Tasted by cgoumas on 2/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Amazing Opened 10 wines from all over the world…winner winner winner. Beautiful (573 views)
Tasted by Guido L. on 3/8/2022 & rated 93 points: After the last 2 disappointing bottles, this was great again. (1117 views)
Tasted by timothynbond on 10/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Deep purple core with some notable bricking at the rim. Nose of tobacco, candied fruit, vanilla, and some barnyard. Medium body with medium acid and some really pleasant velvety tannins. Red raspberries and blueberries on the palate. Really well-balanced and a great accompaniment for some reverse seared ribeye. In a great place right now. (1396 views)
Tasted by Guido L. on 8/23/2020 & rated 90 points: Again very ripe on the nose with a hint of port. Not the best bottle. (1976 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 3/26/2020 & rated 93 points: So melancholy tonight. I love older wine. No where can you find such unique and distinct flavors .... no where else !

Fruit, acidity and tannin in great balance again. Aside from that, this wine reminds me of my last tasting notes. (2157 views)
Tasted by bubucap on 1/17/2020 & rated 77 points: Flawed (1754 views)
Tasted by Guido L. on 9/20/2019 & rated 92 points: - Brick color - Not the best bottle. On the nose already very ripe. Probably not best storage? (1775 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 4/26/2019 & rated 94 points: 2nd night. Simply put ..... great. Let sit at room temperature for 2 hours and man did this settle down. I urge any fan to sit on these wines for several more years. It is so much more tonight than last night. More Bordeaux like than Italian.

Tobacco, lead pencil dominate. Sorry for the analogy to French wine but my nose is the most memorable to that memory. This is a lovely wine where ch is better tonight than last. (1707 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 4/25/2019 & rated 92 points: What a nose. I get an herbaceous, smokey cedarwood, and tobacco combo. Total left bank French but then I look and it says ITALY ! Wow is this some good stuff.

On the palette the acidity is dominant to the point where I hope the fruit can remain given this balance. Mid palette and finish is totally dominated by acidity. I want to believe that this wine is still just a puppy given the color. Color is deep dark with no signs of fading.

I am going to let this sit overnight. For tonight 92 and fingers crossed (1309 views)
Tasted by sababa1022 on 1/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Drinking spectacularly! No rush. (1270 views)

My #5, Group's #4 (44 pts). Part of a Super Tuscan tasting. Tasted blind. (1660 views)
Tasted by FPLopes on 12/19/2017 & rated 80 points: I still had 3 bottles of this vintage. opened 2 and they were both way passed. i suggest trying/consuming this vintage really fast. I was amazed how fast it derailed. last year I consumed the first 3 bottles of the same 1/2 case and they were amazing. fast forward one year, and the second half is bad. (1605 views)
Tasted by wculpepper on 10/30/2017 & rated 93 points: Good fill and cork. Decanted three hours; heavy sediment. Opaque purple color. Blackberry, leather and vanilla on the nose. Rich, full-bodied dark fruit on the palate with ample acids and light tannins. The finish is quite long and pleasing. It’s not going to get any better, but I’m betting it will still be drinking nicely for several more years. (1740 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Rich and ripe with resolved tannins. There are prunes, tobacco, earth and plums on the nose and palate. This is drinking at peak. No need to wait. (1995 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 6/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Rich and ripe with an interesting nose. Tannins are fully resolved, and fruit remains, with interesting earth and tobacco flavors. A bit flabby int he middle, which prevents it from being outstanding, but very pleasurable to drink. (2773 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 5/13/2016 & rated 94 points: Still dark, classic Bordeaux, very floral bouquet, delicious, complex, powerful with a nimble touch, classy, so good, chew & ponder type of wine, complex and long finish, similar to a top poyferre vintage, this wine has at least 10 years left, we all loved this and voted it WOTN until we popped the 2011 Hubert lignier gevrey chambertin Perriere

Tasted by buckeye76 on 9/11/2015 & rated 94 points: BLACKBERRIES, LICORICE, COFFEE, AND SOME EARTNINESS. RICH FRUIT, NICE COMPLEXITY, AND A LONG FINISH. (1862 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 12/6/2014 & rated 90 points: 60% Cabernet 49% Merlot. Ripe, rich, long, but on one glossy note right now - no complexity or subtlety. Time will tell, but I wonder where this will go. (3322 views)
Tasted by Jamie Manley on 11/15/2014 & rated 95 points: Had the 2001 of this at a tasting recently and was wildly impressed, so I snagged some 99, 00, and all that I could find of the 01. Based on this 2000, the 99s and 01s will spend some more time sleeping. This wine is spectacular. Deep ruby color with no sign of fading at all. The nose explodes with aromas of leather, licorice, earth, tar, espresso, and toasted oak. Incredibly rich palate with all of the above, plus plum, wet leaves, and tea. Man, I really enjoyed this! Sorted tannins and a very long finish. I am loving this Italian producer...95 Pts (3720 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/11/2014: Regular dinner group (@ EM): Chocolate, tea and celery in the bouquet. On the palate the same. Some sweetness, cocoa, powdery tannin. Still enjoyable, but this bottle is past its prime. No score. (3146 views)
Tasted by FLI on 7/30/2014 & rated 92 points: Rich and well balanced. Tannins mellow. A very pleasing bottle. (2825 views)
Tasted by ipp on 3/16/2014 & rated 94 points: Blind tasting of five 95+ RP cab/cab blends. The bottles were double decanted 5 hours before drinking.

