Tasted by lkilpio on 3/9/2024 & rated 94 points: This was in a lovely condition at the moment! The tannins had integrated and softened, but the wine was still fruity. There were lots of aromas and flavors of ripe black fruits. As typical for Pegau, there was some funk, but not too much. (1159 views)
Tasted by barryjkeller@gmail.com on 1/2/2024: Im not a big CDP fan but this was drinking so well. Soft and complex with the appearance of low alcohol. Very nice indeed. Will be interesting to se where it goes from here. (2496 views)
Tasted by Jokermac on 12/29/2023 & rated 92 points: Acquired Retail - Notes are from Coravin night prior to tasting event. - Clear semi-opaque solid garnet color at the core with little bricking at the rim. Healthy intense nose showing red fruit, smoked meats, earth, and vanilla. Would classify as still more primary vs secondary. Dry wine with good acid and moderate tannins. Palate produced chocolate, plum, and cedar. Balanced with medium+ body and long finish. High quality wine with long life ahead. Will likely improve. Hold 3-5yrs before trying again.
****After several hour decant it went more barnyard and was a bit off-putting. Could just be in an odd phase. (1965 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 12/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Over dinner. Quite expressive showing generous fruit, spices, notes of woodsmoke, leather, cured meat. Nicely balanced on the palate with ripe, but noticeable tannins. A touch of heat maybe towards the lingering finish, but overall really harmonious and well balanced. Drink or keep. 92-94 (2135 views)
Tasted by barryjkeller@gmail.com on 12/8/2023: Really enjoyed - drinking well. Complex red fruit, depth and structure. Decanted for 2 hours (1938 views)
Tasted by Tubulus on 10/30/2023: Not in a great place for me. Fruit seems to be on the downslope but there's still some drying tannin and a hint of alcohol. (2598 views)
Tasted by WineBurrowingWombat on 10/20/2023 & rated 94 points: Cracking the whip; 10/16/2023-10/23/2023 (Eagan, MN): N: Fresh light red fruits, awesomely restrained funk, just enough to make it very interesting. Light earth and damp, wet tree bark, almost like mulch, but with a pretty red floral note.

P: Deep yet elegant red fruits, similar earth and funk from the nose while also holding the same class and restraint as well.

I personally enjoy this very much right now. The funk has a restraint and has not completely developed into a funk-bully like the ‘98 Pegau I’ve had before, where the tertiary was just so overwhelming. I’m positive this can age for even longer but this is in a great spot for me. (2697 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 10/20/2023 & rated 92 points: Wine-a-palooza (Jason's house): Pop and pour. This had slight funk and a lot of earthiness, with strawberry, plum and some anise to round it out. This seems to be a young adult right now, I look forward to its maturity. (2292 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 10/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Wine Palooza (Eagan, MN): Funky for sure and I like it. Red currants, funk, earth, spice and floral notes. Medium plus finish. Interesting wine and solid. (2314 views)
Tasted by Mdubnik on 10/20/2023 & rated 91 points: Drank with the Turners. Did not seem to ever open up. Drank over 2.5 hours. Not sure if it was a bad bottle or what, but certainly didn't seem to live up to my usual Pegau expectations. (1945 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 9/14/2023 & rated 92 points: 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Horizontal (San Diego, CA): This wine feels like some weird collaboration style of oaked up/Parker-chasing CdP and rustic, funky barnyard CDP. And you know what? I am into it.

Ripe blueberries, ripe raspberrries, kirschwasser, mediterranean scrub, fermented cabbage, barnyard and maybe a hint of VA on the nose. It smells like there MIGHT be brett on this; but it's not intense enough to make me dislike it. Everything is integrated really well. Jammier on the palate where the fruits change into their over-ripe versions. Flavors of dried chili powder, ash, dust and smoke are added. There's a very light funk in the background of the palate, but it doesn't detract from any of the delicious flavors. Intensity of aromas is high, intensity of flavors is medium +.

