Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 278 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ddhanraj on 11/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Outrageous sediments but after decanting twice and 2 hours drank like a true California cab. 2 more bottles to go can’t wait. (328 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 5/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Still holding up well … if a bit mellow Smooth and flavorful (1166 views)
Tasted by timothynbond on 3/18/2021 & rated 88 points: Deep purple with a hint of bricking at the edges. Very dark fruit on the noise, especially plums, with a hint of tobacco. Medium-plus body with medium acid and medium-low tannins that still had a bit of grip. Lots of leather on the palate with some blackberry and chocolate that came out with time in the glass (this certainly improved with air). Enjoyable enough, but lacking in pizzazz I would like to see at this price point. (1880 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 2/28/2021 & rated 90 points: Open and expressive nose. Does not have acidity and fruit to age more. On decline. Drink soon. (1746 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 8/25/2020: Lambert's bottle. Mature nose with rusty sweet cherry fruit and resolved tannins suggests early 2000 California cabernet. Still drinks well, very well, but the wine has peaked. (2250 views)
(1982 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 2/9/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted 45 minutes. Deep ruby red. Notes of raspberry, cherry, cassis with soft tannins, nice finish. Not a particularly complex wine but very satisfying. (1746 views)
Tasted by JCaress on 12/31/2019 & rated 91 points: Still good, but time to drink it. (1354 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 11/10/2019 & rated 91 points: A bit of dryness on the palate give the impression this is past peak—but not dead by any means. Quite expressive. On the savory side with leafy can elements on the nose and palate. Nice core of dark cherry fruit. Good. Drink up, won’t get better. (1536 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 10/30/2019 & rated 93 points: Like butter! Smoky and earthy on the nose at opening, decanted before dinner and the wine evolved to a crisp cherry, raspberry flavor, lots of depth and silky smooth. (1194 views)
Tasted by Hawk94 on 1/3/2019 & rated 94 points: A classic Napa cab! Dark purple almost inky red, creamy blue berry, black berry bouquet, big and bold, firm but lush creamy sweet tannins, chocolate, mocha, vanilla, licorice, elegant style, very much like its big brother- Hillside select, but at a fraction of cost and just slightly muddy and chunky in mid-palate (which I fully agree with the review below by John). Balanced, but personally would like to have a touch of more acidity. Nevertheless, This wine can go head-to-head with any Napa cabs, except a few iconics. Well done! (2111 views)
Tasted by sfarwig on 12/31/2018 & rated 93 points: Fantastic bottle, drinking very well right now. Enjoyed with good friends on New Years Eve. (1630 views)
Tasted by mlawren1 on 1/13/2018 & rated 94 points: Really great place. Berries and cherries. Finishes with chocolate and earth. (3230 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 12/22/2017 & rated 95 points: Awesome on the first taste. Deep and rich, full bodied, great structure and a long full mouthfinish (3105 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 10/23/2017 & rated 93 points: Big cab, nicely resolved at this stage. Is slightly muddled in the mid-palate. Great blue and black fruit but a nice balance of sweetness and dryness. (3613 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 10/17/2017 & rated 89 points: Ruby core with garnet edges. A touch herbal on the nose with some mint, and dark berries. Medium tannins (5.5/10) and medium bodied. Similar on the palate with some spices and oaky notes. Medium bodied. Drink till 2019. (3040 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 7/28/2017 & rated 93 points: Post Golf Dinner w/Friends: TLV had mentioned that he had never really been impressed by the One Point Five, so it was time to show him why this is worth purchasing and cellaring a bit. Aromas of violets, lavender, red plum and dark berry fruit. Hints of saddle leather and spice box with air. Soft tannins with a wonderful velvety mouthfeel. Flavors of black and red fruits on the palate. Long finish. In a wonderful place right now but will hold for a few years at this level. Drink now-2023. (3581 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 4/30/2017 & rated 91 points: Slow oxed for 1.5 hours but probably needed a decant. Aromas of dusty berry, dried cherry, blackberry, iron and cassis. Classic Napa Valley nose. Flavors of blackberry, iron, dark cherry, earth and a sour dark fruit note. Think it needs some more air. Will revisit in 2 hours.

Much improved. Fruit is much fuller and carries over to the finish. (3141 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 4/28/2017 & rated 90 points: Medium garnet red. Nose was a little herbaceous with dark red cherries. Medium tannins (5.5/10) and medium body. Dark red berries and a touch of black fruit, some dirt too. Great structure and medium plus finish. Drink till 2018. (2867 views)
Tasted by smphelps on 4/2/2017 & rated 90 points: Purple maroon. Bold blackberry, vanilla nose. Steak wine, needs food. Blackberry, ripe plum, ripe and full. Long. (2705 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/14/2016 & rated 92 points: Sunday Group: 2006 Napa Cabernets (Our house): Purplish crimson color. Hedonistic and forward, with a mix of blue and black fruit leaping from the glass. Velvety tannins- very much in the same vein as wine D in terms of the texture- along with flavors of blue and black fruit, spice and cocoa. Finishes with length and balance. Begins to show just a bit of heat, but remains very tasty.

My #3, Domino's #1
Group #1, 39 pts (4048 views)
Tasted by tfharris on 7/12/2016 & rated 94 points: One of the best cabs I've had in quite a long time. Drinking very very well. (3924 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 7/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Crimson red with a deep and dark ruby core. Some damp forest floor, cassis, light barnyard and bramble notes on the nose. Moderate tannins (7/10) with dark fruits and dark cocoa. Some light truffles and earthy mushrooms. Full bodied and moderate plus to long finish with some light minerality in the finish. Drink till 2021. (2891 views)
Tasted by Corkdork79 on 6/13/2016 & rated 95 points: Wine had aged well, much better than when I drank one in 2013 (3271 views)
Tasted by Thornhaven on 5/28/2016: Tinsley Island (3045 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
