 Tasted by conviction buy on 6/22/2015 & rated 91 points: Garnet with bricking rims after more than an hour of bt breathing. Typical aged bdx nose, leather, tobacco, some peppery nose too after the fruit. More acidity driven in mouth, but sufficient complexity of fruit helped. Tannin resolved though slightly dusty. More oak spice at the finishing. (420 views)
 Tasted by chablis28 on 6/10/2015 & rated 93 points: For me this wine has peaked and perhaps now slightly past peak. Lovely aged BDX none the less and happy to drink it. Most of table mates preferred it over the 95. Two great btls side by side. This one was all resolved tertiary flavors. I enjoyed both vintages but slight edge to the 95. (750 views)

 Tasted by Bob H on 5/8/2015: I apparently had a bottle of this last December that I liked, but at this point have no recollection. The cork on this particular bottle was faulty, and after failing to get it out in one piece, I was forced to immediately decant the wine.

Color is still translucent ruby, but a shade or two darker than the '86. Great nose - fruit, smoke, wood scents - quite complex on the nose.

Smoother and more well-integrated on the palate than the '86, but on opening I'm not sure it's any more interesting. A lot more weight/presence, though. We'll see about "final grades" later tonight. (996 views)

 Tasted by Le croque bouchon on 12/20/2014 & rated 96 points: Robe brique et orangée. Au nez, le cabernet sauvignon est évident, cuir, vieux livre(?). Gouté après 30 minutes décanté, complexe, tannins fins et présents, belle longueur, encore du fruit, pomme brunie (oxydation), boisé léger. Bu sur 3hrs, le vin a changé constamment, très smooth... Très beau vin complexe qui a encore de la vie devant lui. De la collection Champlain Charest (bouchon imbibé, mais sans être mou).

Brick and orange. Nose shows obvious cabernet sauvignon, leather, old books (?). After 30 min decanted, complex, fine tannins, nice length, still has fruit, some browned apple (oxydation), light wood notes. Drank over 3hrs, changed constantly, so smooth... Very beautiful complex wine with still some life ahead. From Champlain Charest collection (somewhat wet cork, but not soft). (1674 views)
 Tasted by Bob H on 12/15/2014: Opened for dinner on Friday night, so this glass is about 72 hours after the cork was originally pulled. Color is still a murky ruby at the core, lightening out to translucence on the rim. Lovely nose with blackberry, tobacco/smoke accents and iron.

No hard edges on the palate, ripe red & black fruits, perfectly mature Bordeaux that it a pleasure to drink right now. (1648 views)

 Tasted by liber on 9/26/2014 & rated 96 points: 32 of 36 bottles, ullaged mid shoulder, decanted one hour, consistent fine notes with references to spiced baked fruit - this bottle the best yet, mid red, brown rimmed, lightening, engaging rich nose, fruit fresher than previous bottles and less baked, touch of caramel and chocolate, lovely mouthfeel, very long, sweet fruit, complex, balance seems to be improving, no rush to drink.  Tasted by slywka7 on 5/24/2014 & rated 92 points: Aged Bordeaux, Cali Cabs and more with the Benchmark Wine Group in Greenwich (The Ginger Man in Greenwich, CT): Poured out of a decanter but not sure how long it was in there. This had some nice fruit on it, especially the nose but definitely mixed in some mature notes. Got some nice notes of dried cherry, herb, mushroom, espresso and plum. Tough to really follow up the 82 La Mission but this held up honorably. Must have been a well stored bottle. Believe this still has a while to go. (3053 views)
 Tasted by KR66 on 5/11/2014 & rated 93 points: Characteristic 1982-portish nose, full of sweet and creamy ripe fruits, touch of herbs, some toffees, satin textured and balanced. Dense colour. There is still a tannic CS-core, usually promising a long future. But considering that body and finish are extremely lovely but only of middle (+)-length/intensity, this wine maybe starts drying out? On the other hand, the broad range of rating-points at CT and RP (94-99; Neal Martin 91) may indicate some bottle variations. Two more bottles from different sources availabe, so I will check again. Decanted 3 hrs before, back into cleaned bottle and drunk within 2 more hours. (2885 views)

(Restaurant Chez Christophe): Un nez de terre et de truffes, suave, qui n’emmenait en rive droite. La bouche est bien droite, il montre encore une bonne vigueur et de la finesse. J'aurais aimé un peu plus de chair, mais je chipote. C'est un très beau vin de style classique, à maturité. (2979 views)

Almost grainy brown fading to rim. Medium (+) intensity nose, almost port like, sweet nose. Medium body, not much fruit left, medium (-) tannins integrated smooth, massive finish. Probably past best. (3244 views)
 Tasted by BFG on 2/16/2014 & rated 93 points: This was out of a 375ml. Double decanted 2 hours before serving, it initially had some mustiness on the nose that slowly dissipated, revealing a classic Bordeaux aroma -- although a bit subdued. The palate was lovely, the tannins fully resolved but the fruit still present. This particular bottle may have been perhaps slightly past its peak, but still providing lots of enjoyment. (3063 views)

Nose: old cupboard, mushrooms, big, old style, I like this nose, this will last another 2 decades, iN my opinion the biggest nose of the night

Palate: oh my my absolutely delicious, an Old school Bordeaux, still big fruits on the background but in its prime now, lovely mature Bordeaux, my WOTN followed closely by the 99 Rayas. We also had the 2000 Calon which was delicious as well but still young & of course a more modern style. (2391 views)

A bit soft and need a bit more energy. Although there was a no flaw, this was not the best example of the 82 Calon. (3166 views)

Vintage Tastings, 1982 Bordeaux in Hong Kong (5/31/2012)
(Calon Segur) The 1982 Calon Segur was also quite popular amongst the crowd due to its ready, willing and able nature. Its nose was open and brothy with yeast, game and nut aromas. The palate was tasty and gamy, a bit more jammy than the others with lots of cherry flavors. The minerals and slate came out, and the finish strengthened (93).  93 points

Vintage Tastings, 1982 Bordeaux Retrospective at Age 25 (5/20/2007)
(Calon Segur) St. Estephe was next in line, beginning with an excellent 1982 Calon Segur (sourced from Chateau), which had a great nose. There was excellent t ‘n a, chocolate, cassis and blackberry in this singing wine. It also had edge, spice and perfectly singed beef aromas. I was loving this wine. In the mouth, there were peanut flavors and solid t ‘n a to this long and minerally wine, but the nose was so exciting that the palate seemed almost a touch disappointing. Cassis and olive flavors came out in this still excellent wine  94 points

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

St. Estèphe

Read more about St. Estephe and its wines Whereas the first activity recorded in Saint-Estèphe goes back as far as the Middle Bronze Age, the first vines date from the Roman Occupation. But it was the Bordeaux merchants who by aging and selling Saint-Estèphe wines themselves were largely responsible for this appellation's fame. And in the nineteenth century, noted for its prosperity, the great estates of today were created. The movement continues today with the merging of small estates.

A land of great wines, Saint-Estèphe is situated almost in the centre of the Médoc, close to the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is equidistant from Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave.
The beds of soil are characterized by their remarkable diversity, the result of their undulating relief and excellent drainage. Quartz and well-rounded pebbles mingled with light, sandy surface soil are found everywhere, giving the wines a distinctive finesse. And the subsoil is made up of the famous Saint-Estèphe limestone, which outcrops on the west of the commune.

Tasting
Thanks to ideal conditions of climate and geology, Saint-Estèphe wines are characterized by their sturdy qualities and robust constitution. Accordingly, they can be laid down for a very long time while yet preserving their youth and freshness. Distinguished by a subsoil which is more clayey than that in the other communal appellations which lie by the river, the wine here attains a distinctive individuality : a very rich tannic structure, a fine deep red colour and an exceptional backbone with aromas of great finesse.

Production conditions (Decree dated September 11, 1936):

In order to have the right to the Saint-Estèphe appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Saint-Estèphe, "excluding any parcels in that area which are situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
