Tasted by eboracum on 1/21/2024 & rated 91 points: My three bottles of this have been quite variable. This shows quite a lot of richness and complexity (cherry, leather and spice) with a refreshing varnish note which is, I think, less obtrusive than in the previous bottle. The wine slipped down graciously but I would have appreciated a bit more firmness on the finish. My best bottle was the first about 5 years ago, which had that. Still very good, though. (1182 views)
Tasted by Carson.McEvoy on 12/26/2023 & rated 93 points: This bottle exhibited elegance, softness, and smoothness, almost resembling a mature Burgundy. The nose teased with notes of cherries, leather, and herbs, exuding sophistication. Its palate featured great peppery nuances, capturing the essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. As it was from my birth year, this bottle held sentimental value. Complex yet approachable, it proved to be a delightful and pleasurable drink. (985 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 12/4/2023: Fantastic (1289 views)
Tasted by WindFlyer on 11/25/2023 & rated 93 points: new and aged Rhones: dark garnet, somewhat opaque and medium plus body. tertiary nose of hung game, soy sauce, stewing plums, leather and black olives. it takes time in the glass to evolve from the savoury meat and soy to a macerated fruit vein that brightens to red cherry. liquorice, spice, puehr tea, and balsamic notes grace the fruit layers and persist on the moderate finish.

fully matured (and perhaps more), it seemed like this bottle was a day away from going over the cliff… even so, it was a pleasure to catch it, and wondered how it showed just a couple of years back. drink up!

14.5% AbV; 65% Grenache/ 20% Mourvèdre/ 10% Syrah/ 5% Vaccarèse, Counoise and Muscardin; aged for fifteen months in old foudres. (1054 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 11/25/2023 & rated 93 points: A Rhône Rapture (K&L Wine Merchant - San Francisco): Nose of sweet aromas of something like a port (gentle and not heavy though), coffee if it was naturally sweet (but not because of added sugar and cream), aged prunes that has a light weight to it with a nice freshness.

Matches the nose completely. This almost was like a desert wine but in a good way. Not heavy nor too sweet, just right. Damp mulch with wet stones trail into the finish.

Tasted with a friend and he thought this was funky on the nose, something like blue cheese, which I did not get at all. Maybe this wasn't showing as it was supposed to. Maybe cooked? Starting to think there's no way this was made to taste like a port. Take my score with a handful of salt, this was almost like a dessert wine which doesn't seem to make much sense. (1680 views)
Tasted by tcarter on 11/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Seemed a bit past its prime to me, though Somm said it was drinking perfectly. (894 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/25/2023 flawed bottle: Premium Rhône Tasting (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Light tawny colored core. Stewed scents with obvious VA. Medium weight. Still some sweetness but prickly feel with a short finish. I'm sure there are better bottles of this out there. (1161 views)
Tasted by Amberissey on 5/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Black cherry, brushed steel, dried Provence herbs, burnt ends, star anise, on the nose. Transferring to the palette impeccably. This is a spectacular producer. (1855 views)
Tasted by paintinginacave on 5/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted for an hour. A medium ruby core fading to a medium garnet outer edge. Black cherry, campfire smoke, dried herbs, and a touch of red liquorice jump from the glass. The palate quite literally mirrors the nose in every possible sense with a superb level of intensity and concentration. (1602 views)
Tasted by dglebo on 4/24/2023 & rated 93 points: brown rim, light ruby in color. sweet red fruit nose. the mouth is sweet like red candy apple, softly coating the full tongue. the wine lingers nicely. it's past its peak but delicious. drink now... (1734 views)
Tasted by eboracum on 4/9/2023 & rated 90 points: This bottle was several notches less good than my last bottle in 2018. Still gutsy and rich but infused with a note of varnish, which was not disagreeable at this level and added freshness, but may be at indicator of a VA problem, at least in this bottle. Still just about very good. (1777 views)
Tasted by ChrisR on 2/2/2023 flawed bottle: Last one from my original batch. Like several others, it had a distinct metallic taste, which detracted from the experience. (2166 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/11/2023 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Clos des Papes (By AH): Beautiful and mature bouquet with garrigue and some celery. On the palate red and dark berries, also some celery and a lot of herbs and spices, chocolate, balsamic impressions, good acidity. Still a very beautiful wine, but starting to show age now. Don't wait too long; the wine will not improve anymore. (2142 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 12/30/2022 & rated 93 points: A 4-top at Broders: Double decanted and consumed about 4 hours later. Once this warmed up (my fault for serving it too cold) it was drinking beautifully. Raspberries, floral, red fruit, funk and clay. Really nice! Rustic with bright acidic fruit. Not the best Clos des Pape I've had, but pretty dang good, and one of the better examples of the 2001 that I've had. 93-94 (1794 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/24/2022 & rated 94 points: Colous is aging a bit. Nose is sweet, Grenache up front. Soft, mature attack, plenty of barnyard, local feel. This has arrived, I think (on day 1). On day 2 this seems to loosen up quite a bit, more fruit up front, still lively and wonderful.

