Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 218 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hargy on 3/31/2024 & rated 90 points: the last of my bottles - fabulous bouquet and while the attack is lovely, the fruit quickly fades - needs drinking (344 views)
Tasted by MJP Hou TX on 2/1/2024: Another generous pull by a member of CDV713.

I was told this bottle was double decanted well in advance of dinner. Distinctly left bank Bordeaux.

A wonderful addition to a diversified spread. (1212 views)
(705 views)
Tasted by Sam3 on 12/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Poured and waited 1/2 an hour before drinking. Fill was to base neck. Wine was very good. Dark fruit and mineral notes. Classic Bordeaux and quite a contrast to Howell Mountain Cab that we drank at the same time. Enjoyable. (843 views)
Tasted by tbabes on 4/15/2023 & rated 94 points: The fill was into the neck and the cork sound; decanted an hour before dinner. A deep garnet core, with notes of cigar box, dried plums, leather, and black truffle. Medium bodied, good focus and grip, with fully resolved tannins on the long finish. For those who love classic Bordeaux, this is singing a lovely song at present! Lovers of modern styled Bordeaux should look elsewhere. First bottle from an OWC. (2269 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 10/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Mostly Bordeaux dinner (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Expressive youthful nose displaying ripe black fruit, cassis, blueberry, lead pencil, cedar, tobacco, a hint of oak and earth. Medium concentration, finely layered black fruit, silky, slightly lean and angular, medium acidity, earthy mineral, still noticeable tannins and a medium long ripe cassis fruit driven finish with a hint of cedar and leather at the end. This is a solid LLC that is drinking beautifully. It lacks a bit of richness in fruit. (3439 views)
(2778 views)
Tasted by Cremuel on 4/17/2022 & rated 91 points: Inky red, still youthful and almost no bricking. Massive swirls of red and black cherries, black pepper, Christmas spices, liquorice and menthol in the nose. Still youthful and very fine. Tasting opens with bright red cherries, redcurrants and fine acidity, supported by black morello cherries and peppery spices. Elegant and fine St Julien. (3370 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 2/22/2022 & rated 93 points: Purchased on release, and our last bottle, this vintage is very nostalgic for me, as it was my first LLC I ever tasted and purchased way back when and i remember it being a lovely midweight wine soon after release, and it remains such a lovely midweight wine to this day, although the complexity is much greater aromatically than back in the day. Really hard to describe, but what was once dark juicy fruits with hints of cedar is now run through with all sorts of myriad foresty scents. Some would find this a little thin or dried out, but I really enjoyed it, and especially with our meal ("Hunter's Chicken"). I always love it when wines can instantly transport me back to earlier times in my life, while simultaneously anchoring me in the present moment with such captivating aromas and tastes. That is the true magic of wine for me. (As a side note, I have always preferred this over the much more highly touted 96 vintage of LLC, so take my rating with a grain of salt ...) (3894 views)
 Tasted by platpeeps on 2/8/2022 & rated 95 points: 60 CS/ 24 Mer/ 12 CF/ 4 PV
Complex aromas reveal a shimmering structure with sweet oak and subtle fruit characters predominating. Light on its feet, it shows incredible depth and intensity with layer upon layer of different nuances and flavours. The finish is extraordinarily persistent and overall a superb wine. CHP 95 pts (2736 views)
Tasted by wineamateur on 2/6/2022: Last of a case of 12. This has had something of a reputation for being a bit stern which I do not think is deserved. Certainly this was quite open and appealing, if also classically styled.

Good colour, with bright Ruby turn into orange at the rim as one would expect at this age. Ripe, pastille tinged cassis on the nose, jumps from the glass, with cigar box and tobacco leaf; JuicyFruits bubblegum; a hint of something fungal. Fresh herbs too.

Medium weight on the palate. Nicely rounded but classically proportioned, the sweetness of the fruit balancing the refreshing acidity perfectly. Long lingering finish. Lovely and very satisfying (2251 views)
Tasted by Motz on 2/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Enjoyed over a long afternoon and evening.

Traditional Left Bank Bordeaux in all regards. Unmistakable!

Bouquet of blackcurrant extract, dried root vegetables, pepper garden, dried herbs (mint, bay, thyme), tobacco in all forms (particularly lit cigar), iodine, worn leather, dank basement, intense black earth, and minerality, including coal and iron ore. The wine tastes exactly like it smells, in perfect, harmonious balance. In this vein, this offering lists an abv of 12.5. Let me type that again, 12.5...in entirely seamless form. Acid is hanging tough, no less than medium, and tannins still rock, pun intended.

Harvesting at peak ripeness was not a consideration here. Nor was mass market appeal. This was made to represent the soul of the place, which it does in spectacular fashion. The only reason this does not deserve a higher score is because, given the vintage's base substance, it had no more to offer. I see no reason why Left Bank Bordeaux cannot and should not be made in this style.

