Tasted by MJR Marin on 11/24/2021 & rated 91 points: Identified in a blind tasting as Soldera
Expressed Italian acidity
A bit getting past prime I fear
A bit vintage challenged perhaps
Drank over 2 hours and really never showed
A pretty but somewhat An incomplete wine for Soldera (1572 views)
Tasted by Ms. Bubblehead on 8/5/2018: The nose shows roses, smoke, violet and modest earthiness. On palate, richer than other vintages on fruits, sour cherry, plum, and a touch of blackberries. After 2 hours, various spices were shown on the palate too, with some underlying minerality. This vintage was produced from the blend of Case Basse and Intistieti plots. (3377 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 8/2/2018 & rated 93 points: The most burgundian wine in tonight’s line up. Sweet red currant, raspberry, cinnamon and perfume. Palate was less dense than the 98 and 99 but the backbone of Soldera was obvious. The wine just kept developing more layers with more time in the glass. Very good. (3079 views)
Tasted by Seth Rosenberg on 5/25/2018 & rated 95 points: Ripe and slightly roasted blue and blue-red fruits: some blueberry, marzipan, some VA I think, coffee. This has nice depth and a creaminess. The palate has good acid, quite bright to go with the velvety texture and flavors. Some fresher blue fruits and some coffee come out when trilled. This has excellent reserves and depth. Some sweet marzipan on the finish as well. I didn't enjoy this last night - glad I took the leftovers home to give it another shot. Thanks Jay! Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20. (3571 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 5/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Epure blind. I liked this more than crowd. Bright, floral and baking spice aromatics. Good acidity on palate. (3071 views)
Tasted by beej on 1/20/2018: Accompanied duck and bucatini, yummy.
Wine began tight and closed.
Opened up spectacularly over many hours w/out decanting.
Nose showed ludens and an aged colour of slightest hint of tinge.
Bing cherries, slate and burnt duck bacon on a full rich palate.
Went thru a somewhat dead period only to hit its stride by evening’s end.
Onto the next 12 bottles. (2215 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 11/16/2016 & rated 93 points: Took 3 hours to open it. Very floral with mixed berries, flowers, soil and chocolate. The sweetness is so alluring with good weight. Still ridiculously young. (2256 views)
Tasted by burgburgburg on 6/6/2016 & rated 93 points: Decanted half bottle. Drink upon uncorked. Blossoming aroma in around an hour. Flamboyant fruits and tannin. It's just like an energetic dancer on your tongue. We found the wines from the bottle are better than the decanter. It's not the best Soldera I've ever tried but it's superb in many ways. Very ready now. What a beauty! (2304 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 6/3/2016 & rated 95 points: Decades of Decadence - x6s (Tetsuya's, Sydney, Australia): Pencil, cherry, earth, licorice, blood/iron and perfumed turkish delight. Superb detail, the tannins give it impressive structure but it all feels so beautifully proportioned. Immense wine that has really come into its own since I tried it around 7 years ago where I really really liked it but wasn't blown away. (2495 views)
Tasted by reichken on 5/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Pretty much clear lightship purple , a nose of slightly dried fruits and earth, this smelled the oldest of the 96's tonight, in the mouth a silky riff of smooth tannins, dried fruity flowers and a bit of tarry earth. Great balance but bottle didn't seem 100%. (2252 views)
Tasted by lesz on 1/3/2015 flawed bottle: unfortunately corked. (2892 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 11/13/2014 & rated 96 points: The ’96 Soldera Riserva was a perfect, seamless wine with depths which seemed almost unreachable. It was one of those experiences where the wine seemed to change each time you put the glass to your nose. It was beautifully expressive with dark berry, earth and undergrowth up front. The bouquet then turned to dried flowers, tree bark and exotic spice. On the palate, it was youthful and dark, yet a zing of acidity kept it lively and fun to drink. Notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, earth and spice formed on the palate and carried through the finish as the mouth began to water, accentuating the flavors. It’s a dark beauty of a Brunello. (3079 views)
 Tasted by JJB007 on 8/20/2014 & rated 89 points: a bit light (2649 views)
Tasted by liber on 9/2/2013 & rated 93 points: Last bottle from six pack, good notes post 2008, excellent fill, deep, bright red, still almost purple on rim, classy nose of black cherry, game, liquorice, full, long, persistent and surprisingly complex for a weak vintage, ready, but with guts and grip to improve, bodes well for 97s and 99s. Fine plus (18/20). (3023 views)
Tasted by bon vivant on 6/20/2012 & rated 88 points: This was rather disappointing at boys weekend as it never seemed to come alive even after a long decant. Very dark and concentrated -maybe it will be better if it develops some good secondary flavors but this may be wishful thinking. Drinkable but when considering the producer and price it leaves me wishing for much more. (3881 views)
Tasted by Longboarder on 6/17/2012 & rated 90 points: Not a great Soldera but very pleasant to drink. Color was a little more advanced than I would have expected. This wine had been in my cellar since release. Nice nose of red fruit, spice, and balsamic. Plenty of fruit remained but the acidity was a little out of balance for the fruit. Shorter finish. If you have them drink them. (3875 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 10/20/2009 & rated 92 points: Cedar, earthy, licorice and spice on the nose. Very dry and savoury on the palate with excellent balance. (3548 views)
Tasted by andrewbarbera on 10/2/2007 & rated 92 points: this one needs a few more years down, huge nose, great color, palet is very smokey earthey and suprising, finish leaves quickly. (3640 views)
Tasted by cortoncharlie on 11/2/2006 & rated 91 points: Lovely nose - soy, berries, game and roast meats. A medium bodied wine with good sweetness and fruit reflecting the vintage. Very pleasant but a bit simple although it did evolve in the glass. Definitely ready to drink now but needs aeration. (3209 views)
Tasted by futronic on 3/5/2005 & rated 87 points: Medium-ruby colour to an oranging rim. Aromas of cherry, earth, mushrooms, barnyard. Medium bodied, biting tannins, with notes of cherry, spice, and earth. Moderate finish, 25-30s. Try again in a few years. (2723 views)
Tasted by Hank Gillespie on 5/26/2004: Vertical tasting of Soldera Case Basse Brunello Riservas: Very bright - clear - vigorous medium dark ruby colour; aromas beginning to develop nicely, with dark berry fruit - blackberry mostly - some smoke - and a few notes at the end of fresh celery, which was actually quite pleasing; on the palate starts out with some tangy berry fruit, which softens up - again blackberry, but the initial thrust suggested chokecherry; quite round and rich tasting, but finishes somewhat shorter than the other wines, albeit with good fruit and texture.
This wine showed well later accompanying some Italian cheeses. (5520 views)

Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse)

Producer Website

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
