Community Tasting Notes (average 94.7 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 90 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by waspencer on 1/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened up, no decant for about an hour. This wine was singing- still tons of fruit and well rounded. Tasted like a wine half its age. Still has some time left, no rush to open. (1872 views)
Tasted by shawnhill on 10/24/2021 & rated 95 points: Opened up nicely after an hour in the decanter. Plenty of fruit left (1808 views)
Tasted by srkool on 4/13/2020 & rated 89 points: Wine had color and nose of age...actually not sure if it was just aged or if it was that some air may have slipped into the bottle. Cork broke in half when removing and it appeared a bit dry. So its possibe that it did not maintain a tight seal. Nevertheless the bottle was still drinkable but not what I expected. Taste was one of smoke and slight ash and not of fruit like some of the previous tasting notes. Disappointed with this bottle. (2767 views)
Tasted by Kevnzworld on 8/20/2018 & rated 93 points: Herbie green nose
The alcohol is a little hot on the palate for me. Flavors of prune and spice., a little too stewed or over extracted for my taste.
Drank with a 2004 Shafer HS I enjoyed a little more (3927 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 8/19/2018 & rated 92 points: My least favorite wine of the night, but largely because this was the worst vintage year of the wines we had. Too much alcohol comes through and the fruit is disjointed until after mid palate, but then it starts to come together for a finish that is a bit too short. Perhaps also an awkward time in its development, but the '03s are not an easy group to predict. (1466 views)
Tasted by Herb K on 4/27/2018: Perfection. Aged balanced. Still has s long way to go! (3657 views)
Tasted by Bobbusch on 1/27/2018 & rated 97 points: Decanted for an hour. This wine was amazing! Very well balanced. The fruit is still humming. Just an incredible wine to enjoy. (3430 views)
Tasted by carman on 1/10/2018 & rated 100 points: Wine was fabulous (3561 views)
Tasted by ipp on 10/21/2017 & rated 99 points: One of the best bottles that I have had in the past few years. Full-bodied, very well balanced cab. Huge flavors here ... licorice, smoke and dark berry. Great finish. This was my last bottle of the 2003. (3310 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 6/4/2017 & rated 98 points: Incredible dinner wines with friends (Screagle, Krug, Yquem, Bryant, +++) (Our home): Very nice showing for this. Unique. It was still getting better when the glass was empty. Purple in color. The nose is great with cassis, licorice, slight spice and bits of charred wood. There is a bit of alcohol as well but more like a liqueur than hot. On the palate, this seems a bit sweet (but that my be from coming next to the older Dominus). Lots of cassis. No hint of alcohol. Very clean. A wonderful seamless texture and balance. Drinking with just the slightest bit of age. Medium tannins. Long finish. (4168 views)
Tasted by Bluefisher on 4/16/2017 & rated 90 points: Clearly exceptionally well made, but just too over-extracted for my palate. Thick and syrupy. Prefer more elegance. (2634 views)
Tasted by silverburst on 1/28/2017 & rated 95 points: Crimson red color, pristine edges no browning or fading noticed. Upon opening, the smell of dark fruit was apparent but the first taste had zero fruit, wood was only coming thru. After 90 min decant, the beauty of this wine started to show. Very balanced wine, nice show of fruit, with a velvety 30 sec finish.

Day 2- left half a glass in the decanter to investigate, alcohol dominance nose, very tasty, finish diminished. Open the next one in 2 years? (2633 views)
Tasted by chrs on 1/25/2017 & rated 96 points: Truly awesome. Opened and drank it straight. It hits you like a sledge hammer! Maybe it would benefit to open for an hour or so. This puppy has power, body, a deep color and lingers on your palate. It was great to see it evolve over 2 hours during a CNY hot pot reunion dinner. Strong black fruit yes but liquorice too and spices evolving. At 15.9% it is very well balanced. For some around the table it was too strong and too in your face. But we loved it. Ended the last glass with apiece of 72% dark chocolate. Yummy with this wine. I'll revisit my next bottle in 5 years? (2529 views)
Tasted by jerbearjb on 9/9/2016 & rated 95 points: Pure, pure napa fruit with miles of depth and a loong finish. Actually started to fade a bit after two hours open. (2740 views)
Tasted by WineWright on 5/14/2016 & rated 95 points: Superlative experience in every way. This Beauty has years ahead of it but if you are holding multiple bottles I recommend trying soon. Just Fabulous. I'm calling it a "Hundred Thousand Acre" wine. Brace yourself, my friends, and hold on, because Kayli Morgan will rock your world. (2732 views)
Tasted by Mr. Bacchus on 4/29/2016 & rated 98 points: Outstanding, decanted for one hour, was great with first sip, all the way the last. Finish was phenomenal, can still taste it the next day! A fantastic wine to celebrate my 32nd anniversary. (2671 views)
Tasted by WineWright on 4/14/2016 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous aromas and flavors, purity and balance, with a 45 sec. finish. Fabulous experience! (2480 views)
Tasted by WVWine on 1/30/2016 & rated 100 points: This bottle was the cat's meow. Spice box smells until the very end. Deep dark purple color. Long, long finish. One bottle left. Not sure it can live up to this one. (2923 views)
Tasted by McKraftyWino on 12/25/2014 & rated 97 points: on a night with a dozen or so 2003's this one was one of the best (Shafer Hillside Select the other 'best')
all wines from 2003 took a while in the glass to evolve, some required decanting.
This bottle (and the Shafer) stood out and were noticed! (3717 views)
Tasted by wdb001 on 12/24/2012 & rated 96 points: Double decanted and put back in cellar for a few hours. Served with standing rib roast, which was a wonderful combination. Dark purple color with no signs of bricking. Notes of blackberries, cassis, cedar and a hint of dark chocolate. Beautiful finish with fully integrated tannins. Delicious. It is drinking well now but has many years before reaching maturity. (5515 views)
Tasted by bradsamuel on 10/17/2012: The best. Unreal. My favorite. (2225 views)
Tasted by mcneil7 on 9/20/2012 & rated 95 points: Excellent wine great nose of fruit with a hint of blueberry. (5487 views)
Tasted by mcneil7 on 4/17/2011 & rated 96 points: Deep in color, nose at first was heavy with spices, chocolate and heat. After being opened for half hour the nose became more defined with dark cherry, spices, choclate, a hint of blue berry. On the palate it was full flavored good structure with medium tannins an excellent wine (6780 views)
Tasted by Dr. Pato on 2/21/2011 & rated 95 points: Grapey sweet with no noticeable tannic bite. (6524 views)
Tasted by pdemaio on 10/5/2010 & rated 97 points: huge and lovely. a bit medicinal along with the berries and mocha you expect. Beautifiul (6220 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
