Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 3/5/2024: Brought this to a Parker 100 pointer theme dinner with friends, decanted for 2 hours, elegant, soft, balanced, delicious (1582 views)
Tasted by Jhalpern27 on 2/20/2024 & rated 94 points: Great bottle tonite, however paired against 2016 Quintessa it was second place (1784 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 2/17/2024 & rated 91 points: TN written upon opening. Medium(+) ruby, slow moving legs @14% abv. Closed nose, savory, barnyard, slightly volatile. Slightly off-dry, medium acidity, medium(+) tannin, medium(+) alcohol and full body. Palate: lots of blueberry, blackberry jam, licorice, milk chocolate, grilled meat. Concentrated and powerful, dense, smooth. Balanced, complex, good length with slightly puckering tannins.
49% Merlot and 51% Cabernet Sauvignon. (1531 views)
Tasted by The_Cat on 12/2/2023: Lots of blackberry blueberry a bit plum roasted coffee. Full bodied still firm tannins for a few other decades excellent finish (2316 views)
Tasted by tbirbaum on 11/4/2023 & rated 95 points: Open a magnum 2h before tasting. Continue to open in the glass. Very nice and smooth tanin. Can easily age longer but very good at the moment. (2572 views)
Tasted by Édifice on 10/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Bouquet of ripe dark berries, mint, pipe tobacco, undergrowth. Dense, lush, silky palate, ripe berries, salted caramel, structured, somewhat cool, maritime, salty. This bottle feels a bit restrained, yet stylish. (2521 views)
Tasted by speedywine on 6/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Never disappointed with the red Pape Clement. Wonderful success with this 2009 vintage ! (3296 views)
Tasted by chanukha on 6/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Wow, so different from other 2009’s I had where they were much softer and thought were ready to drink. Drinks similar 2010 and think it’s in the early drinking window. I can see these lasting for 20 years. (3234 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 5/26/2023: Bordeaux 2023-05-26 (Pessac Leognan): X (2945 views)
Tasted by Southkevin2 on 5/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Delicious. 3 hour slow ox and then drank over the next 3 hours. Expressive floral palate. Bright red fruit on the palate. (2731 views)
Tasted by Get Real on 5/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Incredibly smooth as the previous bottle was and very enjoyable but did not seem particularly complex. Possibly more about me and the accompanying food as the previous bottle was exceptional (2472 views)
Tasted by MRG73 on 4/24/2023 & rated 95 points: Tasted directly from the bottle this wine seemed open and ready to drink, if a little demure. After an hour decant it came alive and tasted young and fresh with noticeable acids on the finish but without that lovely 09 plushness. Beautiful smoky nose (dissipated after a while) and balanced fruits but not a concentrated block buster. After about 90 minutes of decant it really came into its own and filled out. Day 2 and the bottle was singing with that lovely 09 plushness which you could easily confuse for a St Emilion. This was a very good bottle. Recommendation to get the decant right as it really changed character as it opened up, especially with the slow ox overnight in the fridge. (2395 views)
Tasted by JustBreathe680 on 3/20/2023 & rated 96 points: This wine was purchased from Morrell & Co in New York City on 12/2/17, the weekend before a major life changing event. On 3/20/23, it was an unexpected pull at my wife's request to celebrate her first day at her new job.

Due to the spontaneity of opening this bottle, I decided to decant in a Zalto Mystique decanter designed to accomodate magnums, offering a bigger surface to air ratio with the hopes of accelerating the aeration process. The wine was decanted for 1 hour prior to the first sip and followed over the next 5 hours. A Sensory stem was used and there was no food pairing. However, the wine would have paired beautifully with a well marblized steak.

The Bordeaux blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, with the remainder being Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

The color was deep purple. The bouquet was floral with red and black fruits, hints of smoke and earthy undertones. The palate was of black fruits, brown spices, cocoa, graphite, earth, and pyrazines. The wine gained in complexity and weight with extended air exposure. The last few glasses were the best, displaying good balance, nice acidity and fine grained tannins. The wine was medium-full to full bodied.

The wine was a joy to drink and was the perfect pull begin our next chapter! There are decades of life ahead of this beauty. (2808 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 11/23/2022 & rated 94 points: Ten Vintages Haut Bailly vs Mission HB: Preamble: All wines tasted blind in 10 vintage flights (1994-2015). To every flight one random third wine from Pessac Leognan added (2x Haut Brion, 2x Smith, 2x Pape Clement, 1x Branon, 1x Luchy Halde, 1x Carmes, 1x Chevalier). All wines opened a few hours before consumption but no decanting.

Some findings:
1) Haut Bailly outperformed Mission (5 vs 4 wins, 92.5 vs 90.5 average). 2) Haut Bailly is a rather structured wine which seems to shine bright in ripe and warm vintages, without any form of excess ripeness or extraction. 3) When done right (05/15), Mission eclipses Haut Bailly with its depth and delineation , but several vintages showed a bit too ripe but especially with the alcohol not well masked (09/10). 4) Pessac wines usually need quite some air to open up. In this setting (no decanting), most wines needed a lot of swirling to fully open up and will need more cellar time. 5) The best wines today were Haut Bailly 09 (96pts) & 10 (95pts) and Mission 05 & 15 (95pts).

