Community Tasting Notes (average 87.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 114 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by NarunP on 4/28/2021 & rated 90 points: Unknown blend (most likely 100% Cabernet Sauvignon)

Clean, transparent rim, deep opaque core. Garnet, ruby color. No sign of bricking yet.

Aromatics is of fresh cassis, red cherry, slightly minty. Uplifting.

Palate is dense but round. Quite evolved with no harsh tannin. Noticeable unintegrated oaky profile: vanilla bean, charred wood, burnt butter. Lots of fruit but fresh. Wild strawberry, cassis, red currant, licorice. Finish is long but slightly more oak-infused notes than one would have liked.

This is actually quite classic despite what I described regarding the barrel-derived residual characters. It's pure and fresh. No creaminess or heaviness typically associated with modern Napa cab. However, I doubt that the oak will completely integrated here, otherwise this would have merited much higher score. 90. (1087 views)

Tasted by jbehrendt on 10/13/2014 & rated 89 points: An enjoyable cabernet sauvignon with beef. A great value. (2920 views)
Tasted by pcarleto on 9/14/2014 & rated 89 points: The wine color is ruby to purple. It has slow legs. I found light to medium sediment in the bottle. It smells like forest floor, mineral and red currant. It tastes like cherry, black pepper and mineral. It is full bodied with a medium finish and medium acidity. (2460 views)
Tasted by VinoHunter on 2/9/2014 & rated 90 points: Very good for the price. Almost Zin like with its finish and the tannins are well integrated. (1543 views)
Tasted by lockestep on 10/19/2013 & rated 88 points: Last bottle, mellow Cab is a little light in body and lacks great complexity, but offers a decent bang for the buck. (2346 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 6/18/2013 & rated 89 points: Consistent with previous bottle, great value, refined flavor, sediment, amazing... year in and year out. (4342 views)
Tasted by JPLogan on 6/17/2013 & rated 89 points: Alex Vall! Great value. (2004 views)
Tasted by bjschmitt on 5/26/2013 & rated 88 points: With strip steak, roast garlic potatoes, green beans, rustic bread.
Clear dark ruby.
Nose is pure cabernet, almost sweet, floral, medium intensity.
Smooth, dry, velvet, nice fruit (more cherry than anything) and almost coffee and dark chocolate in the mix.
Medium finish. (3305 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 3/3/2013 & rated 89 points: Nice aromatics of cassis and cedar coupled with medium bodied black cherry and berry flavors. Finishes with dry and dusty subtle tannins. Good value as always. (4603 views)
Tasted by lockestep on 2/10/2013 & rated 88 points: Fairly straightforward Macon, medium body, round finish. Pleasant match for Lobster Rosetto. (3171 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 1/25/2013 & rated 89 points: Earthy aromas of black fruit, leather, licorice, and sandalwood. Juicy with spicy flavors of cherry, blackberry, and dried black currants. This cabernet is characterized by fine acidity, ripe tannins, and a healthy dose of chocolate throughout. Gains sweetness in the glass. Well done. (4220 views)
Tasted by soon.wine on 11/3/2012 & rated 84 points: Decanted 1 hour. Nice ruby color. Hardly any nose. Some cassis, earthy tones, not much in terms of fruit. Very one dimensional and boring. Inexpensive but not an enjoyable wine. (79)

Update (6th November) Vacuum pumped and stored in the wine cabinet, opened again 3 days later. MUCH better this time. Floral nose, well balanced, slightly tart, medium finish. Rating updated. (5433 views)
Tasted by brooklynian on 9/11/2012: Great grocery store priced wine. Straightforward Cab, a little lighter than most. Approachable with some good almost tart dark fruit and sweet oak. A little dry on the finish. (4824 views)
Tasted by ABWP on 7/6/2012 & rated 85 points: This is my third bottle of 2009 Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County. Strangely, I almost think the first two bottles I had (in restaurants) were better, but the third was still good. Good nose, good oak.

The wine looks Garnet colored. It smells and tastes like Oak. The body and finish is Medium. (2521 views)
Tasted by comlaw on 7/5/2012 & rated 88 points: Outstanding for the price. Good fruit and tannin. (4237 views)
Tasted by lebo9968@gmail.com on 7/5/2012 & rated 87 points: Not as good as prior vintages. Still a decent CA cab sauv at that price point, but not as deep and interesting as prior vintages. (4667 views)
Tasted by phillyboyP on 6/4/2012 & rated 88 points: Very good for $10-$12. (4416 views)
Tasted by RandomCoil on 5/7/2012 & rated 90 points: Oak and cedar, ripe fruit and spice. Excellent example of a domestic cab. (4253 views)
Tasted by blabbott on 4/28/2012 & rated 86 points: Tolerable wine, not something you'd go out of your way to buy. Not a Costco purchase, but local Maui grocery store purchase. $19, we over paid. Slightly acidic blackberry, light for a cab, medium finish. (2247 views)

Alexander Valley Vineyards

Producer website
Alexander Valley Vineyards is owned and operated by the Harry Wetzel family. Founded in 1975, it is located on Cyrus Alexander's old homestead.
The Wetzel Family Estate now grows fourteen grape varieties, on diverse sites stretching from the banks of the Russian River up onto the hillsides. Each grape variety is matched to a specific soil type and exposure. Vineyard Manager Mark Houser and Winemaker Kevin Hall work as a team to maximize fruit flavor in the vineyard and to create balanced wines that capture the grapes’ varietal characteristics. Hank Wetzel oversees the vineyard and winery operations, and his wife Linda continues to oversee administration. Now the third generation of Wetzels has joined the winery. Harry Wetzel, IV is assistant winemaker while younger brother Robert is the National Sales Manager.
Alexander Valley Vineyards produces 100,000 cases annually, 17 varietal wines and proprietary blends. Seventy-five percent of AVV’s production is red wine. Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon constitute roughly half of total production. Other varietals include Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Gewurztraminer, Syrah, Sangiovese, Viognier, and Cabernet Franc.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
