Community Tasting Notes (average 88 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 208 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by owr on 2/21/2021 & rated 82 points: Light in colour with dried fruit and a cherry candy note ... comes across with some very high-toned fruit, raspberry being the most dominant, plus plenty of acidity. Set it aside for a moment.

Coming back to it and I'm noticing it is a hard drink with all those high-tones, because it never really smoothes out and provides pleasure; the acidity also proves to be a problem, it keeps getting right in your face. The wine's not bad, although I sure sound like I had plenty of problems with it. It is certainly an interesting glass of wine - but it's just hard to drink. (478 views)
Tasted by owr on 12/21/2017 & rated 86 points: earthy and slightly peppery, but mainly silky and smooth with dried red berries on the mid-palate. (1682 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 5/16/2016: Still drinking well. Good fruit & minerality. Great QPR. (2427 views)
Tasted by Seafoam Manor on 5/15/2016 & rated 87 points: About what I would expect from a $15 bottle of wine at nine years of age. The fruit had a bit of a stewed quality to it, with a meatiness and smokiness from the syrah. This is hanging on, rather than "aging", but this exceeded very low expectations. (2402 views)
Tasted by Seafoam Manor on 10/30/2015 & rated 88 points: Not as bad as previous reviews led me to anticipate.

Visually, this shows very little age with a bright medium ruby color, with legs that show the alcohol is probably on the higher side. On the nose, the syrah notes really dominate, with plums, blackberries and smoked meats. Oak and a touch of alcohol are also apparent. The palate picks up the red fruits from the grenache, which are slightly candied, but they are secondary to the black fruit, smokiness and meatiness from the syrah. On the finish you get a strong dark chocolate / coffee noted then it falls off the cliff.

This was made in a ripe style and seems to be on the downhill slope, although a little bit more near to the top than I expected. Certainly not the best wine I've ever had, but surprisingly good considering that its an 8 year old $15 bottle of wine that wasn't stored in particularly good conditions. If you have any, drink them now as this wine is headed in one direction. (2716 views)
Tasted by jayw on 8/28/2015: Can't tell if this wine is heat damaged or merely in decline. There's plenty of fruit, but it has an unpleasant stewed/candied quality that makes it barely drinkable. (2416 views)
Tasted by prism on 7/2/2015 & rated 85 points: Not an ager, apparently. Overly matured Garnacha. Drink up immediately and with low expectations. (1494 views)
Tasted by Kentw on 4/15/2015 & rated 82 points: Austere with very little fruit. Dry and forgettable. A bit better on day two with food. Not worth the money even at $13. (1460 views)
Tasted by kerv22 on 3/20/2014 & rated 90 points: Nice wine at the price point. Drinking well now. Probably has a year or two left in it.

Tasted by hdn on 2/27/2014 & rated 89 points: Heel donker, vrij aromatisch.
Veel rijp fruit, zelfs wat confituurachtig en daardoor geen 90 punten waard.
Veel heel fijn bezinksel. (1725 views)
Tasted by Wamrod on 12/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Sad to see my last bottle go - drinking very nicely right now (1923 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 4/2/2013 & rated 90 points: Still good after all of these years! (3063 views)
Tasted by lovemycab on 12/31/2012 & rated 89 points: I bought a case of this and the first 2 bottles I drank were mixed. One was awful and the other was average. Opened a third bottle on New Years and it was much better than the previous two. Don't know if first 2 bottles were just off, but hoping the next 9 I have left taste more like this one. Good fruit with lots of different hints, structure and tannins were decent. For the price, it well over delivered. (2897 views)
Tasted by DTLT on 10/25/2012 & rated 85 points: Not too crazy about this one. Might be past it's prime. One more left. (2502 views)
Tasted by prism on 9/15/2012 & rated 88 points: Popped and poured. Wasn't crazy about this bottle, which followed a 2009 Liberty School Cab (simple, rich, ripe, fruit-forward, easy drinking). By contrast, the Can Blau seemed less ripe and more vegetal. Certainly well made and still a great QPR, but I'm not inclined to repurchase at this point. (2538 views)
Tasted by K is for Kate on 8/26/2012: Started out with a bit of a weird rubbery edge, but as it opened up that went away. Fruity up front with a nice brightness on the mid-palate. Definitely works best with some meat to soften up the tannins, but they were not overwhelming. (2465 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 8/16/2012 & rated 88 points: Dark ruby color with nice black fruit aromas. On the palate it is full bodied and has a good minerality and bright acidity with cassis and red fruit flavors. Good balance but tad alcoholic with food. The wine has good tannins. Short length but pleasant finish. This vintage is a bit unripe and has a higher than average acidity that has actually made the wine more interesting. Overall a good buy. (2117 views)
Tasted by hesnctrl on 4/6/2012 & rated 87 points: PnV. Nice medium garnet color with moderate legs. Stony fruits with a hint of spice. Tart cherries up front, followed by some minerality. The mid-palate is a bit lacking and its very light on the palate. Finish is medium. The blend is 40% Mencia...I don't have any experience with this varietal to pass judgement on the wine, but it works as a weekday wine. (2439 views)
Tasted by BSpdx on 2/25/2012 & rated 90 points: Took to a party so limited notes. Overall this was quite good and maybe a touch better than the first bottle. Dark, rich fruit while also being surprisingly light on the palate. Would recommend. (2706 views)
Tasted by prism on 10/23/2011 & rated 91 points: This is an amazing value at the $10 I paid. Opened for an hour; Vinturied. Deep and rich; well-integrated tannins. Punches well above its weight. (3573 views)
Tasted by chifred on 10/21/2011 & rated 88 points: Dark garnet. Moderate nose with plum, blackberry, coffee, butterscotch(!?). Nice mouthfeel with minimal acid and rough tannins. Balanced fruit (blackberry) and stone. Long finish. Good value. Same 2nd day. (3316 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 10/12/2011 & rated 87 points: This wine is improving with bottle age (3443 views)
Tasted by Mr.Overhill on 8/12/2011 & rated 88 points: Not as rich and sweet as previous bottles of the same vintage; more tangy and one dimensional. It possesses a rich initial dark fruit profile, with good cedar and black cherry cola on the nose, and the initial impression is favorable with the bushy tannins and the molasses flavorings of the dark fruit. Unfortunately the initial impression doesn't carry long enough, with a more than expected hollowness of the same fruit as it settles on the tongue, and a sharp and short finish as well. My biggest concern is that it's much thinner than I thought it would be at this age, and am thinking that it's another "best drunk when young and phat" example from spain. That sweet-tart profile of the fruit really has me worried.... (3880 views)
Tasted by chifred on 6/25/2011 & rated 89 points: Deep garnet red. Full nose with blackberry and cocoa. Good acidity and rough tannins with lots of fruit and a bit of licorice and cocoa. Moderately smooth other than tannins and nice finish of fruit and oak. Strong value. (4192 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 6/17/2011 & rated 90 points: this wine got better on the second day. Black Cherry was dominant. Love this wine. (4278 views)

(Can Blau, Montsant) To say this wine is a tremendous value is an understatement. Ah, Garnacha grown in the mountains of Tarragona! A deep purple-red, it explodes with plum, blackberry, and spice aromatics; on the palate, it's full-bodied, richly textured, and savory. Despite the impact, the wine is balanced, with a smooth, long finish. It's distinctly Spanish, but if you pronounce the name in French, it sounds like a party. Hot Picks

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