TN: Intense, fruity nose with green bell pepper and herbs. Quite balanced and fresh. On the palate there is a beautiful blue, black and red fruit potpurri. Herbs, minerality, some smoky notes complement the picture.. Overall round, fine and fresh. Very good overall, very balanced. Consistent with previous bottles.

Decanting: Like with many 2009s, a short decant should be sufficient. (5046 views)
Tasted by Édifice on 11/12/2022 & rated 97 points: Wonderful, appetizing bouquet of ripe blackberries, blackcurrant, pipe tobacco, vanilla, mint. Intense palate of ripe berries, milk chocolate, cedar, still a bit of a tannic bite, leading to a relatively long finish with sweet and salty elements, some mint and spices, slight bitterness. Rich wine, very hedonistic and enjoyable. (3309 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 11/5/2022 & rated 96 points: Double decanted by Mark for 2.5 hrs, deep ruby, black cherry & leather, med/firm tannins, long finish; outstanding & went beautifully with an amazing veal chop with morel cream sauce at Cote d'Azur in Naples, just entering peak drinking, drink or preferably hold for another year or 3 (3565 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 11/5/2022 & rated 96 points: Decanted 2.5 hours prior to going back into bottle and taking to our fav French place with Joel & Diane. Giant veal chop with wonderful cream sauce and 3-4 different types of mushrooms. Heaven. Perfumed nose to start. While this drank well after the decant, it improved further after another hour of air. Developed more weight, depth and mouth feel. Smooth, silky, dark red/black fruit with some noted spice component. Well balanced and put together. It might yet reach greater heights given the riveting acidity that emerges after 5-6 hours of air. This is one of yet another Bdxs that if drunk in the right spot could make a Cali red junkie, feel pretty good. (4474 views)
Tasted by Pascal on 10/27/2022 & rated 92 points: Une trés belle surprise aprés plus de 3h d'aération. A carafer dans une carafe étroite. (3235 views)
Tasted by etyc on 10/12/2022: Popped, and let to stand in bottle as we drank through the '69 & '98 Cheval Blancs. We finally got to this after 2-hrs+ into the dinner. A big, ripe & plush wine, this felt a tad "clumsy" beside the '98 CB without hitting the same level of freshness as the right-banker. Still a good well-made wine no doubt, with gobsmack lots of fruits - black-berries, plums & cassis amidst notes of earth & cedar. A polished & rich drink, but just wished the acidity/freshness were a tad higher... (2633 views)
Tasted by Nontaco on 8/21/2022 & rated 94 points: 3 hr decant, enjoyed over 3 hrs. Big, complex nose. Earth, green peppers, tomatoes on the vine. Very balanced and composed. Smooth and silky. Seemed to get weaker in my mouth, never really went anywhere, nothing too interesting. Don’t get the various reviews (including from the pros) of a long finish - quite the contrary. Ultimately found flavor profile underwhelming. Opened it up to watch Usyk/Joshua fight and was one of those times the bottle is perfectly fine but you wish you were drinking something else. (2965 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 6/4/2022 & rated 98 points: My last of these from this vintage. This was particularly delicious and rich - hallmarks of this amazing vintage. This has an uncanny weight and power alongside so much brightness and lift in the fruit profile. So much going on, hedonistic. Not sure if it deserves the 100pts but it's not far off. (4148 views)
Tasted by Mathijs81 on 5/21/2022 & rated 96 points: So ... I mean, I get the hype on this 100RP. And yes, this is an amazing wine, but not a 100 for me.

Surely, its luscious, succulent, sexy, velvet round, its fragrance oozes through the entire room.
But I did have something missing, it had a somewhat greenish finish after some time in the glass.
Other than that, there is very little to fault here .. maybe just too much wood ?

Anyway, this is a beast of a wine, currently coming into maturity. Drink or hold. (3593 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 4/12/2022 & rated 94 points: A bit tight still after an hour but plush and glorious and singing at the three hour point. (4290 views)
Tasted by zimmy07 on 1/30/2022 & rated 93 points: This was very big in the beginning and diminished quick at the end. Very lush dark fruits, graphite, and heavy oak. Not totally integrated yet, still a bit flabby. at the same time after 3 hours in decanter opened up well but at hour 7 started to diminish. Other 2009 Bordeaux had the stregnth to go much longer with air. I had one bottle, glad I had it, a good wine, but prefer many other wines from Bordeaux more. My recommendation drink in next 2-3 years, a 1-2 hour decant. (4473 views)
Tasted by yukoner on 1/1/2022 & rated 98 points: Super in all aspects. Heavenly nose, gentle tannins and a very long smooth finish. definitely has reached the beginning of its drinking window (4195 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
