Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 73 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Pinot Peter on 12/8/2023: Dark red, good acidity and good length. No discernible nose for me. I a not going repeat the typical fruit flavours and taste descriptions that are in so many previous notes on this wine.
This wine is drinking exceptionally well for me at this point in it,s evolution.
It has a gripping sweetness and an underlying tannic spine that meld well together giving me great pleasure in finishing this bottle and wanting more. What else do you need to know. (912 views)
Tasted by Andronicus on 5/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Black berrie quite acidic, tanins a bit rough, not well integrated, needs time i assume (1497 views)
Tasted by whitmanlholt on 3/5/2023 & rated 91 points: Slow oxed for roughly two hours. This is a solid, robust red & purple wine with modest sediment at the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get black currants, black cherries, and some vanilla. In the mouth, this is a lush and juicy wine that displays mixed black fruits. The lingering finish has some plum and ash, but here the wood also starts to poke through. Overall, this is a nice, well-polished wine. It is somewhat “international” in style and feel, but that is true of many mid-2000s Bordeaux, so it's a product of its time. The oak is too much at moments, but I wouldn’t call this version “spoofed” or overdone. It should have many years left and will likely improve with more time. 91 points. (1711 views)
Tasted by Khon Kaen on 11/15/2022 & rated 93 points: Had drinks at my sister's birthday dinner. Pair with Peking Duck. Decant for 90 minutes. Perfect cork. Very nice nose of blackcurrant fruity, oak, tobacco, fresh floral aroma. The flavor is black olives, black currant and blackberries. It's ripe tannins, round texture. Very nice wine. It is unforgettable. (2291 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 10/14/2022 & rated 90 points: Tastes like it was from a VERY hot year. Tasted blind I would say it's from a warm climate. Chocolate brownie note all over the nose. Beyond that it's fruit forward with jammy red cherries and raspberries. But how does it taste? More subtle; with smooth and rounded fruit notes integrated with smoked wood, dust and tobacco. Full bodied with medium tannins and medium acid.

You could cellar this 3 or so more years. (2285 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 7/17/2022: This is too young to open now without days of decant....Classic balance is there. Just need time to unwind.... (2362 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/26/2022: Had a really small pour of this. Surprisingly good overall and very approachable now. Came off medium bodied with finesse and pretty red and black fruits, graphite, well atoned. Impression 93 to maybe even 94pts. (2188 views)
Tasted by tbuysse on 11/15/2021 & rated 95 points: Top wine from a mediocre vintage. Structure, depth, nose, complexity. Delivers that Pessac touch that only Smith, Pape, Chevalier and some others can deliver. Not as stellar as the Brion's, but an excellent wine. (2842 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 9/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Slow ox 4 hours; full bodied, deep garnet purple, black currant, earth, iron, cedar, fine tannins. Drank half on night 2 and was identical. Delicious. (2468 views)
Tasted by hiker_guy on 6/20/2021: Double decanted back into the bottle 1 hour prior to dinner. Poured into glasses about 20 minutes before dinner.
Dark in color.
Nose is dark and toasty. Heavy toast on the oak barrels and lots of it.
Notes of dark fruit and earth as well.
Palate Is dark and toasty. Heavily toasted oak really shows up front.
It's in balance though and the fruit is pretty dark and tannic as well and with added air it starts to come together nicely.
The finish is pretty long and dark.
This wine will age for another decade at least and it will soften and be lovely. All the components are there for a long lived wine.
Would buy again. (3070 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/27/2021 flawed bottle: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (R&D's): Double blind. Corked. It was a very subtle case but did become more noticeable as the wine sat in the glass. Those who weren't sure were absolutely convinced when this was unveiled and realized what this should have shown like. Clearly not a clean bottle. (R&D) (3025 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 11/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind, no decant but slow-oxed for an hour or so. This was fine but I think a 1h decant wouldn't do any harm. Fine, fruity nose of mostly red berries, a bit of sweet spices, sous-bois, leather and a bit of wet earth. Medium intensity overall. The tannic structure is firm but pretty well integrated yielding a pleasantly round palate. This is already within the drinking window even if at an early stage. A more simple, less layered wine when comparing to the strong 2015 or 2016 vintages, but very classic and in my view currently the better pick than the over-powering 2009 and 2010 from the estate.
