Kaum noch Holz (1447 views)
Tasted by RolandFranz on 10/7/2021 & rated 92 points: Très agréablement surpris. (1566 views)
Tasted by msauer on 6/23/2021 & rated 89 points: reife Süße. voll, fast fett (1503 views)
Tasted by canan on 5/15/2021 & rated 91 points: This has evolved very nicely and is just perfectly mature right now. Actually, the wine performed a lot better than I originally expected.
It is showing a wonderful balance between aged flavors, wet forest floor and mushrooms, but still has a touch of fresh fruit.
It does not seem to be affected by the vintage and has a good balance. (1418 views)
Tasted by Hans Lukas on 4/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Der Wein ist jetzt perfekt. Schöne Altersfarbe, Karmesinrot mit rotbraunem Rand, weiche Tanine, Frucht, schwarze Trüffel. Sehr klassisch. Am besten bei Kellertemperatur. (1338 views)
Tasted by Hans Lukas on 12/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Rubinrot mit bräunlichem Rand; schmeichlerische Frucht, Waldhimbeere vorherrschend, Cassis, sehr rund. Jetzt trinken. Nicht karaffieren. Am ersten Tag toll, am zweiten Tag baut der Wein schwer ab. (1341 views)
Tasted by Hans Lukas on 5/14/2020 & rated 89 points: Karminrot, an den Rändern ins Bräunliche gehend; Waldhimbeere, ganz weiches Cassis, etwas Leder, schön eingebundenes Tanin. Macht Spaß, wird aber möglicherweise nicht besser. (1468 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 10/23/2019: Deep ruby red colour with brick edges. Medium (+) nose with tobacco, leather, black pepper, red plum, smoke, autumn leaves and forest floor. Medium taste of sweet tobacco, autumn leaves, sweet pepper, black tea, red bell pepper and licorice. Medium (-) acidity. Medium (-) and rounded tannins. Medium body. Needs some air. From a double magnum bottle. A great Bordeaux that drinks well now with some air. Goes well with beef or lamb. (205 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 7/26/2019 & rated 91 points: Very impressed on how this has held up and actually evolved. Color is garnet with no bricking. The nose is mature with black cherry, blackcurrant, leather, tobacco, and forest floor. On the palate, it is dry with medium acid, medium tannins with a silky-rounded texture. It feels almost velvety. Some iron notes along with meaty ones. For such a ripe vintage, there is no sign of overripeness. The fruit although tempered by time, it is still fresh. Finish is of mid plus length. The wine is delicious and ready to be drunk. It should stay like this for another 3 to 5 years but I doubt there is room for improvement. (1883 views)
Tasted by JAKjr on 6/18/2019 & rated 90 points: Whooa,
Didn't know quite what to suspect-my only bottle. I lucked out. I think it is at peak now. A beautiful sweet core. Had with grilled steak. it worked OK-but it would work in a lot of places-take it to your place. A perfectly balanced Bordeaux nose- it's got everything including the mint/eucalyptus elements. I guess I liked it. WINE ON! (1826 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 11/9/2018: The age helped this wine. I had younger vintages that just seemed flat. The fruit is subtle on this as well, but the maturity adds secondary notes of earth and leather and minerals that round it out. (1047 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 1/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Second Sunday Group: 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Barb's): Popped and poured with dinner. Opens with a nice mix of red and black currant fruit, leather and earth. Medium-bodied with softened tannins and flavors of red fruit, earth and dried tobacco. Immensely enjoyable now but will clearly hold for some time. Now-2028. (3444 views)
Tasted by frenchiecagowine on 10/7/2017 & rated 88 points: Tasted blind, textbook old Bordeaux, everyone guessed. Not much fruit left, strong notes of leather, stable, coffee, earth, dusty cellar, mushrooms. I am a big fan of Cantemerle, but this was not an easy vintage and it shows. Tannins are still present, and together with acidity and lack of fruit, it brings some imbalance to the wine. (3164 views)
(3560 views)
Tasted by stayhappy21 on 4/11/2017 & rated 88 points: Drank this at Li Bai (Sheraton Towers) with my wine mates last night. Theme of the evening: Bordeaux wines 10 years and above.

A rustic Bordeaux. Some notes of oak, old leather, and musky cupboard. The age is showing through the brownish hues and development of secondary coffee and toffee notes. (3581 views)
Tasted by frenchiecagowine on 4/9/2017 & rated 90 points: I didn't take specific notes but I remember I really enjoyed this wine. Typical old Bordeaux with almost a touch of sweetness on the end palate. It drinks beautifully now and I think it is at its peak. (3532 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 12/15/2016 & rated 91 points: Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2016-?; Bordeaux 2003 and 2004 (@ My place): Beautiful and classical bouquet with dark forest fruits, leather and stable smells. On the palate dark berries, cigar, tobacco, good acidity and tannin. A mature and beautiful wine. Ready now and the next few years. (3407 views)
Tasted by jonesbrents on 11/1/2016 & rated 79 points: Bartles & James made something similar in 1985. Not worth the effort expended to pull the cork. (2735 views)
Tasted by drdebs on 7/26/2016 & rated 90 points: Very nice older Bordeaux, still bright and lovely. Drinking very well. (2575 views)
Tasted by wythes on 5/27/2016 & rated 91 points: Was pleasantly surprised by this wine. I've had other Cantemerle vintages that disappointed but this one was good. It definitely should be paired with steak - something I didn't do. (2643 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

Read more about Haut Medoc and its wines Long-standing fame The legally created division into Médoc and Haut-Médoc dates from 1935. But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
