| Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 145 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by bluepeter2020@outlook.com on 12/27/2023 & rated 89 points: Decanted for one hour. This bottle's acid was unbalanced and tart. (364 views) | | Tasted by mxpbuy on 10/8/2023 & rated 94 points: My last bottle and best one. Took a couple hours to fully open. Chocolate covered ripe blueberries, touches of vanilla Oak and some blackberries, very smooth with well hidden alcohol. (606 views) | | Tasted by mxpbuy on 7/22/2023 & rated 89 points: Wine's color showed no signs of age. After a few hours it still had a bit of grit and chewiness to the tannins, although generally smooth. The fruit was dense but disjointed. Seemed a touch cooked, but no plum or raisin notes. Perhaps an off bottle. Expected much better. (666 views) | | Tasted by dsimmons on 10/10/2022 & rated 95 points: Excellent Merlot. Still plenty of fruit plus secondary flavors. probably at or near peak. (1504 views) | | Tasted by DesMarteau on 8/6/2022 flawed bottle: TCA….bad funk that never blew off ! (1357 views) | | Tasted by cooker315 on 7/6/2022 & rated 95 points: Simply fantastic. Best Merlot I have had. (1254 views) | | Tasted by Simoncino on 2/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Delicious and in a good spot. (1814 views) | | Tasted by fdub on 12/26/2021: A bit tired. May have been an off bottle as was showing a bit of cooked notes. (1819 views) | | Tasted by europat55 on 4/19/2021 & rated 91 points: Nose: 90-91, Palate: 90-91. The nose was a little bit weird, but still outstanding (tasted blind). (2255 views) | | Tasted by dsimmons on 9/18/2020 & rated 95 points: Drank with pork loin roast. This wine is drinking well, Happy to have a few more for the coming years. (2255 views) | | Tasted by mactheknife on 8/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Based on previous comments, I chose not to decant. This was ready to drink from the start. Just a touch of funk on the nose, but it blew off quickly, revealing a beautifully aged wine. Lots of secondary flavors of herbs, tobacco. Still a bit of dark fruit. I think it is close to maxing out, so would suggest you enjoy now. (2045 views) | | Tasted by JackCali on 8/4/2020 & rated 90 points: Muted nose, minimal tannins, mild dark fruit, showing its age, drink up (1810 views) | | Tasted by slywka7 on 4/25/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 15 minutes. Aromas of dried plum, tomato leaf, boysenberry and huckleberry. Flavors of dried plum, dried cherry, cinnamon and touch of earth. Ends with a 30 second finish with plum and cherry notes. Probably waited a bit too long this as it was better in it’s youth. Still hanging on though. (2029 views) | | Tasted by mclanew on 2/22/2020 & rated 90 points: Three hour decant. Dark garnet. Nose of blackberries, fruitcake and spice. The palate is full bodied and very modern with lush ripe fruit with significant new oak influence. Black currant, touché of herbs and spice with some alcoholic heat on the mid palate. Does it evolve? Not clear, not convinced. Definitely a lot of stuffing so it will last. (1871 views) | | Tasted by Cosmo M. on 11/28/2019 & rated 94 points: I second Elink’s note from 11/23/19 — drinking beautifully right now with beautiful character and complexity of flavor. (1841 views) | | Tasted by WizardNeedsFood on 11/23/2019 & rated 93 points: Drink now - really excellent. Fig Newtons, black currants, sage, espresso, blackberry. Angular mouth, chewy tannins, big body. Medium finish. Great with steaks. (1790 views) | | Tasted by acyso on 11/10/2019 & rated 85 points: Kristin and Colin's 30th (Chicago, IL): This comes in a bottle that when empty has the same weight as a full bottle of normal wine. Pretty obnoxious. The nose definitely shows a lot of ripe black fruit and some pronounced plum tones. This could pass for a slightly modernist Pomerol, really. The palate is a little too sweet for my taste, and overall this is just too overripe for me. Fortunately, this isn't a wine obliterated by oak, so that's a saving grace. (2835 views) | | Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 11/1/2019 & rated 94 points: From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this 12-year-old wine is packed with dark fruit and is lusciously youthful. A blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, it was aged for 18 months in French oak (75% new). Opaque ruby/red, full-bodied, low in acidity and with tannins that have nicely integrated, it delivers a sizable payload of black currant, fig and Bing cherry fruit, accented with baking spices, licorice, pipe tobacco and cocoa. At the appropriate serving temperature, the wine's lofty 15.2% alcohol is not problematic. While those averse to oak will not be enamored, the wood component is not over-the-top for those who relish what it can add in the proper context. Rich and layered on the mid-palate and finishing long, this is an outstanding Napa Merlot. While it should never be compared with anything from Pomerol, the need to avoid the comparison is based only upon style and ripeness of fruit, not upon quality. This will last longer than previously estimated when last tasted more than nine years ago. Drink now-2027. (1861 views) | | Tasted by tomlee on 10/5/2019 & rated 94 points: Purple in color. 15.2% ABV. Sublime nose of black and blue fruits, licorice, violets and smoke. Full bodied, rich, plush and well balanced. Currants, cassis liqueur, plum sauce and black raspberries on the palate. The finish is long and seamless. Just a stunning Merlot that is drinking at its peak right now. About as good as California Merlot gets. Drink over the next 1-2 years. (1756 views) | | Tasted by tplskylrk on 7/15/2019: Delicious. Milk chocolate. Dark rustic lucious fruit. Depth. Secondary flavors coming now. Entering next 10’yr phase (1823 views) | | Tasted by Coachron13 on 2/6/2019 & rated 93 points: A terrific, big, bold merlot. If big, bold, new world wines aren’t your thing, you won’t like this one. Needed an hour of air to smooth out, was pretty jammy when first opened. Easily five more years. (2195 views) | | Tasted by DesMarteau on 1/13/2019 & rated 94 points: Thick, rich, integrated...silky fruit and lush. CA/Napa (2178 views) | | Tasted by Justinwine on 12/31/2018 & rated 88 points: a bit past it's prime. (2052 views) | | Tasted by dsimmons on 10/23/2018 & rated 95 points: Drank this bottle with friends. Delicious Merlot. I opened this an hour before drinking and another hour would have been better. The wine is super concentrated, complex and loaded with dark fruits, licorice and sweet tannin. Do not think this wine has reached its peak. Drink or hold. I love good Merlot and really think it gets a bum wrap. (2213 views) | | Tasted by jviz on 10/8/2018 & rated 92 points: camphor nose with some cherry softness and residual cough syrup fruit, this felt a little clunky in a lineup of right bankers and US counterparts. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). Winemaking Notes
The grape clusters were hand-sorted, and once de-stemmed, the berries were sorted again by hand on the way to tank. After four to five days of pre-fermentation cold maceration in small open-top fermentors, the fruit began 100% native wild yeast fermentation. Two to three weeks later, the fruit was gently pressed and moved to barrel where it finished primary and secondary fermentations. The wine continued to aged in 75% new French oak – a combination of Taransaud and St. Martin barrels – for eighteen months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes
“The complex and mouthwatering nose features blackberry compote, black raspberry and milk chocolate. Juicy yet firmly structured with sweet tannins, this focused wine is approachable young yet will evolve gracefully with time. A complete wine in every way.” – Erin Green, Winemaker

MerlotMerlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.USAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
