Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Philippe_C on 12/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Strong smoke and black cherries, cigar box... A bit volatile acidity, but loads of leather and tobacco, light on it's feet, on the descent... (1214 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 2/15/2022: Sampled at Oinoscent in the morning, from a decanter that was left from last night
The wine shows fully deeloped brick red color, quite hazy.
THe wine shows medium intensity, earthy, forrest floor, dried red cherry, red currant, olive paste, a bit gamey, leathery, pot pouri, chocolate notes.
The wine is lean in the palate, earthy and dusty, dried red fruit, no tannins, medium acidity (that feels higher due to the absence of the rest), short coffee flavoured finish.
Although it was pleasant in the nose, the palate feels way past its time.
Still, always fun to try old wines (1508 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 2/11/2022 & rated 88 points: Popped and poured. Pleasant nose with tobacco, herbs, a little fruit. The palate is decent with black currant, tobacco, lead pencil and underbrush. There is a lack of fruit and vigour through as this seems to be in a state of decline. (1437 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 12/6/2019 & rated 92 points: Sous bois, green pepper, tobacco, earth, smoke and leaf. It blossomed in the glass with silky sweet red fruit. At its absolute peak. A lot of enjoyment. (3308 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Mitch on 9/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Served Double Blind at Ted's house in Ft. Collins. Light, pinkish color, exotic nose of red fruits, smoke, and a vague hint of Bordeauxishness. Really interesting wine at 34 years, still very lively but absolutely resolved and mature though seemingly immortal. I will nonetheless find a reason to open my one remaining bottle sooner than later. Smooth as silk with nary a rough edge to be found, overtly smoky on the palate, almost Pinot like body and mouthfeel. Very nice finish. (3008 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 8/24/2019 & rated 92 points: Sous, graphite, green pepper, and sweet dark fruit. Soft and resolved with lovely sweet fruit. Very enjoyable. (2616 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 7/24/2019 & rated 94 points: Another fun wine from our recent Capital Grill BDX dinner and the surprise btl of the night for me. This started out kind of lean and less rich than anticipated and almost dull. I had thoughts of dumping it for the first 30 minutes or so and then, I stuck my nose in the glass and this wine had regrouped and was coming on strong out of the blue. By the end of the night I went from eager to dump it to open to buying one of these online if I saw it pop up. This magically became a terrific example of aged Pessac with tons of cigar box, earth and faded berries on the nose. Silky and harmonious. A nuanced pure array of cherry, dark chocolate, pencil, tobacco and smoky scrorched earth and gravel. I ended up loving this btl that I nearly dumped. Thanks Steve! (2769 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 7/24/2019 & rated 94 points: Super Seconds and the Like (Capitalle Grille, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Really good, scorched earth on the nose, earthy, tar, great blackberry nose. Full bodied and layered on the palate, scorched earth, earth, graphite, a mix of red and black fruits, cassis, crazy youthful for 34 years. This can go 20 more easy. Loved it. (2754 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/30/2019 & rated 92 points: First bottle from an owc. Poured into a decanter to serve. Sous, graphite, clay and sweet berry fruit on the nose and palate. Silky and harmonious. A very soft and inviting wine from Pape Clement that really reflects the 85 vintage which I like a lot. (1584 views)
Tasted by JohnTheBastard on 3/31/2019 & rated 94 points: A fantastic wine, but definitely in the “drink now” category. The backdrop was still painted with the palette of Cabernet and Merlot, but the primary fruit characteristics were all but absent. The defining quality was a clean, almost austere alder smoke characteristic of Graves. We drank with an 85 Ahlgren Bates Ranch Cab for a new world/old world comparison, which was not primary by normal standards, but seemed a juvenile fruit bomb compared to the Pape Clement. The latter began to fall apart after about half an hour and lose it’s nuance, but continued to pair well with the meal for the three hours it took us to finish. (1394 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 1/21/2019 & rated 91 points: Jason's Guys Night - Bring Something You've Never Had Before (Jason's House): This was quite light, and had a lot of scorched earth, which was an odd combination for me. (1731 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Guys Night Out: Bring Something You've Never Had (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Medium dark red color. Excellent fill, saturated cork, PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. This had some bottle stank that had my worried at first, but it blew off pretty quickly. This is very mature at this point, though I can't say whether it is representative, and this bottle was probably better a few years ago. However, I found it very rewarding and offering a classic portrait of older Pessac wines. I was entralled by the purity of the pencil and tobacco notes, dark cherry and cassis with a smoky scrorched earth and gravel character. Barely medium body and quite sleek with fine tannins. I suspect I liked it more than most, but then I really enjoy these older complex and resolved wines that are not all about the fruit. (2060 views)
Tasted by Mentat on 6/5/2016 & rated 89 points: Perfect cork, mid neck fill. Not much fruit on the nose but instead it was cedar and tobacco. Palate was also consistent with tobacco leaf wrapped black fruit. This wine seems to be fading now, need to drink up. (4249 views)
Tasted by Man in Black on 12/7/2015: Medium tawny colour with some deposit. The nose is clean and fully developed, showing medium+ intensity aromas of cedar, tobacco, baked plums, very ripe black currants, black peppper and black olives.

