Tasted by OenophilistMN on 1/26/2024 & rated 92 points: One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Sediment in the bottle and the screen. Moderate nose of blackberry jam during decant. Wine was clear; deep purple with no bricking and a moderate clear halo. After resting, nose added a chocolate mousse component to what can only be described as a blackberry-blueberry compote. In the mouth: more of the same with plenty of acid in support without it upsetting the harmony of the wine. These wines are usually a little fruit-bombish but they are a crowd pleaser at the table. Long finish ending with chocolate mousse. I was pleased to say the least. (206 views)
Tasted by OneOfTheBasicFoodGroups on 8/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Sadly, the last one. Happily there's the 2007s. (386 views)
Tasted by patatty on 1/1/2023 & rated 94 points: Soft tannins with cassis flavors and aromas. Dark red color. Opened up with fruit flavors (cherry and blueberry) after decanting for several hours. (669 views)
Tasted by OneOfTheBasicFoodGroups on 12/30/2022 & rated 94 points: On opening, the first thought was uh-oh I waited too long to enjoy this bottle. But, over next four days (was sealing the bottle with a vac-u vin) the wine started getting back on it's feet and almost back to the level that caused me to fall in love with it. I wouldn't ignore the signals though and will get to my last bottle sooner rather than later. (657 views)
Tasted by Manuaia on 11/29/2022 & rated 84 points: Baked dark red fruit. Hint of bret. Fruit is slightly drying up. A bit hot and alcoholic. 15.5%. Absolutely zero merlot flavors. Pencil lead. Not my favorite but i can see why they get the scores. Old world palates will not be fans.
2 hours in and is way more harmonious. Still baked fruit and alcoholic but lots of upfront juicy fruit. (730 views)
Tasted by fdub on 5/19/2022 & rated 94 points: Round and plummy flavors. In a nice spot and great out of Mag. (1079 views)
Tasted by OneOfTheBasicFoodGroups on 12/25/2021 & rated 96 points: My Xmas wine, paired with a rib roast covered in a coffee/brown sugar/nacho chilli rub.

Decanted for three hours (not sure it needed it, but what the hell...). Wine is fully mature, balanced in every way. Super dark color, definitely undertones of chocolate. (1266 views)
Tasted by fdub on 8/28/2021 & rated 95 points: From Mag. Super impressive rich chocolate nose and intense baked spices. (1417 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 8/5/2021: In OCNJ with Stephanie/Chris/Valerie. Decanted about 2 hours prior, last bottle in 2018 felt like it had not quite settled and opened. Paired with sausage and peppers (courtesy of Steph). Drank over an hour.

Deep ruby/garnet color, no signs of age. Nose showing dark and blue fruits, licorice. Palate of "plum syrup", black raspberry, mocha, mushroom. Viscous texture through the mid palate. Full body and long finish.

The decant with this bottle made a big difference - the alcohol and show polish was gone. This is a big, lush wine that may be too syrupy for some palates. Did well with the sausages and spice. I recall the 90s vintages of this wine to be more restrained. I am a fan of Pahlmeyer's wines but this one stylistically is not what I would seek in a Merlot (1470 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 7/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Hour decant. I preferred this to the 2006 Red. Loads of ripe blueberries coated with vanilla Oak. Very smooth with a long finish. (1488 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 5/9/2021 & rated 94 points: Dark crimson in color. 15.2% ABV. Gorgeous nose of red and blue fruits, Whitman Sampler box and violets. Full bodied with ample acidity and notable balance. The wine has a great core of sweet, rich fruit. Cherry, blueberry liqueur, cassis and cocoa on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Stunning Merlot that has aged brilliantly. Best over the next 2-4 years. (1461 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 4/28/2021 & rated 90 points: Nose: 90. Palate: 90. (Tasted blind) (1220 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux_Jon on 4/28/2021 & rated 82 points: Strawberries mixed with volatile acidity, I correctly guess this double blind as a California Merlot. Yuck! High alcohol and high tannins this was quite terrible. Admittedly, I’ve become a Red Burgundy drinker recently, but did I used to like this stuff or is this bottle particularly bad? (1238 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 8/21/2020 & rated 92 points: Fragrant nose. Sweet blueberry and raspberry fruit mixed with chocolate and a hint of pepper. Very fine tannins give this a beautiful mouth feel. A bit of heat but not overly distracting. Very full-bodied and saturated. A big wine. (1444 views)
Tasted by JGvine on 11/29/2019 & rated 91 points: Beautiful Merlot perhaps we caught it at it s peak (1796 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 11/29/2019: Served at Thanksgiving.

Dark red/black color with clear meniscus. On nose, sweet red fruits, red liquor (maybe cassis?), red licorice, and touch of oak. Very smooth on the palate. Full body, medium acidity, medium+ tannins and long finish - palate profile similar to nose. Got better with air. this has aged very well. 92+/- (1639 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 10/11/2019 & rated 92 points: Plenty of alcohol, but also plenty rich blue and black fruits with some sweet Oak. Smooth despite the alcohol and a long finish. (1711 views)
Tasted by dransford on 9/24/2019 & rated 95 points: Awesome, sweet but not overly so. Such good blue fruits. In a good spot. (1854 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 2/17/2019 & rated 94 points: Bright crimson in color. 15.2% ABV. Soaring nose of red and blue fruits, leather, licorice and spice box. Powerful, dense and full bodied. Well balanced. Cassis liqueur, plum sauce, blueberries and chocolate on the palate. The finish is exceptionally long and silky. Just a stunning Merlot and without question one of the very best examples of this variety from the state of California. Best over the next 1-3 years. (1969 views)
Tasted by nywine68 on 2/8/2019 & rated 92 points: Sweet, soft and fruity at first. Dark loam and plums Merlot essence on the nose. Dense and concentrated with chocolate flavors. This will easily last another 10+ years. (1530 views)
Tasted by Bonanza on 1/21/2019 & rated 93 points: Still lots of fruit, but aging improved wine. (1597 views)
Tasted by markcic on 11/15/2018 & rated 93 points: 2.5 years later and still a beautiful bottle of wine. Dark fruit and chocolate on the nose. The palate is dark berries, plums, tobacco, some chocolate and a touch of nutmeg. The finish is long and full. At 12 years old this wine is still singing. Unfortunately my last bottle. (1675 views)
Tasted by czender1 on 8/12/2018 & rated 94 points: 94. With the age it has really developed well. The balance with nice red fruit, some clove and pepper and well integrated tannins. Long on the palate. (1899 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 7/4/2018 & rated 89 points: In OCNJ for bday party/July 4 celbration. Good excuse to try this, bought several years ago at auction. Slow oxed for an hour, drank over 90 minutes

Rich ruby/purple color. Nose was dark fruits, licorice, olives and some alcohol/shoe polish (not in an interesting way) that started to blow off later...Palate was lush, plums, black raspberry, dark fruits, mocha and earth. Nice texture through the mid palate, finish about 30 seconds.

I am a big fan of Pahlmeyer's wines. for this one I had to get through the heat/shoe polish on the nose. This is more of a "bug" than a "feature"...some might disagree but it doesn't add to the wine (IMO). Would give it a long decant next time to see if I can get this to dissipate. (1915 views)
Tasted by czender1 on 3/31/2018 & rated 92 points: concentrated with a nice bouquet, lots of red fruit with a hint of spice on the palate and good depth but some sig. heat from the etoh. better the 2nd day. Still pretty awesome. (1835 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
