Tasted by Larre on 3/30/2024 & rated 95 points: With two hours of air – wow! (1182 views)
Tasted by Andrew Vaughan on 3/29/2024 flawed bottle: Unfortunately brett infected which is clearly a flaw, rendering deeply disappointing what underneath you can tell is good juice (1240 views)
Tasted by Frontal on 3/14/2024 & rated 96 points: Veaiment de toute beauté en ce moment. Pas de signe de déclin (1691 views)
Tasted by Golf_Wine on 3/9/2024 & rated 94 points: Wowser. This is a very good wine. A bit of secondary fermentation that fades away. Red fruit extravaganza. A rich wine, lots of depth but always being dominated by the red strawberry and raspberry, no mistaken how much Grenache went in to this. This is a very smooth and fresh/young wine, I don’t know if this wine will mature vs the red fruits fading away but would guess this have an easy 10 years ahead of it. Went exceptionally well with Korean bbq. Got better over 1.5 hours but would not decant, I liked the exploration as it evolved in the glass. (1754 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 3/1/2024 & rated 93 points: Quite alot of that Pegau funk. Fruit holding up quite well. Really a delight to drink (2069 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 2/25/2024: Tasted over 2 hrs
-dark red minimal clearing
-expressive fig spicecake black olive licorice molasses vinyl sous bois
-med acidity, med/med+ weight ripe fig spicecake black olive sitting on a bed of dusty earth, a little bit of heat appears with the med/med+ chalky tannins
-great complexity, this is drinking beautifully now on its mature plateau, better than a bottle tasted just a few months ago (2041 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 2/17/2024: Magnum, great Cdp from a great vintage, rich & full bodied but the balance allows for easy drinking (2089 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/10/2024: ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): As has been the case with many bottles of this, there is definitely some slight re-fermentation happening. The group was particularly displeased with this. That said, I have always found this to blow off. The palate is unreal, white pepper, wonderful elements of grilled plum, so sharp, spicy, intense and tannic. Day 2, all of the CO2 is long gone and what remains is intensely spicy, tannic, loaded with garrigue, plum and pepper. Just insanely pure, primary (at 15 years?!?) and intense. (2715 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 2/7/2024 & rated 94 points: Guest somm with a work colleague for the evening - supplied wine from our cellars for a work dinner (Pro Bono, Palo Alto CA): From my cellar, first bottles of this vintage of Pegau for me...Last wine of the evening. Bottles had been decanted and rebottled 3 hours prior.

Dark and brooding garnet color. Nose showing ripe dark fruit, savory notes, garrigue. Palate of black cherry, tobacco, leather, herbs. Concentrated and rich through the mid palate. Tannins present but sweetened. Full body and long finish.

Great showing on this might, drinking younger than I would have expected. Well stored bottles should go for another 10-15 years...my #2 for the evening. (1881 views)
Tasted by VindependenceDay on 2/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Left in glass for two hours before drinking. Big nose of raspberry, tar, smoke, and barnyard. In the mouth very smooth- tannins and acidity present enough to go well with pepperoni and mushroom pizza, but muted enough to make for very pleasant sippinh even without food. It seems like it’s still on the upswing but ready to go now.

Just to add as I continue to drink this…it has a very lively quality, almost fizzy (but not actually fizzy). It doesn’t have that heavy, syrupy quality that southern Rhône’s sometimes have. Also, the barnyard is quite pronounced, but interesting. It’s not off-putting. Adds character. (2198 views)
Tasted by Chaswinesnob on 1/14/2024 & rated 94 points: this my last bottle of the 09. really like this producer. after one hour of opening it was phenominal. The fruit was a nice plum/raisiny with no tannins. as i was having dinner of mild peppers, onions, sausage and pasta (no red sauce) the wine became more mild and lost some flavor. not sure what happened. for thiose of you that have this wine there is no reason to wait (2639 views)
Tasted by Lehto on 12/24/2023 & rated 92 points: First a disclaimer; this is really not my type of wine and I will never get super excited about this, but I can appreciate the complexity of this wine.

Seems it's in a good window right now as there's still a nice touch of fruit left in it and the tannins were, for my personal taste, quite grippy but got better with some air.

