Community Tasting Notes (average 87.7 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 87 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Pvinbrock on 8/30/2012 & rated 91 points: Great wine not too much oak (5803 views)
Tasted by vine20 on 7/18/2012 & rated 87 points: Pale yellow with a subyle citrus. Bitter lemon predominates, some fizz and medium minerality. (5759 views)
Tasted by sacprod on 6/22/2012: - Yellow color. (5872 views)
Tasted by Wyliecoyote on 3/24/2012 & rated 89 points: This wine is at its prime. The colour and warm climate fruit fragrances are inviting. The palate highlights the fruit components and the finish is crisp without being steely. (6024 views)
Tasted by IlonaN on 8/2/2011 & rated 89 points: Ripe chardonnay flavors with ample acidity and none of that butterscotch oak influence. I like it! Holding up well at this point. (6739 views)
Tasted by vine20 on 7/3/2011 & rated 88 points: Pale yellow with a greenish hue. Nose of citrus. Bright fresh lemon, grapefruit, oranges with a zesty mouthfeel and moderate acidity. No finesse or elegance. (2631 views)
Tasted by fer999 on 10/13/2010 & rated 89 points: Short finish. Bright citrus, lemon. (3354 views)
Tasted by will2wine on 9/11/2010 & rated 85 points: Unoaked yet seemingly allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation, this wine to me expresses the worst of both schools of chardonnay: it lacks both the complexity of traditional Cali examples and the freshness and mineral cut of the Burgundian style. For all that, however, it's well made and offers some nice fruit. (3491 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 9/6/2010 & rated 90 points: Best one yet --- fresh fruit with small amount of buttery taste - very balanced with good acidity (3564 views)
Tasted by tabrand on 8/28/2010 & rated 92 points: Clean & crisp finish (3504 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 6/18/2010 & rated 89 points: same as earlier note but a little less fruit. I find the wine zingy and substantial though. (3784 views)
Tasted by Gfritzh on 6/18/2010 & rated 89 points: A nice, relatively light and refreshing Chardonnay with well balanced fruit and acidity and a bit of spice. Drinking well now. (3763 views)
Tasted by Gfritzh on 5/20/2010 & rated 88 points: Drank side by side with Mer Soleil 07. This was much lighter and more drinkable. The Mer Soleil was very heavy with strong oak notes and far more viscous. (3802 views)
Tasted by godx on 5/14/2010 & rated 88 points: No formal notes. Very good. (3861 views)
Tasted by Gfritzh on 4/28/2010 & rated 90 points: Much improved since the last bottle. Drinking very well now. (3869 views)
Tasted by mdstenner on 3/14/2010 & rated 89 points: Lovely pale gold color, with a round and citrus nose and apple and pear. The palate show glorious tree fruit, good richness, wonderful acidity, and the wine finishes with meyer lemon on the finish. (3928 views)
Tasted by pmilnes on 3/5/2010: Bills bday (4125 views)
Tasted by Wino from Michigan on 3/1/2010 & rated 89 points: Very nice with stir fry -- the acidty really works with the food. Bright falvors of citrus with little / no oak. (4111 views)
Tasted by Sauvyfan on 2/16/2010 & rated 86 points: Enjoyable Cali chard, but this comes a caveat; I don't like Cali chard. This one was buttery without the oak. Good fruit, but this much more viscous than French chard. (4305 views)
Tasted by bambam on 1/11/2010 & rated 87 points: Nice weight for an unoaked chard. Fruit is well rounded with a soft finish. The only reason I don't rate this higher was that as it warmed up it had a slight "dirty" smell to it that was off. (4275 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 10/5/2009 & rated 83 points: There is a richness I did not anticipate from an unoaked Chard. Beefier than I expected, to be sure. But not totally out of the woods. As there is also a bit of a harshness. That harshness might, just possibly, have been less edgy if light oaking had been used. But on the whole, not bad (82.5). (4573 views)
Tasted by cabdrinker on 8/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Still a solid 91 and a crowd pleaser on this scorching hot day. White peaches for days in this bottle. All previous notes apply. (4648 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 8/11/2009 & rated 87 points: Fairly heavy bodied, creamy yet acidic in texture. Has a nice mix of citrus and tropical fruits, but seems a bit disjointed. Falls short of being impressive and it's not worth the price of admission. (4635 views)
Tasted by Gfritzh on 7/27/2009 & rated 88 points: Did not pair very well with Lobster salad. The wine was a bit too acidic for the sweetish lobster which resulted in a slightly sour finish. (4682 views)
Tasted by hankj on 7/18/2009 & rated 82 points: I liked the previous vintage but am not a fan of this one. It is too heavy and cloying (relatively -- it isn't port) for the tropical fruitiness of its cold fermentation. The "oak" others are referring to is too much apparent diacetyl from ML fermentation. The softness of the ML oozes into the slight heaviness of the finish -- in a word it is flabby (relatively, again).

I say if you are going to go bigger-bodied with a cold-fermented steel-tank Chardonnay, you ought to blend in just enough warmer-fermented, oaked Chardonnay to carry it. Or keep it lighter and crisper like the previous vintage. (4726 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
