Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 233 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by hippoonroofeatingcake on 12/1/2023: Most unexpectedly backward and monstrous. Closed on the nose. Cassis! on the palate. And tannins! It's a wine of some power, but it needs time still. Not what one normally expects from Heitz at all.

Tasted by Border Boss on 9/16/2023: Double decanted two hours before consumption. Opaque red. Black fruit on the nose. Moderate tannins and acid. Good balance. With additional air, the red fruits on the palate emerge. Drinking well now, but will be fine for another 5-7 years. (481 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 9/15/2023 & rated 93 points: Friday Night Uptown Brown Bagger (R&D's): Double blind. Herb and black fruit notes, with hints of dried hay/straw. Medium tannins. Red plum, currant and earth qualities on the palate. Finishes with good length; seamless across the palate. This seemed very Bordeaux-ish to me tonight. 93-94 pts. (J&J) (688 views)
Tasted by #1 or #2? on 7/2/2023 & rated 92 points: colour is a rich dark plum. nose leans a little more to the savoury side of the spectrum but with air, it grows in complexity and sweet (and spicy notes) become more evident as well. palate is much the same, more savoury and woody but with nice acidic zip and a healthy hint of cassis on the back end. very nice. (628 views)
Tasted by Monetthecat on 11/5/2022 & rated 90 points: Kept in proper storage since purchase. Opened and let it breathe for approx 1 hour. Good balance and drinking like a proper well made cab. Very nice to enjoy now (1276 views)
Tasted by MemorialWineFan on 2/17/2022 & rated 89 points: Good bottle. No issues with cork. Wine still in great shape. (1803 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 5/16/2021: Five years on since last tasted, and now in a distinctly savory stage. Mineral salts, beef blood, bouillon, more bass than treble. Red and black fruits are present but subtle. Referentially classical and very, very good. (2218 views)
Tasted by Red Covered Bridge on 5/8/2021 flawed bottle: Big. Pepper. (2111 views)
Tasted by Somm David T on 4/10/2020 & rated 94 points: I bought 3 or 4 bottles of the 06 Heitz Napa. I think this is my first bottle. I either have none or one left. Better gets notes tonight! I think I gave others away. What was I thinking? Wine is meant to be shared.

What is better than paying around $33 for a bottle of wine, forgetting about it for twelve years and having it blossom on your palate the way it is tonight? This is a prime example of two things; you don’t need to spend a hundred(s) for a really good bottle of wine and their is absolutely no substitution for appropriate cellaring time.

The nose reveals; steeped, dark fruit wading in fruits of ripe/ruby; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, baked, black plum & strawberries, hovering raspberries with pomegranate, light liqueur notes. Mild alcohol vapors, black licorice, sweet tarriness, mixed dark fruit cola/licorice, mid, dark spices, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & vanilla, saddle-wood, graphite, dark rich souls, forest floor with dry leaves, dry crushed rocks, dry twigs, tree sap, mint/eucalyptus, soft leather, dry tobacco with ruby, brilliant, fresh & withering, candied; dark, red, purple florals with a field of violets.

The body is, rich, ruby and creamy with fruits of; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, baked, black plum & strawberries, hovering raspberries with pomegranate that shows light liqueur notes. Mild alcohol vapors, black licorice, dark, steeped, black , assorted fruit teas, sweet tarriness, mixed dark fruit cola/licorice, mid, dark spices, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon & vanilla, caramel, mocha, saddle-wood, graphite, savory grilled meats, dark rich souls, forest floor with dry leaves, moist clay & top soil, dry crushed rocks, dry twigs, tree sap, mint/eucalyptus, hints of Provence herbs, soft leather, dry tobacco with ruby, brilliant, fresh & withering, candied; dark, red, purple florals with a field of violets. The acidy is like a cool waterfall on a warm day. The beautiful, elegant, extremely well knitted balance is in the realm of “forget about it”. Sometimes the right wine, when it’s right, moves the entire body. Such as it is tonight.