Tasted by Bordeaux_Jon on 6/12/2020 & rated 95 points: Tasted double blind from a bottle that was half coravinned months ago by a friend. Thought this was amazing from the get-go but really not sure what it was. Loads of black fruit and tar, and clearly expensive French oak. Kept changing and evolving, with red fruit, cigar, cherry, plum. Though Barolo for a bit and then Napa Cab, but frankly it was too complex for either of those. Settled on Bordeaux from a ripe year, because the acidity was low and the alcohol was a bit high. So much fruit. Thought Palmer 2009 because it seemed like more than the usual amount of Merlot. Turns out this wine has 48% Merlot and was harvested quite late. 2008s are fantastic now in my opinion. The 2008 Smith Haut Lafite is equally as stellar and only about $100. Great stuff. My impression of Coravinning is that it accelerates the aging curse, so for all the lower scoring past reviews, expect some upside. I'm impressed by this wine because I find Pape Clement a bit too over-oaked, Parkerized, and modern. This impressed me more than the 2009, especially with the complexity. (2942 views)
Tasted by dnnk88 on 5/23/2020 & rated 92 points: CB Wine Night #11 - Pape Clement Blind Vertical!: Wine #6 was the 2008 - this was my least favourite of the night and I had thought this was the 2012. Needs more time for sure. The portion i kept overnight improved tremendously thought. Great future! 92/93 (2551 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 6/14/2019 & rated 92 points: Plum, earth notes, medium bodied. (3556 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 3/24/2019 & rated 91 points: Somewhat disappointing......very muted nose. The wine itself required a splash decant x6 + 3 hours of air to evolve. It was thin in the mouth and lacking any fruit on opening with tons of barnyard funk. After time and 'splashing', it developed to a mid-weight in the mouth, with decent enough red/black fruit, lead pencil and a nice stream of acidity all the way through. A decent enough wine with a little coaxing, nothing very special, IMO. (4398 views)
Tasted by gaveaux on 2/23/2019 & rated 92 points: Ready to drink. Deep dark fruit, hint of cedar with that classic graves minerality. Had at a byob restaurant- with lamb - classic combo (3289 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/10/2018: A Matter of Taste: New York (The Conrad NY | Del Posto): Last wine of the walkaround tasting for us so we were definitely pretty happy at this point. Again a bit more fruit and floral style. Some earthy. Very very young. Good wine. (4322 views)
Tasted by SlimShaney on 10/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Austerely fruity welcoming wine. Restrained fun. (3374 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 10/18/2018: Wine Spectator newbies; 10/18/2018-10/20/2018 (Marriott Marquis): This wine reminded me very much of hanging out at the barn on a spring day. There's lots of horse blanket and barnyard and saddle leather. Still a bit of a freshness to it. Almost a touch of spiciness at the end. Good wine. (3440 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/17/2018 & rated 95 points: Young, full bodied, rich and intense, the wine is loaded with dark fruit, which you can easily see in its color. There is intensity, earthyness, smoke, licorice, espresso and black cherry from start to finish. The wine is a fabulous balance between the sweet fruits, youthful character and promise of future complexities. (3464 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Tasted next to the stunning 2015. Nicely evolved, ripe, polished with good acidity. A little drying towards the finish and lacking the depth and sheer class of the 2015. Drink or keep. 90-92 (3064 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 10/28/2017 & rated 88 points: Enjoyable. (4011 views)
Tasted by DrinkBordeaux on 10/19/2017 & rated 92 points: Not as interesting as the 1998 or 2000, but held its own. Blackberry, leather, mint, and chocolate. On the palate, the tannins are firm and acidity is high. Needs time to flesh itself out and acquire better balance. Highly enjoyable and still accessible now. Better in 5 years. (3894 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