Squarely in its drinking window. Unlikely to improve, but it should hold for several years. Wines like this are why I drink wine. Exceptional Saint-Julien! (3002 views)
Tasted by portman63 on 11/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Still showed quite deep colored with just a bit of browning at the edges. Earth and tobacco on the nose to start, giving way to showing black fruit starting at about 90 min of opening (no decant just pouring some and following a glass while the bottle got air). Still full on the palate with mostly integrated tannins, but with plenty of grip in the finish along with balancing acidity. It didn't have the lushness of top vintages, but a nice wine which paired well with duck confit and risotto. (1899 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Bordeaux and Cabs 2009 and Older (Chez Dalluge, MN): Small pour of this tonight. Every bit as good still as previous bottles, the last one tasted 12/2017. Leather, cherry, red fruits, earthy, soil, great stuff in an unappreciated vintage; often words to live by... (2996 views)
Tasted by plitton on 4/21/2021: Larry and Nancy's Bordeaux Dinner (University Club, Chicago): Pronounced legs. Closed nose. Soft mouthfeel. Palate needed more expression--too reserved. (2845 views)
Tasted by Traxx on 9/28/2020: First experience with this wine, so hard to evaluate where it's at on a curve... from magnum it was singing. Nice fruit, great acidity to balance it out, mild earthy nose. Really in a nice spot. (4654 views)
Tasted by Paco55 on 9/12/2020 & rated 92 points: Bottle opened, poured and left standing for an hour. Initial astringency blew off leaving Leather and spice on the nose. Palate is finely structured with fading fruit but overall drinking well like a classical Bordeaux. At the end of its drinking life and on the decline but pleasure still to be had. Drink up. (3829 views)
Tasted by starkravingmad on 9/8/2020 & rated 94 points: Smooth, silky. Still complete taste, flavors of cherry, vanilla.
slight gravelly texture.
Outstanding (3570 views)
Tasted by BBinSC on 8/1/2020 & rated 91 points: Fill was fairly low on the neck - this bottle seems past peak a bit. Still lovely, earthy, fruit fading however. May have just been this bottle, but at 26 years it's time to start drinking up. (3252 views)
Tasted by Rugan on 7/23/2020 & rated 92 points: Still going strong. structured, interesting, still some fruit. long after taste with lots of nuances. (2957 views)
Tasted by hargy on 5/30/2020 & rated 90 points: drunk alongside the 1988 and while it did not have the complexity or the length of the 1988, it was a lovely wine nonetheless - needs drinking though (2584 views)
Tasted by levinml on 3/20/2020 & rated 90 points: A little disappointing. Kind of thin, good taste, but probably a better dinner wine than something to drink alone. Drank over two nights and about the same both evenings. (2639 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/20/2020 & rated 92 points: Richer, darker than the others, hint of cacoa, herbs, biger, softer, big tannins, good acidity, shrooms, really nice on the palate, good structure despite vintage (nose was a little weaker IMO). Very nice, very solid, still going strong. Lawry's Dirty Dozen Blind. (2928 views)
Tasted by ANWW89 on 12/30/2019 & rated 90 points: at peak. Improved with some air. fruit still present though tertiary flavours dominate. tannins still strong giving it good structure. Regal wine. A few more years at this level. (3020 views)
Tasted by Sievvy on 12/24/2019 & rated 90 points: Just OK. I expect more from LLC. Tobacco notes, earthy undertones. Good viscosity and decent finish. (3062 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Julien

VdB

Read more detailed information on St. Julien and its wines The seventeenth century pioneers Traces are to be found of a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, perhaps Saint-Julien's earliest name, as from the thirteenth century. But we have to wait until the seventeenth century pioneers, urban and rural aristocrats, discover the exceptional merits of these terroirs.
Traces of this system still exist today in the structure of estates within the appellation: by the side of the two villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, the large estates are heavily preponderant, representing more than four fifths of the total surface of vineyards.

The terrain is practically identical over all the commune. Only the proximity of the estuary, sometimes close, sometimes further away, can cause slight variations in climate. In fact, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle's layer of gravel takes the form of a huge rectangle over 3 miles long and 2 miles wide. And the alluvial deposits are particularly well fragmented into ridges of Garonne gravel of the early Quaternary. Accordingly, the vines are safeguarded from stagnant water.

The wines from the Saint-Julien appellation may be recognized by their unparalleled bouquet, particularly harmonious and mild. They have a fine deep colour and combine the finesse of their aromas and a solid constitution. They have body, are very rich in flavour and have a delicious and delicate bouquet.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Saint-Julien appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Saint-Julien and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cussac, and Saint-Laurent, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