Full body with medium + acid and medium + tannin. Nice lingering medium + finish too. This is a really fun wine to drink right now; but I feel it will improve with 2 more years or so in the bottle. It may mellow out and lose the funk. (2019 views)
Tasted by Alcofribas on 7/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Bold, elegant, pure fruit. The alcohol is a bit too pronounced for my taste, though it’s listed at only 14%. Drinking well now but still feels youthful. Not much in the way of tertiary flavors. Decanted for one hour. (2536 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 5/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Dark and deeply scented with Pegau's characteristic charcuterie-infused garrigue, bing cherry, sarsaparilla, Asian five spice, and full body. Glides across the palate with a sensation of immensity but without heaviness. (2633 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 5/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Great wine! Delicious, at the same time elegant and fruit forward. Fruits of the forest and leather. Medium tannins, medium acidity. Quite alcoholic, full bodied. Long finish, some complexity. Drinking now, will last for another decade. (2628 views)
Tasted by cincybt on 5/1/2023 & rated 93 points: My CT score shows 249 reviews. 😊 I have no new data! But I love this wine. Still has another few years, but only if you’re cellaring well. Showing slight browning on the meniscus, but pretty near peak. This is a CdP standard bearer and does not disappoint. (2779 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 4/20/2023: From the moment the Pegau cork cleared the mouth of the bottle, the wine delighted. It immediately perfumed the area and the small sip I took was incredible …. But I decanted it nonetheless. A bit bricked on the rim, but as the wine opened, the core was deep crimson. The nose exploded with tobo, cinnamon, smoked meats, lavender, crushed red fruits, and a bit of garrigue. The wine was seamless from nose to palate and once on the palate, was seamless from attack to the oh-so-long finish with a medium leaning full-bodied mouthfeel.
The St. Cosme …. Not so much. The color was fine but the nose and palate were tight but they never unwrapped their secrets from first sip to last. Something herbal presented itself, but nothing more.
Some sediment, but surprisingly little. 14% alc. With grilled stuffed quail. 04.20.23. Pegau - Recommended, but leaning toward Highly Recommended. No Recommendation made on the St. Cosme. (2416 views)
Tasted by tanduybui on 4/14/2023 & rated 93 points: It is a classical wine from CdP. Lovely aromas of black pepper, herbs, smoked dark fruits and some herbs. There is a touch of barnyard which will blow away after a hour of decanting. Medium to full bodied wine that has plenty of freshness to go the distance. Dark fruits, plums with fine tannin to linger on to the finish.

Drink now to 5+ years. (2452 views)
Tasted by MC on 3/30/2023: Second bottle from the case. Splash decanted 30 minutes. This was a winner - much better than the first bottle tried a few weeks back as it didn't have that roasted element on the nose. Dark red fruits, good leather and barnyard, and some grippy tannin on the finish that is not distracting but suggests this will hold for some time. Hope the rest are like this. A- (2326 views)
Tasted by chanote44 on 3/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Great funky Pegau nose. Well integrated with delicious fruit. Drink now and over the next 5 years. (2299 views)
Tasted by Rbhan12 on 3/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Brett alert. Buyer beware.

Tasted blind and nailed it as aged CdP.

Nose is very complex with barnyard, deep drying fruits, beautifully integrated. Kirsch, garrigue, maybe some type of spice that I can't quite point out. Palate is consistent throughout the attack, midpalate, and finish. A blanket a fine grained age-softened tannins coats the mouth. Has great acidity that elevates the blue fruit tinge to it. There is definitely old world aged funky character to the palate, which to me was borderline dominant. Muddled and very integrated, cannot easily separate the individual flavors. Finish was very long and true to the funky aged character.

Some consider brettanomyces to be a flaw, and I tend to lean in that camp. Drinking very well now. The brett on this wine was slightly bothersome to me, and this is not a wine that should be consumed on its own. Pair it with the right food and it will do well. I don't recommend it for the casual drinker either, the brett funk will throw off a lot of people.

Brett alert. Drink now and for the next 3-5 years. 92-93 for quality. (2389 views)
Tasted by Acove on 3/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Aired out for about an hour. The nose has some muddling red, black and blue fruits with primary and secondary aromas like raspberry, cranberry, stewed blueberry with some oak well integrated, along with kirsch, garrigue, spices. The palate was in fantastic balance and was medium + bodied with great acid considering the body and ripeness and also fine integrated tannins on the finish. Layers of velvety fruit tied together with refreshing acid. This was complex and eminently drinkable. An hour or so later this was showing some very unique purple fruits on the palate like loganberry and elderberry. It clearly has some time left in the bottle to improve. If you can, hold off 2-3 years but its wonderful to drink now. Maybe drink within 5 years so you don't miss the experience. My favorite CdP to date, and outrageous QPR. (2341 views)
Tasted by MC on 3/16/2023: PNP. First of a perfectly stored case. This is still young with dark red fruits and barnyard. Drinkable now but this bottle had some stewed fruit that was a bit off putting vs other bottles so hoping just an off bottle. B+/A-? (2308 views)
Tasted by WilD on 2/25/2023: Not sure if I should rate this wine. Nose is Pegau like. Very nice. On the palate initially burned rubber, ashes. Strange taste. Double decanted and wait what happens during the evening….. (2112 views)
Tasted by Rightbankrefreshment on 1/29/2023 & rated 87 points: Heavy barnyard on the nose upon opening, still not resolved after 2 hours. A deal killer for me. (2522 views)
Tasted by up4wine on 12/26/2022: I always enjoy this wine, but pairing with the Christmas ham was a bit of a stretch, and the Cristia was a bit better, overall. (2452 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
