Tasted by johnh1001 on 12/21/2022 & rated 98 points: Incredible Leroy spice on the nose. Full and expansive on the palate. Amazing balance, energy and precision. Oh and I also liked the way it tasted. (1255 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/20/2022 & rated 98 points: Everything the 01 served side-by-side has, with the volume and richness turned up several notches. A near perfect wine that was a pleasure to drink and admire for an hour, including with a delicious cassoulet. (1098 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/20/2022 & rated 98 points: The Best Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Dinner (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Alongside the 2001.Rich and spiced from the moment it was opened and I was poured a taste. So much ripe black and red cherry with baking spice, this is enticing and nearly elegant at the same time. Not quite
Grand Cru density, but otherwise as good as it gets. I haven't had this wine since 2015, and it is even better now than ever before. At least tonight's bottle. (2693 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 11/8/2021: GORGEOUS wine. The best wine that night and in a perfect spot. The fruit oooooooooooozes purity of dense bright red berries interlaced with spice and growing sweet earth that shows its age. Perfectly balanced on the tightrope with elegance and finesse. Cool racy acidity that gives it so much freshness. When 2002s are on and the acidity is right, the sweetness of the vintage with the acidity is such a winning combo. Couldn't stop drinking it. Only Leroy BM that I've had that's as close is the 99. (1958 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 10/9/2021 & rated 96 points: This was great and much better than a recent bottle of '96 (not totally surprising given vintages but still). Classic stem and spice aromatics but they aren't overpowering and are in total harmony with the beautiful dark cherry fruit. Impressive balance and refinement. Improved over several hours. (1501 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 8/17/2021 & rated 96 points: Stem and reduction city, the prototypical modern Leroy aromatics. Can nose this for hours. Elegant, sweet but critically balanced palate (unlike pre-2000 Leroy I would argue). (2043/3326) (1437 views)
Tasted by mye on 8/16/2021: Like a bottle of perfume. Sweet earth, soft red berries, spice. Palate shows resolving tannins, balanced acidity, but that intense fruit core is someone elegant on the mouth feel. Is it power? is it finesse? That was a good one right there.... (1249 views)
Tasted by Satoshi Nakamoto on 8/15/2021 & rated 99 points: Big Burg Energy: Loved the cloudiness of this wine. Incredible notes of fresh florals, bright red berries, and delicate spices. The balance, tension, length, and acidity are really unmatched here. Drinking unbelievably well. Really wowed by this. (1577 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 11/21/2020 & rated 96 points: Floral, cool aromatics that usher in new generation of Leroy. Sweetness and depth on complete palate. (661/3326) (1299 views)
Tasted by WIBA on 11/21/2020 & rated 96 points: Dominated this Leroy Beaux Monts tasting with a yard stick. Everything that you're looking for in a Leroy. Freshness, energy, seductive fizzy nose, but beautifully balanced acidity from the red bright fruits. Elegance with weight! Love. (1081 views)
Tasted by M.S.L. on 3/28/2019 & rated 100 points: Bourgogne 2002 tasting. Many top wines from some of the best producers, Rousseau, Roumier, DRC, Leroy etc; 3/28/2019-4/28/2019 (Restaurant Palægade, Copenhagen): Wow!! This is amazing. I am not sure my words can do this wine justice. It is cool on the nose with small red berries and a little smoke. So incredibly tasty with just the right amount of extract, stamina and red fruits, but kept in check by precisely the right level of acidity. The mouthfeel is marvelous too. I tend to score wines a bit higher than the average user here, - especially this type of wine. However I am left with nothing I could come up with that could enhance my experience with this wine and I can point to no wine in the world I would rather drink. Therefor I have to give 100 points (a first for me in here). (2302 views)
Tasted by BradE on 1/17/2019: This bottle had it all, and lived up to our high expectations. Brilliant nose, stand out wine. WOTN. (1899 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/16/2019 & rated 97 points: Heidi's Gang of Six Redux: Some Burg Heavy Hitters (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Murky dark red color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Same bottle as BradE. This was a total wow wine, mesmerizing on all levels. What a nose, dried earth, potpourri, loam, soil, funky with some wonderful dank notes, dried flowers, red cherries and oh so lifted. A savory top note emerges later as well. The palate actually takes things to another level; earthy, red cherry, sour cherry, briary, nicely spiced with a floral sandalwood essesnce on a medium full bodied frame; seamless, and very long. In a word, brilliant. WOTN. 96+ to 97pts. (2037 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 1/16/2019 & rated 95 points: Same btl as R&Rler and Brad E. Thanks Siggy! Deliciously loaded with fruit and complexity. Only markdown for me was the weight and docile energy of the 2002 vintage influence. I own a decent amount of '02s and its a vintage I'm not 100% in love with. Many wines from 2002 seem to lose a bit of the weightless finesse and refinement I love in Burgundy. Much to love here though and I count myself lucky to help drink one. This wine was cloudy like many Leroys and would have benefited from sitting upright for a couple days. Leroy seems to be the poster producer for unfiltered :). 94pts++ /95pts- (2261 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 2/13/2017: There’s sandalwood, Hoisin, smoked meats and black cherry on the nose. It is full, sweet, creamy and luscious. There fabulous intensity of fruit and great drive. Length is fantastic. (3245 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 12/3/2016 & rated 95 points: Loved it; very open with lots of finely-detailed Vosne spice, redcurrant and raspberry. Just the faintest touch of stem which gives it a little extra lift. Weightless. (2977 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/10/2015 & rated 95 points: Ramonet Montrachet and Leroy Dinner (goosefoot - Chicago IL): Open 1.5 hours before serving. Red and black fruit with Leroy/ Vosne spice everywhere. Once again there is plenty of structure but in the background so that pleasure is in the forefront. My Red WOTN, overall WOTN for some others. (4309 views)
Tasted by tooch on 8/4/2015 & rated 95 points: Dinner in St. Louis (Niche): Amazing nose of spicy red fruits...very Leroy. The palate was complex, textured, and deep. This had the typical '02 juiciness to the palate, but underneath the glossy exterior were layers of roses, mushrooms, minerals, and spice. Easy to get lost in the glass... (4233 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 7/3/2015 & rated 95 points: After a few mediocre bottles of Leroy recently I wanted to make myself feel better with a sure thing. This did not disappoint. As wonderful as it was 2 years ago this bottle seemed ever so slightly mellower and emphasized more black fruit with a interesting coffee/ chocolate note. Outstanding spice throughout that was not over powering or too stylistic. Super balance and length. 2002 Leroys are really something. Happy this ended up being tasting note 3000! (3652 views)
Tasted by BradE on 7/12/2014: Great funky nose, that kept on giving. Spicy palate, long long finish. I liked it a lot. Not a rock star, but very good and fun to drink. (2883 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/13/2014: The whole table thought this was a 2004, it was quite green and spicy on the nose and a little skinny in the mouth. Paul did not like the wine, I actually quite enjoyed it. The nose offered up some sandalwood and floral spice. It was red fruited and crunchy in the mouth, compact and lean with decent cut to the finish. (2847 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 3/16/2013 & rated 95 points: Decanted and drank over 4 hours. After about an hour, a wonderfully bright nose of red fruit, smoke, black fruit with lots of spice emerged. The palate was dense and concentrated, holding back lots of layers. Plenty of spice and candied cherries in a dense core of fruit. Very long lingering finish. Very Leroy, very sexy. Interestingly, with more time in the glass, the tannins seemed to become more apparent but were never bothersome. (3091 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 2/11/2012 & rated 94 points: At Tru vs the 02 Les Brûlées. A beautiful rich dark fruit smokey sexy nose. The taste perfectly matched the nose and this got better over the two hours we had this open. Very Leroy. This has a long life ahead. (3424 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 9/2/2011 & rated 93 points: David Niederauer's 4th Annual Hobo Dinner: A Night of Surprises (The Plumed Horse Restaurant, Saratoga, California): Bricking, slightly cloudy, medium red violet color; stemmy, tobacco, tart cranberry, sous bois nose; tasty, velvety textured, sous bois, tobacco, tart red fruit palate; medium-plus finish (2890 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 5/7/2009 & rated 92 points: 2nd Annual Hobo's Winetasting Dinner - a Niederauer Production (Plumed Horse Restaurant, Saratoga, California): Medium dark red color with pale meniscus; earthy, funky, green nose; herbal, green pea, tart red fruit, mineral, rosehips and bark palate; medium-plus finish 92+ pts. Domaine Leroy

