Community Tasting Notes (average 95 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 163 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by G_H on 3/29/2023 & rated 94 points: Interestingly this felt much younger and in need of more time than the approachable and sexy 2013 next to it. Similar to the 2010 bordeaux, I feel that the best 2008 Napa just need substantially more time than the 2007s or even the 2013s.

Could potentially develop into a giant with enough time (1315 views)
Tasted by TheDKALife on 11/30/2022 & rated 96 points: Feminine notes. Especially compared to the 18 Beringer. The texture it was jumped out to me first. Loved it. Pure velvet with a bold punch and long lasting spice finish. The wine fell off about 45 mins after arriving. Jim picked up on that fast, I noticed it about an hour later, but I have a much more novice pallet. Agree this is a great PnP wine. (1362 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 11/30/2022 & rated 95 points: Decanted 30 min and enjoyed over the next 2-3 hours. First hour this is a beauty. Soft, feminine mouth feel. Red fruited. Just a hint of aged fruit on the nose and palate. Hard to peg as a Materium at first, due to the aging. Tends toward red, but not stewed, plum. Younger vintages can easily be picked out of a lineup by our group. This is very well integrated on all fronts, no harsh edges. About 90 min in, it seems to drop off a bit and weaken, but another hour of air and it seems stronger, again? Weird. But good. Glad to have this aged one to compare against all our modern, younger vintages, between the 3 of us.......a learning lesson! (2804 views)
Tasted by Mdb1982 on 9/26/2022 & rated 97 points: Fantastic wine. A lot of sediment, last glass struggled to filter and was very cloudy. Great dark fruit flavor and incredible aroma from the glass. Wish I had more. (1611 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 7/29/2022 & rated 94 points: Blind, decanted. Powerful, inky dark fruit with cassis and silky tannins. 94 (1738 views)
Tasted by andolini on 5/30/2022 & rated 97 points: Popped and poured, drank over the course of two hours. Dark purple, pure cabernet, still youthful without any rough edges. Pure, dark red/blue fruit, vanilla richness and creaminess. Seamless finish. Truly enjoyable. (1323 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 4/26/2022 & rated 95 points: WOTN: Blinded, I would say this is a 2009 first growth. Drops mic. (1387 views)
Tasted by Jzboxtas on 4/19/2022 & rated 96 points: Incredible. Finish lasts for almost a minute. (1330 views)
Tasted by KenK on 4/4/2021 & rated 95 points: This was everything I hoped it would be. Dark ripe rich intense red and black berry fruited core with a tremendous supple texture. Balanced by sweet tannins and acid and features some good complexity too. Highly drinkable now and quite tasty for both the casual wine drinker and the enthusiast. This one simply aims to please.  Tasted by cadamson on 12/24/2020: First in nearly ten years. Quite large in stature, big wine, though delicious. Great sitting around a fire... (2213 views)
Tasted by edwardochu on 10/31/2020 & rated 92 points: soft tannin, very harmonious, decanted for around 90mins. i don't think it is showing its best at this stage. would wait 5+ years to try the next btl (2265 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 9/5/2020 & rated 94 points: This is for my 8/21-22 tasting. Consistent with my May and early August 2020 notes. (2196 views)

Tasted by Myman24 on 8/2/2020 & rated 97 points: Very nice! Decanted for about 2h. Amazing soft tannins at first with notes of blue and black fruits, cassis and a hint of graphite. Very elegant and feminine! (2288 views)
Tasted by gharter on 7/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Decanted an hour. Been a while since I opened one, what a treat! Gorgeous nose with balckberry, anise, chocolate and cedar. Loaded with flavor with blackberry, cassis, and chocolate, spice and cedar. Medium bodied with silky smooth tannns in the finish. If not at its peak, very close. (1715 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 5/18/2020 & rated 95 points: 100% cab from Weitz Vineyard by Thomas Brown. 14.8% ABV. I let it breathe for 1.5 hrs. Drank over 2. Agree with Andolini below: A pure, smooth cab, juicy and mildly sweet. Floral notes. Medium weight to me even if I see a lot of notes about it being full bodied. A pleasure to drink. (1735 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 5/18/2019 & rated 92 points: It's big. It's forward, with macerated ripe blackberries & cherries. Vanilla, spice, graphite/charcoal, and anise are all there too. Full on the palate, but with enough ripe tannin still there to help the acid support the broad frame. A touch of heat in the mid palate detracts. But overall it's a nicely layered example of this large style. (2927 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 3/30/2019 & rated 95 points: Wonderful layered dark blackberry, cassis, and chocolate notes on the nose and palate with tasty acidity and resolving tannins on the long finish. (2680 views)
Tasted by Quiet Lion on 3/19/2019 & rated 97 points: Decanted and served. At first like drinking a liquid purple leather armchair. Leather, loamy earth and dark fruit dominated. With air black and blue fruit blossomed on the palate. Unfortunately the bottle had brett, which bloomed after 90 minutes and interfered with enjoyment of the last of it. Rating of course is before the brett bloomed. Beautiful wine. (2975 views)
Tasted by Chrisinroch on 12/28/2018: Pnp. Open almost immediately. It's a big wine, with generous fruit tempered by a bit of savory. Tannins are melding nicely but plenty of years ahead. Really nice wine that will appeal to a wide range of wine drinkers. Same or better on day 2 (2881 views)
Tasted by andolini on 10/15/2018 & rated 95 points: Opened and decanted for four hours before first sip. A bit muted on the nose, but pure, smooth cabernet on palate. Juicy and mildly sweet, but not over the top or jammy. Mainly red/blue fruit profile, but I did not pick up many secondary characteristics. This was very balanced without overt alcohol or oak. Long finish. Very enjoyable. (3041 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 3/14/2018 & rated 93 points: I agree with the note below from my Albany dining companion kenv below. Opened and decanted. First sip at 2.5 hours after decanting. A very smooth wine. Wow. After 3 hours, I was tasting a bit of a tang, which I didn't care for. This was the last of 3 bottles, and the lowest rated. You can hold onto to this wine. (3565 views)
Tasted by kenv on 3/14/2018: Dinner with Dan H (Provence Restaurant, Albany, NY): [Decanted for 2 hours at the restaurant.] Even after the Hermitage and Emidio Pepe, this is HUGE. A monster of a wine. Tons of chocolate, vanilla, and red and black fruit. Tastes like some creme de cacao was added. Needs many years to soften and mellow. Overpowering at this point. 93-??
Day 3 (open with the cork back in for about 72 hours): Cherry chocolate brandy nose. Thick, hot, lush chocolate and cherries. Very impressive, but too much oak and alcohol for me. (3459 views)
Tasted by WineGold on 12/9/2017 & rated 97 points: Extraordinary. Unfolds and unfurls with layer after beautiful layer of red, then blue, then black fruit. Balanced by earth and tannin. Just gorgeous. Brought to dinner out. Client says it’s one of the top 5 wines he’s had in his life. Amen. (3351 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