Tasted by grub94 on 11/24/2022 & rated 92 points: Classic Clos=== Needed a nour to open up. Deep, bright garnet color.
Dark fruits with garrigue, roasted beef up front with full balanced mouthfeel. Still good acidity (med+) and showing forest floor mushroom on back of palate. Long finish. (1252 views)
Tasted by DonalOB on 8/31/2022 & rated 93 points: Drinking very well. Up against a Vacqueyras Chateau des Tours 2000 (Rayas) and compared well. Split opinion on preference. Drink up. (1790 views)

Tasted by rocknroller on 8/20/2022 & rated 93 points: Siggy's Annual BBQ (Chez Siggy & Jenny's Place, Mpls, MN): Small pour x 2. I'm not sure everyone agreed on this wine tonight. I found it quite intriguing at the outset. Lots of garrigue, sanguin blood notes, iron, earthy with wood spice and pepper, cherry, kirsch, and black raspberry. I loved the complexity and mineral density. It seemed flatter later, and they may be the time open or temperature influence.

Tasted by Milos on 5/21/2022 & rated 92 points: Nose of mid red fruit with touch of spice and earthy notes. Not as intense as expected, both on the nose and palate. The palate is complex with a long finish. Drank over about 2 hours and keep getting more intense and broader. Drinking well but no need to rush. (2023 views)
Tasted by Wine-Solutions on 1/29/2022 & rated 94 points: In SUCH a great place right now! (2601 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 1/21/2022 & rated 95 points: This is so ready. Liquid silk and satin with a rhone touch. Very enjoyable.
Dont wait ! Drink !!!! (2435 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 1/17/2022: Generally similar to my 11/7/20 TN, but I notice tobaccco, olives and anise this time, and the wine has a murkiness, especially as I get toward the bottom of the bottle. I also noted more of a boozy note on the nose on opening, which gradually dissipated over 2-2.5 hours. I write now mainly to wade into the drinking window debate, noting that several writers have said that this is over the hill, with a few others weighing in that it hasn’t hit its prime. I’ll choose the least popular option, stated by Cave D’Argent (great nom de vin, btw) that this is at its apogee (great word, too, as long as I’m throwing compliments around). While the time to integrate the boozy nose argues that more time could be beneficial, that the fruit, acidity and tannins are not only balanced but perfectly integrated says otherwise, at least to me. (All that said, I note significant bottle variation for older CdPs, so some of this might be not so much different tastes as different bottles). Anyway, while I think improvement, at least material improvement, is unlikely, I think that, based on my 2 bottles, holding this level for another for 2-5+ years is very feasible. 95-96 if scoring. Rockss and Fruit (10/3/2003)
(Clos des Papes) Great nose of crushed hot pebbles, cherry liquor, kirsch, wild berries, smoke, little bit of an exotic tomato hint. Elegant but with sweet concentrated fruit and tremendous ripeness. All perfectly ripe red fruits. Seamless yet spreading. Great acid and serious stony complex minerals on the finish. As Yaacov has repeatedly said this is one of the most Burgundian CDP's out there. This was singing on this particular night.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