It is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has medium+ fine-grained tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium body and pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long.

It is elegant, showing finesse and complexity, still keeping some freshness in the mouth. Well-balanced. (3686 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 11/6/2015 & rated 92 points: At a tasting: Bordeaux 1985 at age 30. From Magnum. Medium garnet, quite dark for the age still. Nose of mint, forresty/pine notes with dark fruit. Medium bodied, light on its feet, tannins are soft. Classic aged Bordeaux. A bit more rustic than today's Pape Clements. (5080 views)
Tasted by austinwinesalon on 2/21/2010: Definitive Bordeaux (Mirabelle Restaurant Austin, Texas): More to the nose, less to the palate than the 1966, this was a smooth, nicely balanced wine which "even has a little finish." A leaner, lighter style than the 1966, the 1985 Pape Clement had a "gorgeous" and "stunning nose," with one discerning taster identifying cinnamon, clove, all-spice, and rosemary, and another sour cherry and pencil/wood shavings. Remember when you had to change out the pencil sharpener shavings at school? Additional flavors of fruit, peppercorn, spices ("a cornucopia of"), black currant, and dark cherries were noted. "Good time 2B drinking this," "very 85," "damp forest floor," "lighter style," and "perfect example": this wine had its proponents. Billy said he was glad 2B here today. Thank the french pope. (10094 views)
(9030 views)
Tasted by Tartiflette on 12/11/2009 & rated 84 points: What a wonderfull nose. Stone and gravel, cherries and lacorice. The first 2 gulps was nice as well, but then it died. This was over the top, but aged with beauty. Very drinkable but should have been drunk 5 years ago. (6605 views)
Tasted by Rob MacKay on 2/5/2007: Opened on Superbowl Sunday. Cork was soaked nearly to the top and the nose was not really there. Taste was very green with very little finish. Either this was a bad bottle or this wine is well past its prime. No rating. (7171 views)
Tasted by bsherwin on 1/28/2007: Bordeaux on the Hudson (Peter Pratt's Inn): An interesting wine if not particularly enjoyable. It had the nose of a sweeter wine, but this was bone dry. There was a little nuttiness that spoke to a slight oxidation. I'm assuming that all that's left here is Semillon. Smoke 'em if you got 'em. (7466 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 12/24/2005: Little sediment. Deep dark red colour. Cedar, pencil shavings, graphite, slightly tarry, sweetly smokey nose deveoping into a really strong hickory smoke and bbq sauce. Bretty? Quite savoury and meaty on the palate, fat, viscous, long and lingering legs. Lovely and very different on the nose to the previous bottle a couple of months ago. Excellent (4296 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 9/3/2005: Good rich ruby colour, only slight garnet rim, far darker than 1990 Rioja Alta 904 reserva drunk alongside it. Pencil shavings on the nose, good core of sweet fruit, quite fleshy still with reasonable length. Not the greatest but very nice. (4303 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 6/8/2005 & rated 90 points: Gorgeous nose and palate on the immediate opening. Left for a while then drunk over cheese at the end of a dinner at home with friends. Continued to open up gorgeously in the glass and was very impressive. Mellowed and turned almost slightly sweet towards the end. Lots of fruit still and quite structured tannins. Think it will continue to show better over the next few years. Still looks like a youngish wine. Not as good as the Talbot '85 but very good indeed. Not rated by Robert Parker because it was the first year after winemaker Bernard Pujol moved in ( he produced a 91-point wine the following year). (4598 views)
Tasted by sdr on 3/1/1989 & rated 82 points: Medium bright ruby. Some oak. Youthful astringency. Not awful but fruit deficient. (1307 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
