Tasted by Markus IWC on 3/29/2018 & rated 91 points: Gaja 2000 tasting, wine #1: Blue/red fruit, cedar, sweet tobacco, hay, grass. Evident cab nose. Warm palate with expressive and highly concentrated fruit. Lots of spices, tar and oak. Friendly and well integrated tannins. Early in drinking window. 95% CS, 3% MER, 2% CF. From vineyards in Barbaresco. High quality wine but not my cup of tea. (1977 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 12/8/2017: My first time with this wine, a cab sauvignon based wine from Piedmont with some decent age on the bottle. I think this would have really benefitted from a decant, but the bottles were disappearing swiftly and not time for such matters. The color on this is quite dark and dense, the nose is black fruits, earth with some rose petal floral notes. This definitely gets better the longer it is in the glass, with the nice aromatics coming through the denser palate. While I liked this I didn't really spend as much time with the glass as I would have liked. (3192 views)
Tasted by zTroy on 10/31/2016 & rated 95 points: Drank during wine tasting in martinborough with small group of GARY narkles. Drank it later in the night and after cleaning palate with patron anejo. Soft as silk panties, a little blue cheese and eucalyptus. Loved it (3772 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 9/29/2016 & rated 91 points: Kleur: Diep robijnrood. Aroma / bouquet: Het typische bouquet van een belegen Cabernet-Sauvignon. Donker kersenfruit, gronderig, paddestoelen. Een vleugje stalgeur. Tertiair. En aangenaam! Smaak / Afdronk: Gematigde zuurgraad. Prachtige concentratie. Vol. Maar tegelijkertijd boterig zacht. Fantastisch rijpe tannines. Indrukwekkend lange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: De Wine Advocate was buitengewoon kritisch, ik ben zeer enthousiast. Heerlijk. Mondvullend en boterzacht. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 91/100

Google Translate:

Color: Deep ruby red Aroma / bouquet:. The typical bouquet of a mature Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark cherry fruit, earthy mushrooms. A hint of barnyard smell. Tertiary. And pleasant Taste / Finish: Moderate acidity. Superb concentration. Full. But at the same buttery soft. Fantastic ripe tannins. . Impressively long finish General / potential: The Wine Advocate was extremely critical, I'm very excited. Lovely. Mouth-filling and butter soft. 50+ Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Taste / Finish: 16 + General / potential: 8 = 91/100 (3861 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 5/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Gaja Masterclass with Gaia Gaja: Menthol, spice, toast and truffle. Good acidity on the palate, the wine still feels tight though, there is not a lot given away at this point in time and maybe another 5 years would help. (4759 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 11/9/2014 & rated 92 points: Opend 3 hours before dinner. Dark red/black color. Nose was black fruit, black currant. Palate was dark red/black fruit, black currant, spice. Very good balance. drank over 2 hours, it still keept the fruit.
Will last for a long time, however I'm not sure it will develop a lot.
Long finish. (3746 views)
Tasted by Serge Birbrair on 8/18/2013: Low expectations help delivery. Closer to the New World then old, the classy cab which didn't disappoint. I wish I had more. (4142 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 3/2/2013 & rated 92 points: Both Parker and Tanzer underrated this wine. Wonderful black cherries, raspberry undertones, mushrooms, spice (but not black pepper), hints of green pepper and 20+ second finish. This wine took about 30 minutes to fully open but had almost not sediment and is in the front half of its ideal drinking window. (3441 views)
Tasted by Rich S on 2/16/2013: Medium garnet color. Nose was somewhat muted with some dark red fruit and green pepper coming through along with some oak related notes. Cherry and red currant flavors on the palate with some woody oak flavors coming through. Very dry tannins and a little hollow on the midpalate. Not much of a finish either. You can tell the wine was well made but overall this was a disappointment. (3363 views)
Tasted by The Kokopelli on 7/8/2011 & rated 93 points: The Gaja Langhe Darmagi is a medium bodied, garnet wine with a brick edge. The wine is starting to show some age. The rich nose features licorice and vanilla. Plush and soft in the mouth with tastes of lots of melded red fruits. The long finish is rich with lots of red fruits. The wine has excellent balance and has become a nearly seamless wine. This is just stellar and is drinking very well at this point in time. (4004 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 5/25/2010 & rated 90 points: Nose of cedar, leather, blackberry, green pepper, cassis, little vanilla. Palate of raspberry, earth, cocoa, black pepper. Average finish, Old world. (3416 views)
Tasted by tooch on 5/24/2010 & rated 92 points: Single-Blind Cabernet Dinner (Urbana, Washington, DC): Tobacco, roasted eggplant, and smoky cloves. Spicy mushrooms, with a velvety mouthfeel...strong backbone with a pronounced elegance. (3355 views)
Tasted by ianinvirginia on 5/24/2010 & rated 91 points: Blind Cabernet Tasting with the DC WLTV Forum crew (Urbana, Washington, DC): Tobacco and pencil, dried rose petals on the nose - really picked up the prosciutto on the table and ran with it - should have been a hint it was the Italian of the blind tasting. Enjoyed the dusty cocoa tannins and long dry finish but would have liked just a bit more fruit. (3380 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 5/24/2010 & rated 91 points: Single-Blind Cabernet Tasting @ Urbana (Washington, D.C.): the nose has cedar, tobacco, leather jacket and eucalyptus. delightful nose. medium bodied. silky, rich and spicy. very complex, and the mouthfeel suggests some age. (3381 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 3/12/2010 & rated 94 points: Simply delish and what a surprise. Velvet tannins and a wonderful violet backbone... (2441 views)
Tasted by tooch on 4/17/2009 & rated 92 points: Decanted this wine for nearly 4 hours before my first glass. I did try a small 1oz. pour at first and it was tight, austere, and unapproachable. The first glass began with very earthy undertones augmented with dark cherry and hints of cocoa. The earthiness blew off after about 5-10 minutes and the dark cherry began to wrap itself around a strong dried tobacco flavor. The tobacco kept building over the course of the bottle to an absolute crazy level. The wine itself was still wound a bit tight, but was quite smooth, exhibiting good mushroom, tobacco, and cocoa flavors. As I near the end of my final glass, the cherry flavors began to crescendo to a strong, firm finish. This wine is sitting at 9 years old, and can probably last another 5-7 years. Not sure what I'll do with my other bottle, but it won't be opened anytime soon. (2827 views)
Tasted by psmith on 4/3/2009: Dark fruits and a dusty, Piedmont-inspired cabernet nose. Medium bodied and deep, classy texture and flavors. Fine tannins. Young, but perfectly enjoyable. Very good. (2706 views)

Gaja

Producer website

Located in the Tuscany and Piedmont regions of Italy, Gaja makes collectible Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines, including the Langhe Conteisa label. Gaja wines are among the highest-rated in all of Italy. It is perhaps best known for its Super Tuscans, which are some of the most elegant on the market. However, the estate also makes top-quality wines rooted in Italian tradition, such as Barbaresco. It is perhaps the most lauded Barbaresco producer today.

Although the estate produces 18 different wines, the production is low at just 350,000 bottles per year, making these wines very rare. The best Gaja vintages include 2018, 2016, and 2015 as well as historically well-performing vintages such as 2013, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Many of Gaja’s best vintages have received perfect scores from critics

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon
