Tasted by DBdeParis on 5/22/2023: Tracking with prior notes. Again this needed air to open up - aerating decanter to the rescue. Would say this has a mid-weight palate and is not developing any further richness with age. Remaining bottles going to the "drink soon" rack. (425 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 8/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Bee wax, lemon, apple cider, honey, flowers, very good complexity, little oxidation. Searing Chenin acidity cutting through the medium+ sized body. (1155 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 8/9/2022 & rated 91 points: Same bottle as collector. This was nice, golden color, clearly a fully mature white on the palate but no oxidization yet. The elevated acidity is nicely integrated and still provides good freshness. Drink up nevertheless (672 views)

Tasted by DBdeParis on 9/1/2020 & rated 92 points: Quite the experience - after 4 hours in decanter and with aeration. Disjoint and edgy after 3 hours, then filled out on the palate. Great texture and flavors. (1111 views)
Tasted by Milliontown on 5/21/2018 & rated 91 points: Slightly advanced perhaps. Golden colour. Still has plenty of concentration and acidity on the palate. Nice floral aromas, some honeyed, waxy elements there too. I really liked this but some others with more experience with Vouvray said it was a bit too far advanced for its age. (1932 views)
| Tasted by rikipedia on 11/28/2017 & rated 91 points: Terroir-istes International - France, Loire, Domaine Huet (The Fat Butcher, Stellenbosch): (Tasted Blind): Very deep gold to tawny/amber in colour, indicating its age. Captivating bouquet of barley sugar, undergrowth, almond paste, smoke, cold rooibos tea, earth, and damp chalk in a plastic box. It draws you in with its complexity. The taste reflects similar flavours and is dry with a beautiful, rising acidity that balances the fruit and provides drive to the mid-palate. With plenty of complexity and a persistent length, this is a cracking wine with excellent depth. Some felt it was tiring and it needed drinking up. Closes with wax candles, apples and salted almonds. | Tasted by HowardNZ on 10/23/2017: Wines at Thierry's place with Helen and Ben: Yellow gold. I guessed this as a mid 2000s Vouvray Chenin. A bouquet of greengages, lemons, rock melons, yellow and green apples and fresh herbs. Grapefruit and other citrus in the mouth. Some minerality and a hint of honey. Rich and tactile. Acidity is present but it's by no means roaring. Relatively primary for a 1998. Helen noted the 'phenolic interplay' favourably. Very good. (2500 views) |
Tasted by j45 on 10/3/2017 flawed bottle: I think there was some Chenin behind all the premature oxidation. (1981 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 1/1/2017: Dinner at Andrew's place: Served blind. Brought back from the Loire by Thierry. Deep golden colour. An attractive bouquet of preserved lemons and grapefruit, straw and hay, with a slight lactic edge. A lot of phenolic grip to this wine. A pleasant apricot kernel bitterness, with pineapple, limes and some lactic acids. Green apple malic acids yet to fully integrate. This is quite a big structured wine that has evolved but still has a long way to go potentially. I picked it as a 1998 Chenin, due to the bouquet. A nice mature wine but no hurry needed here. Edit: Thierry has said that he believes this wine was the 1999, not the 1998. (2860 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 5/28/2016 & rated 91 points: Medium gold. Melon, mineral and apple nose, light intensity. Elegant flavours and a hint of white pepper in the finish. Dry with only a touch of richness. (2371 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 3/23/2016: Much better than previous bottle. Gorgeous golden yellow hue with a citrus bouquet. The viscous palate had terrific depth and finesse and the wine finishes with considerable length. (1994 views)

Tasted by Monopaulp on 10/16/2013 & rated 85 points: Beautiful shiny golden hue, weighty, rich and soft palate. A bit to alcoholic at this time, seems a bit clunky, not much acid. Not gonna give it much thought right now. See where it goes after a few hours (3375 views)
Tasted by eoinhharkins on 8/23/2013 & rated 91 points: Sadly ,ynlast bottle, probablyy not the most exciting vintage for the vineyard, but the fruit here while bruised still comes across quite fresh nice acidity on the palate even if the fruit turns a touch sour on the finish (3069 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 6/18/2013 & rated 89 points: kind of bitter at first.. needs food. Bone dry and not a lot of fruit but plenty of wet wool. Was okay with fish. Maybe better with spicy food? (2757 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 3/31/2013: This bottle did not seem right. It was flat and very dry with almost no fruit> Bad bottle? Stay tuned. (2835 views)
| Tasted by missatiejacket on 1/28/2013: There's a little development coming into the scene now with this bottle, in the form of intensified wet wool, graham cracker, toast, and a bit of a dried nature to the otherwise still-fresh fruit. Fruits are reminiscent of lemon, green apple, peach, ripe pear, starfruit, and hints of pineapple, somewhat underripe. A wet stone minerality runs throughout. Ripping acidity provides a nice tension, and if any sweetness was ever apparent, it no longer is at this point. This is a lovely bottle, and I like where it is right now, because I like all of the freshness that remains in what really is a young wine which has probably only recently become as open as it is now. very good+. delightful. | Tasted by JeffnCin on 1/12/2013: This is a great wine to sniff, with a nose full of honey and sweet, musty hay on a late summer day. On the palate, the honey and any sweetness disappear. The hay provides a warm and inviting lead-in for what is a cutting, almost tart, citrus peel flavor. There is a touch of chestnut, which combined with the grassy aspect, brings to mind Long Jing (dragonwell) green tea. Burnt orange peel extends into mild herbs for a nice finish. It is an interesting wine to contemplate in the glass, but I suspect it would really shine with a beautiful vegetarian meal. (1896 views) |
Tasted by talentedwine on 12/24/2012 & rated 93 points: Once it opened up it was delicious. Not overly fruity but great complexity and a nice finish (1376 views)
Tasted by Troon on 11/19/2012 & rated 90 points: This wine didn't take long to open up. There was stone and lemon on te nose. The palate is more mineral with green apple. There is a nice acidity to the wine. The finish is medium. I'm really growing to enjoy Chenin Blanc. Especially bottles with some age. (1408 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 8/19/2012 & rated 89 points: My first aged chenin. Piercing acidity - austere is a good word for this wine. It feels like it wants to be rich and complex but just falls short. It did firm up with air, suggesting a decant would do it favors. I have no idea if further aging will pay off, but I still have a bottle, so why not? (1547 views)
Tasted by coremill on 1/16/2012 & rated 88 points: Must've been a root day.: The only decent wine of the night. Distinctively chenin with a woolly qualtiy, some citrusy fruit, a dollop of honey, and something I'm told is called "quince" (I've never figured out what that actually is). This is a bit dominated by the acid and it's on the austere side (although it's not particularly mineral), but it fattened up a bit with some air. I liked it, but this lacks the density of fruit one would hope for in a better vintage. (2447 views)
Tasted by TheBusiness724 on 1/13/2012 & rated 91 points: Austere, high-acid, but complex. Intellectually appealing if not hedonistically so. Pretty damn close to mature. Expressive and typical. (2321 views)
Tasted by Brian Kennedy on 12/24/2011 & rated 92 points: medium gold. a little bit of ox, but in a good way. complex, long finish. butter, baked apple, med acidity (2264 views)