Producer website

Domaine Leroy is a negociant/wine producer based in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. It makes a range of wines from Pinot Noir that comes from some of the most iconic vineyards in the world, including Le Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and is second only to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of price and quality. Those wines made from estate grown fruit are sold under the Domaine Leroy label.

The domaine was founded by Francois Leroy, a wine merchant based in Auxey-Duresses, in 1868. It was expanded under his son Joseph and grandson Henri throughout the early 1900s, and in 1942, Henri Leroy was involved with the purchase of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti alongside Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. Leroy and Villaine saw massive potential in the plots and vines DRC already held and, rather than see the domaine split up among various proprietors, decided to buy it together.

In 1974, Henri's daughter Lalou Leroy took over this co-management of DRC alongside Aubert de Villaine; she had also inherited Maison Leroy from her father after his death in 1980. Leroy left Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1991 following a dispute with Villaine, and began to focus on her own domaine.

Domaine Leroy was expanded in 1988 with the purchase of estates in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin, and with 21 hectares (52 acres) of vineyards, became a domaine. These holdings include plots in several grand cru sites in the Côte de Nuit, as well as in Corton, plots in eight premier cru vineyards, and vineyards that fall under both village and regional appellations. While most of Domaine Leroy's wines are red, there are a few white wines made from Chardonnay and Aligoté as well.

Lalou Bize-Leroy also owns and directs Domaine d'Auvenay.

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Les Beaux Monts

Beaux Monts covers a little over 11 hectares and is further subdivided into Beaux Monts, Les Hautes Beaux Monts, Les Beaux Monts Hauts, and Les Beaux Monts Bas. It borders the grand cru vineyard of Echézeaux, though at a higher altitude. Quality is variable with some wines described as "weedy" and they are typically less dense than wines from lower altitudes. Better examples may have a high-toned perfume. Top producers for Beaux Monts include Domaine Bertagna, Bruno Clavelier, Leroy, Hudelot-Noëllats, Louis Jadot, and Henri Jayer.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Vosne Romanée is one of the smallest wine villages in Burgundy The wines possess diverse characteristics, but they can generally considered to have complexity and longevity beyond nearly all other wines in the world. The village has six grand crus: Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and La Grande Rue. While there is monopoly control of four of the six grand crus, the village has at least forty growers sharing its vineyards. The top premier cru includes Les Malconsorts, Cros Parantoux, Les Chaumes, and Clos des Réas.
