Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 43 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Julian Marshall on 1/5/2023 & rated 89 points: Better than the 2012, which was really too syrupy, this has enough acidity to keep it on the right side of the tracks. Blackberry and cedar aromas, with quite a full-bodied mouthful of blackberry and slightly earthy dark cherry. So far, so good - where it slightly disappointed me was the lack of much personality - a little more Pessac earthiness would not have gone amiss. Also, it's a neither/nor sort of wine - neither the quality of a true CC nor the price of a CB or equivalent. There are lots of Crus Bourgeois from the Médoc costing half the price or less that would give it a run for the money. I preferred the Louvière 2010 from the same vintage, which cost a bit less.  Tasted by stephru on 1/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Superbe! Résolument Bordeaux. De la maturité mais encore beaucoup de tonus. On aime l'harmonie et la personnalité d'un vin de carbernet tout en finesse dans l'évolution. À déguster maintenant pour bénéficier du fruit et de la structure. (1455 views)
Tasted by Mads.b.v on 4/7/2021 & rated 88 points: Manglede en lige linje (3440 views)
Tasted by Krokfjord on 2/8/2021 & rated 92 points: Brilliant Pessac fra den smågeniale familien Perrin (Beaucastel, Tourelles etc). Tasted by Fwmsmeets on 3/25/2019 & rated 93 points: I think this wine is now at his best: abundance of fruit resulting in a great nose, caracteristic cedar and chocolate, making it easy to enjoy even without food, but was great with a steak with esplette peppers. Longlasting finish. (5236 views)
Tasted by Fwmsmeets on 2/2/2019 flawed bottle: It was corked. Despite of that one could taste a good spicy backbone, but a wine of this stature and price shouldn't be corked. Producer: do something with your material. (4272 views)
Tasted by stephru on 1/20/2019 & rated 91 points: Très coloré et aucun signe d'évolution. Tasted by Z1nnfull on 10/20/2018 & rated 91 points: This definitely fits the CellarTracker rating scale of "excellent" (90-93). I find it interesting that the most recent reviews are higher, indicative of the length of time a bottle like this takes to mature.
This is a heady wine, with graphite and intense black fruit notes. Lots of tannins left, but with the acidity and balance, great to pair with bolder meals. We let it breath 4 1/2 hours and it took every bit of that to get it where it needed to be, but this bruiser could well stand another year or two. Loved it...at $43 not a bad left bank Bordeaux buy, but give it LOTS of air if opening now, but I think better in late 2019 into 2020, IMO.
The second night, the couple ounces left were even a bit better, confirming the need for air or aging, upgrading my rating from 90 to 91 on that basis. (3372 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 11/19/2016 & rated 93 points: (Decanter FWE 2016) :: Lifted and complex, with flavours leaning on the dark fruit, toast and leather side but ample fruit to balance. This follows through on the palate, which is concentrated and balanced, with fine tannins and med acidity. (6182 views)
Tasted by Lord Rodney on 6/6/2016 & rated 90 points: Nice juicy Graves! (5255 views)
Tasted by Brett Pitt on 11/28/2015 & rated 90 points: Good (297 views)
Tasted by cork breath on 9/5/2015 & rated 90 points: It was very good but drank too soon. (6193 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 4/25/2015 & rated 92 points: An impressive showing for a young wine with the structure and stuffing to impress over the upcoming years. On this occasion, the pop & pour approach did it a disservice until aerated for an hour plus, and I think substantially more time would have served it well. Ripe floral nose. Palate of raspberry ad red currants and coffee, with a nice floral aspect. More intense than delicate. An underrated estate when it comes to its red IMO, especially in great vintages (the 2005 sings!). (6624 views)
(6056 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 8/28/2014 & rated 90 points: Medium bodied. Nicely balanced and structured, firm tannins, acidity, mineral and fruit. Nose is lacking...a competent wine nonetheless. (5679 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 6/14/2014: smells dark, coffee, complex and some perfume
tannic, young
some nice fragrance coming through
nice to have a proper wine after trying some weedy 13s
grippy, needs time
long finish (4575 views)
Tasted by Woodbridge Brad on 11/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Dark and ripe clearly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Ample oak, good tannin structure, intense fruit and good acid balance. Overall very balanced but quite pricy at $52. (4507 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/15/2013 & rated 89 points: On the light, elegant side of the style range with ripe, fresh cherries and black raspberries, earth and tobacco characteristics. The wine finishes with fresh, spicy, bright, red berries. (5643 views)
Tasted by Vmaster007 on 1/26/2013 & rated 86 points: nez discret, épices fines, bel équilibre, se boit bien (4893 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 1/23/2013 & rated 89 points: 2010 Bordeaux UGC Chicago (The Drake Hotel, Chicago IL): Nose: Nice and balanced nose with tones of dark red cherries, cedar, tobacco, and cranberries.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity and some taught tannins. There are nice tones of dark red cherries, cranberries, and cedar.

Overall: This is lacking on both the nose and palate. The plate thins out slightly on the mid and finish. (5308 views)
Tasted by yofog on 1/22/2013 & rated 90 points: Quite tannic and closed (duh?), what little this was showing was not that impressive. Seemed to have little stuffing, not the best balance, and a wonky finish. (3932 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/18/2013 & rated 91 points: 2010 Bordeaux at 2012 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting (Palace Hotel, San Francisco, California): Very dark red violet color; ripe red currant, floral nose; tight, ripe red currant, floral palate; needs 2 years; medium-plus finish (3295 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 1/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2010 Vintage Tasting San Francisco, nose of lovely fruit, red and black fruit, same on the palate, medium/big body, very tasty, medium amount of soft tannins present, long finish. (1971 views)
Tasted by stassivo on 11/10/2012: Le Salon du Vin de la Revue du Vin de France 2012 (Brussels): Much more open than the estate's second wine, which is curious. Red berry syrup at the nose with some liquorice and soft oak. Great fruit concentration on the palate mixed with lots of earthy notes. Chewy ripe tannins. Will age really well. (4784 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 11/3/2012 & rated 91 points: Light nose of red fruit, light smoke... tannins very well intergated, ripe black cherries, average lenght, nice balance (3195 views)

It is said that in the 18th century this wine was introduced to the Sultan of Constantinople’s palace because of its clarity and was called “mineral water from Carbonnieux”, thus defying the Islamic law.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