The tension, structure, length and balance have just hit their high point and will remain there for another five years into a slow decline over the next 10-15 years, stored impeccably.

This might be the best Napa Heitz I’ve bought & stored. It’s stunning and way over delivering its price point. One complex wine!! (3240 views)
Tasted by LWI on 3/17/2019 & rated 90 points: Blind. Morels and licorice, smoke; high maturity of fruit, some acid, good length. (3272 views)
Tasted by Echodog on 3/9/2019 & rated 91 points: Great med-full body napa cab. Poured to a rich dark Burgandy color. Floral aromas and wonderful dark fruit flavors. Decantered 1 hour before pouring. Personally I think it’s time to open up this vintage and enjoy it. I’ll be buying more and store it for another 5 years. (2647 views)
Tasted by sipnwine on 4/13/2018 & rated 93 points: Nice depth of flavor that lingers on the tongue, very robust
Unquie flavor, really nice for sipping, smooth (3431 views)
Tasted by rsweiss on 1/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Opened with dinner un-decanted, and after about 30 minutes aerating in our glasses, WOW! Drink now, it is as good as it
's gonna get. (5858 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 9/18/2016 & rated 91 points: Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
I must adjust my last tasting note. Today I opened the bottle and drank the remaining half of it (first half poured with Coravin). Either I or the wine had a bad day when I wrote my first note in April or the wine has really transformed/changed: Now the palate matches the nice Napa Cab nose: fine, silky tannin, noticeable fruit, spicyness, complexity and a good length. Only the high alc of 14,5% abv prevents an even higher score. Wonderful wine at its beginning peak. (5578 views)
Tasted by bhouk on 8/28/2016: Checking in at 14.5% ABV, which I think of as HUGE, the 2006 Heitz comes across instead as a rich but well-balanced Napa Cabernet. Beautifully perfumed, there is a smack of kirsch liqueur on a frame of great bones -- a sturdy spine that is solid but not aggressive. There is a touch of heat on the finish, but all in all, this is a really wonderful example of what Napa can do. In context, a really good value as well. (4982 views)
Tasted by Tetherton on 8/22/2016 & rated 88 points: Good but not great. If you want a better Heitz Cab, spend the big bucks and get the Martha's Vineyard (which we don't do). We thought 10 years of cellaring would help; that was a so-so outcome. (5000 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 4/24/2016 & rated 89 points: Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
1 Glass poured with Coravin, aeration 2h
Wonderful, medium intense, elegant CS nose with fine oak, tobacco. Unfortunately the taste and palate can not keep up with the nose. Lacks complexity and depth, though still a good CS. No Need to hurry, has years ahead, but I doubt that it will improve. (4932 views)
Tasted by Ilikadajuice on 1/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Just fantastic. So sad last bottle. Heitz cabs age so well. (3367 views)
Tasted by Winecat on 12/17/2015: Florida Christmas 2015 (2881 views)
Tasted by Ilikadajuice on 9/5/2015 & rated 92 points: This is in such a good drinking window. Fantastic integration. Color, nose, palate and finish. All working together to deliver consistent experience. Still long life ahead. No decant. Pop and pour and immediately open (3417 views)
Tasted by dmellinger on 5/25/2015 & rated 95 points: This was so smooth and perfect (4026 views)
Tasted by Bloms on 5/20/2015 & rated 89 points: Drinking surprisingly well. Drank over 3 days, consistent throughout. (3351 views)
Tasted by FandL on 3/23/2015 & rated 89 points: Nicely paired with a BBQ/smoked boneless beef ribs cooked in a big green egg. (3324 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 2/8/2015 & rated 92 points: I like Heitz's style. Lovely perfumed nose of liquorice, sweet oak, menthol, and nuts. Sweet tannin, medium acidity, long finish. Excellent. (3391 views)
Tasted by stickmanparty on 12/6/2014 & rated 88 points: Boring. (3390 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
