Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 56 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SteadyEddy on 2/8/2016 & rated 89 points: I enjoyed this more than I expected from other CT notes. It's pleasant and a fairly rich pinot with sweet, ripe fruit, nicely balanced with acidity and polished tannins. Soft and smooth mouthfeel. Nothing remarkable, however. (415 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 1/20/2016 & rated 90 points: Cherry, raspberry, a little crushed stone, soft tannins. Not too complex, but enjoyable. (706 views)
Tasted by tann0008 on 11/29/2015 & rated 93 points: Classic Selyem. Deep cherry with smooth finish and hint of tannin. Not too earthy. (1049 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 10/8/2015 & rated 89 points: A straight laced Pinot with clean lines, pure red cherry fruit, and a tightly wound but pleasant finish. Very good, but not outstanding. (1344 views)
Tasted by BMCKIE99 on 9/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Expected more from this. Very nice, smooth but no surprises. I get the cherry and cola. Maybe deeper earthy flavors. (1392 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 7/4/2015 & rated 90 points: Blood red. Sweet nose full of red fruits. A floral sweetness. Well integrated and delicate tannins complement the silky mouthfeel. Cherries, raspberries, and a hint of tarragon behind the fruit. Drinking beautifully. (1509 views)
Tasted by schott on 6/20/2015 & rated 90 points: Opened and poured immediately with no decant time. None needed really. Immediate cherry cola aroma. Nice long viscous legs. Lighter color and flavor, as is the norm for the 2011 vintage relative to 2010 or 2012. Very smooth and silky. Great tannin balance. Perhaps lighter than I would ideally prefer, but certainly nice. I would rate 89 to 90. (1354 views)
Tasted by wineduggery on 6/2/2015 & rated 93 points: Concentrated and elegant. One of the best Pinots we've had in recent memory. (1383 views)
Tasted by lzelman on 11/30/2014 & rated 93 points: another great WS pinot. Lots of fruit with long lasting finish. Went well with the turkey dinner (2239 views)
 Tasted by crash2u on 8/27/2014 & rated 89 points: Inky (2517 views)
Tasted by jpmo on 7/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Tasted this tonight versus a 2011 Peay Sonoma Coast and a 2012 Rivers-Marie Summa - the Williams Selyem was a unanimous 3rd. It wasn't bad but just didn't measure up to the others. We won't open our other bottles of the 2011 Westside Road for quite some time to see how it evolves. It was a good wine but perhaps just too young. (2172 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 7/12/2014 & rated 90 points: Still very young. Needed a fair bit of time to open. The cherry burned off and revealed more complex spices, red fruits and some licorice. Nice bottle (2140 views)
Tasted by kultcha on 7/4/2014: Fairly pretty nose with florals, ripe cherry and a little spice. Deep garnet colour. Nice silky palate with tons of ripe cherry, little baking spice and a good dose of cola leading right into oak. The oak was overpowering to me for the first few hours and settled the more the wine received air. Decent acidity and medium finish. No secondary development to speak of yet - this wine could use another 3+ years for me to integrate the oak. (2213 views)
Tasted by haldolugr on 6/22/2014 & rated 90 points: Cherry, cola, and floral with a touch of spice. Easy drinking with a nice finish. Better than its older brother which we drank the night before. (1694 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 5/11/2014 & rated 91 points: Good 3 days straight. (1431 views)
Tasted by UpfromtheCellar on 5/1/2014 & rated 90 points: Its hard to give this wine a "90" but after all is said and done, it deserves it. On the nose it's pinot pinot pinot sweetness in all its fragrant glory. OK. On the palate its sweet initial attack, florals, acids and oak. But its saving grace is its lightness, balance and silkiness that makes it all nose but no punch.

We had salmon tonight so I pretty much had to go with a pinot. I thought I would give these guys another chance. Mistake. Cali-noirs for the most part I find lack the the earthiness, the dusty dirt, that subtle something that O-noirs (at least the good ones) have in abundance. It makes them better with appetizers on the veranda daaarling, please pass another, thaaaank you daaarling, than salmon on the grill. But apart from that it was nice. Nothing left of this bottle!  Tasted by wineo11 on 11/16/2013 & rated 90 points: Still young, but opened up great after about an hour in the bottle. (2697 views)
Tasted by joeroth on 10/16/2013 & rated 92 points: Very approachable now but can age well for 2-3 more years. (2429 views)
Tasted by Cyrus of the Valley on 8/26/2013 & rated 88 points: needs a couple more years decanted for an hour then drank over the next 2 hours Very tight and restrained at this time (2401 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 4/24/2013 & rated 90 points: black cherry, cola, oak, fennel, vanilla and more; probably the most complex wine at the WS pickup WE, and good acidity/brightness to boot; all the component parts are just not integrated yet; plenty of upside. (3311 views)
Tasted by hal0 on 4/23/2013 & rated 89 points: Blackberry, black cherries, cola, oak. Nicely balanced. (2788 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Austria, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