Blackberry, chokeberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry and plum provided some fruit, but then came the licorice, leather, black tea, scorched earth, tar, tobacco leaves and hung meat.

Good acidity and tannins weren't completely overpowering, but I personally just prefer lighter and more elegant reds. (2508 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 12/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Chateauneuf du pape tasting (at my home): Appearance: The wine is a deep purple color with a garnet rim.
Image of 2009 Domaine du Pégau ChâteauneufduPape Cuvée RéservéeOpens in a new window

Nose: The nose is intense and complex, with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, plums, raspberries, licorice, tobacco, leather, and spice.

Palate: The palate is full-bodied and rich, with flavors of ripe fruit, spice, and earth. The tannins are well-integrated and give the wine a structured finish.

Drinking window: The wine is ready to drink now, but it will continue to improve for 15-20 years. (2740 views)
Tasted by Porco do vinho on 12/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Yummy. Still tasting young with fresh red fruit. Nice acidity (2493 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 12/11/2023 & rated 96 points: Y'all know how much I love this funky jewel. Nothing has changed. Its wowingly French and still delicious, healthy, and throbbing long on each sip and swallow. This is now at full maturity with lots of love to share. Its like hiding behind a jasmin bush, and then being teased by a scent you cant place, and then realizing you have cow shit on the bottom of your shoe. Dont miss it! Drink (2880 views)
Tasted by admid on 12/6/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted 4h prior to a tasting dinner.

Garnet color with some sediment.

Nose was with lot of dark fruits and minerals with hints of flowers.
Good maturity with good structure and balance.

Good length and multi-layered finish.

For next round I would give it more air, but overall a great experience with lamb. (2555 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 11/15/2023: Tasted over 2 hrs
-densely colored med dark red faint purple minimal clearing
-fragrant almost heady iodine vinyl licorice tar plum kirsch
-med acidity, med+ weight expansive spicy iodine earthy saline kirsch faint port-like element, med/med+ tannins
-densely packed with a lot of savory complexity (3058 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 10/21/2023 & rated 95 points: This Cuvee is always one of the best CdP in the upper segment and it remains attractively priced vs the da Capo and other Cult bottlings. Lighter than most CDP with red fruit, some brett, leather, tobacco. (3677 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 10/5/2023 & rated 93 points: Double decanted around noon and taken to a tasting dinner. Lots of sediment. Nearly opaque garnet color. Nose initially is very scorched earth and mineral oriented with just hints of florals and dark fruit. Very tense and closed with bright acidity. Surprisingly more red fruited than black initially and with a slightly bitter edge on the otherwise long and layered finish. Needs aeration.
This didn't quite live up to my expectations, the group was split on it and I felt it should have shown better than it did with both the steak and the pork tenderloin dishes it was served with. 94-->93 (3786 views)
Tasted by Blauweiss on 9/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Warm feeling on nose and palate. Plenty of stables on the nose, bretty. Great palate, rich, complex and broad. In a great spot now! (3313 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 9/10/2023 & rated 94 points: Where do you go when you want some to sniff a horse shit tinged jasmine patch out of a glass all night long in the warm summer air? 2009 Pegau is where! Still has that lovely cow paddy pie vibe in a field of Jasmines. Really lovely and oh so French...Not to be held too long, can’t get better from here. Drink (3695 views)
Tasted by wa2ofd on 9/8/2023: Barnyard classic nose. A bit more rustic than the Usseglio we drank alongside. Classic chateauneuf! (3098 views)
Tasted by markcic on 9/3/2023 & rated 93 points: Better than the bottle I had a few months back. Opened two hours prior to dinner The nose is all red fruit. The palate is cherry, raspberry, plum, grilled meat and a touch of spice. The finish is on the long side making it a very enjoyable bottle of CdP. Drank at my clubs Labor Day dinner along with a plate of pulled pork, smoked brisket and barbequed salmon. (3156 views)
Tasted by Édifice on 9/2/2023 & rated 95 points: A bit of funk initially, with some time evolving to a fantastic bouquet of ripe raspberries, cola, spices and minerals. Bright and sweet palate, slightly extreme yet very interesting, leading to a long finish with some spices, minerals. Very interesting and drinkable wine. (2872 views)
Tasted by shutto1992@gmail.com on 8/20/2023 & rated 98 points: Love it (3240 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
