Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by K is for Kate on 1/4/2014: I had my first bottle of this several years ago and it seemed disjointed. Last night, I enjoyed my second bottle MUCH more. Everything had come together and it made for pleasant drinking, though nothing profound. (2083 views)
Tasted by Winegirl1959 on 1/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Wonderful! Wish I had opened it a year ago. (2013 views)
Tasted by fullpour on 10/8/2011 & rated 84 points: Not a fan of this one at all; it still felt too much like a vin d'effort, with all kinds of winemaker tricks obscuring what fruit may have originally been there. Funky nose, weird tannins, acidity flown in from somewhere else entirely... a weird mishmash between honest Old World and entirely synthetic New, with little charm or reward. (2386 views)
Tasted by kultcha on 5/15/2010 & rated 89 points: Orange muscat was more on the nose when I first tried this wine at the tasting room in Santa Cruz, Ca. Still a bit now but disappearing fast. Very nice blend, tannins started to smooth out and enjoying the dark fruit flavours still. Will definitely be developing more in the next few years. (2472 views)
Tasted by Green on 9/19/2009 & rated 89 points: Thoroughly enjoyed this syrah and noticed it was different, but couldn't "find" the orange muscat either. Just seemed a little lighter and fruitier (not as spicy) as other syrahs. Very good. (2701 views)
Tasted by Forint on 6/22/2009 & rated 89 points: mostly Syrah so the deep dark fruit is there but with 13% Grenache some lighter strawberry and earth notes make this a nice surprise. It even has a touch of Orange Muscat in it but I could not "find" it (1296 views)
Tasted by umazz on 11/2/2008 & rated 90 points: Big, ripe, in keeping with the old world style of syrah. (949 views)
Tasted by Frodnesor on 10/2/2008 & rated 89 points: Dark purple color, bright cherry and black plum flavors, hangs in there through a smooth finish. Must be the addition of some muscat that brightens it up some. Good stuff. (1328 views)

Bonny Doon Vineyard

Producer website

Bonny Doon was sold in early 2020 to "WarRoom", a wine production and marketing entity formed in 2018. Per a January 2020 Decanter article - https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/californias-bonny-doon-sold-430550/ - "Graham will retain creative control of Bonny Doon’s wines, but production will change from 35,000 cases of 15 different wines annually to just four wines: the flagship red Rhône blend Le Cigare Volant; Le Cigare Blanc (based on Vermentino); Vin Gris de Cigare (a Rhône varietal rosé); and a 100% Picpoul."

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
