Tasted by ChrisWagner on 2/16/2021 & rated 89 points: This was really pretty good.

Right after I opened this I feared it might be heat damaged as it has a vaguely port-y characteristic. Thankfully, after a bit of air this greatly dissipated.

Enjoyable over 4+ hours. Was probably best at the end, so I can see this holding on for a bit longer. Probably not improving much though.

Lots of sediment. Very dark color. (228 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 9/15/2020: Remains superb -- bright and full of fruit, lively acidity. It's amazing how consistent and beautiful these wines are. A- (262 views)
Tasted by Doblk on 6/19/2013 & rated 84 points: Complex aromatics with earth, vegetables, herbs and cedar. Palate interesting but not well integrated. Prominent wood and acid with some sour plum but tannin and fruit are going. I liked it much better a couple of years ago. (1001 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 10/5/2012: 13.5% alcohol. Dark cherry color. Beautiful nose of black olive, strawberry, and minerals. This wine is just rocking. It's so vibrant and pretty to drink, with a slightly rustic side to it. It has the acidity and back end structure to keep going. Just a fun, tasty wine. A- (1395 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 12/31/2011: 13.5% alcohol. Great showing for this wine. Dark red color. Gorgeous nose of black olive, strawberry, and minerals. In the mouth, the texture has become caressing and less tart, with terrific fruit and earth and olive notes. Bright acidity still, but it feels refined. Juicy finish. A- (1746 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 8/15/2011: 13.5% alcohol. Served blind. Great aromatics of wild strawberry, olives, and minerals. This is just drinking so beautifully. Consistent with past bottles. Just delicious and very fine. A- (1426 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 7/19/2011: 13.5% alcohol. This is in a good place but still has upside. Dark red color. Aromatic nose of wild strawberry, olive, and minerals. In the mouth, it has smoothed out somewhat over the course of the past six months, though it remains a bit sauvage. The wild berry fruit is delicious, complemented by generous olive, pepper, and slightly floral undertones. Bright acidity and a juicy, slightly tannic finish. This will continue to unwind with more time in bottle. A- (1432 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 1/22/2011: 13.5% alcohol. Still holding in a really good, youthful place. Not much has changed over the past year. Dark cherry color. Aromatic nose of strawberry, cherry, olives, and spice. In the mouth, racy and focused, with elegant but concentrated fruit, olive, spice, and minerals notes. Mouth-watering acidity and a long finish. A- (983 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 2/27/2010: 13.5% alcohol. Hard not to love this wine. It's got a pretty dark cherry color. Awesome nose of black olives, wild strawberry, and dusty cherry. In the mouth, still quite tight, but it's just so tasty. The fruit and olive notes deliver a terrific punch, and there's tangy acidity and still good tannins on the finish. This is going to be a great wine to track over the years. It's got the stuffing to make it to 2017 for sure. A- (1106 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 11/16/2009: 13.5% alcohol. This is just such good stuff. Amazingly complex. Dark red color. Stunningly complex nose of black olives, pepper, and wild strawberry fruit. In the mouth, still quite tight but just delightfully pure and elegant with layers of flavor that just tickle the palate. Plenty of acidity. Long finish. Still tight. Given that the 1996 was great in 2008, I can see this enjoying a decade or more of very pleasant life. An amazing QPR. A- (1222 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 10/13/2009: 13.5% alcohol. I know this is early for this wine, but I wanted to check on it. Somewhat tight, but still gorgeously aromatic and tasty. Dark red color. Lovely nose of wild strawberry, flowers, and minerals. It's aromatically compelling in spite of being so obviously tight. In the mouth, surprisingly rich and dark in palate feel, although the fruit profile maintains that bright, refreshing strawberry. Lots of acidity and minerality. Long finish showing some tannins. This is just plain fantastic. A memorable Cotes du Rosa. A- (1259 views)

Varietal character (Appellation America)---- Also: International and historical summary of Carignane

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