This is such a well make Tuscan beauty. It starts of with a wonderful herbaceous nose. On the palate, you get so many tastes of Tuscany (dried herbs, truffles, anise and dark berries). Good balance. Finishes long. Well done. (3118 views)
Tasted by Venexian on 11/8/2013 & rated 91 points: Impressiona per gioventù.
Tasted by hfindlay on 7/26/2013: Delicious, full-bodied red with lots of really nice earthy notes. Great with meat lasagne. (2871 views)
Tasted by godx on 3/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Alvin's Lunch - March 2013 (Le Gavroche): Tasted blind – Nose here was very nice from the get-go with rich dark fruit, smoke and hints of leather and green tobacco that had me thinking Syrah or Merlot. On the palate this was smooth and charming with solid acidity and well-balanced tannins. This was really nice and made the previous two wines seem rather modern. As good as this was today, I’d hold these for a few more years. Excellent. 91+ (3332 views)

Tua Rita

Producer Website
Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)

Tua Rita was founded in 1984 by Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti near Suvereto in the Alto Maremma just a few miles from the Tuscan coast. While several other Super Tuscan producers had begun cultivating international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah further north near Bolgheri, Tua Rita was the first to pursue them further south closer to Livorno. Launching their first high end wine in 1992 (the Giusto di Notri Bordeaux blend), the winery received immediate recognition and experienced meteoric growth over the next several years, culminating in their 2000 Redigaffi (100% Merlot) becoming the first Italian wine ever to receive a 100-point score from Robert Parker. Tua Rita is one of Italy’s most exceptional craft winemakers, and the standard-bearer for the now dozens of wineries that have come to populate the surrounding region.

Tua Rita is located in the Alto Maremma, between the Tyrrhenian sea and the metalliferous hills known as the Val di Cornia. Today, the estate has 35 hectares under vine at an average elevation of 100 metres above sea level. The vines are planted at a density of 8-9,000 vines per hectare on silt and clay soil, a unique terroir which yields an unmistakable style to the wines — aromatically distinguished by iron-like nuances and an impressive, intensely savoury progression in the mouth along with a distinctive saline character.

Vineyard management and winemaking have been handled since early on by the esteemed Luca D’Attoma, while Rita and Virgilio’s son-in-law Stefano Frascolla is active in the cellar and manages the business operations.

Fruit from the scrupulously managed vineyards is cosseted by non-intrusive cellar protocols, restrained cask conditioning and rigorous attention for the environment, with yields kept to a minimum to ensure concentration of flavors. During the harvest, the bunches are chosen and destemmed, and then the individual grapes are selected by hand. They are then sent to temperature-controlled truncated conical vats, where they undergo traditional fermentation for 25 to 30 days, with alternating pump-over and punch-down operations. After vinification is complete, the wine is lightly pressed, after which it falls directly into barriques located in the room under the cellar. It is here that the wine, having completed malolactic fermentation, will mature in oak for at least eighteen months.

Tua Rita produces the following wines: Redigaffi (100% Merlot), Syrah (100% Syrah), Giusto di Notri (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc), Perlato del Bosco (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon), and a “second vin” Rosso di Notri, obtained from a blend of all the red-berried varieties grown on the estate.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Giusto di Notri

(Via Italian Wine Merchants) The Maremma was still sparse when Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti purchased their estate in 1984 and chose to plant Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, varietals that do well in Maremma soils rich in clay and silt. Those initial plantings (totaling 7.5 acres) became the source for the now revered Tua Rita Super Tuscans. Tua Rita found critical success early with their 1990s vintages of their flagship Bordeaux-style blend Giusto di Notri and their acclaimed Merlot Redigaffi, which in 1997 received a 100-point rating and made Tua Rita an international sensation. Tua Rita has remained true to its artisanal ideals and to its modest demeanor, most notably visible in the warm, grandmotherly persona of owner Rita Tua. Bearing the signature of Tua Rita’s famed consulting enologist, Stefano Chioccioli, the estate’s current comprehensive portfolio continues to electrify wine cognoscenti.

More than just the name of a winery, Rita Tua is herself a real person, a thick, heavy, dominant, strong woman. She’s both of the earth and from it, and like the earth, she is nurturing and she is comforting. She would be the person you'd want to help you lift a car to change a tire when you're missing a jack, bail hay before the rain sets in, stir a pot of pasta to feed an army, or simply give a hug that will put you back on your feet. Her strength and power are her dominant features. But her natural spirit that can soothe, comfort and heal is never far away.

Just as “Rita” does to her family, the wines from Tua Rita wrap you in a warm, strong embrace. It is, actually, their dominant feature. But as big and powerful as they may be, they also have a natural beauty that comforts you from the inside and gives you this feeling of invincibility and heat. The wines of 2008 in particular are rich in these characteristics—powerfully delicious, ripe with fruit, and robust, the ’08 releases of Tua Rita are delights to drink. The red and black fruit of all-Merlot Redigaffi hits you like a bolt of sunshine; the sensual Giustro di Notri exhibits structure and velvety tannins; the cassis-driven Perlato del Bosco shows unparalleled purity and finesse; and the Syrah is a seductive, dark stranger with plenty of muscle.
