Tasted by hargy on 9/22/2018: the fruit has not survived - dead and wooden - not rated (2058 views)
Tasted by hargy on 11/22/2017 & rated 91 points: really quite delicious although the tannins still dominate - will the fruit survive? (2486 views)
Tasted by Edv on 7/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Beaucoup de saveurs, un nez harmonieux, une souplesse, une élégance... j'aurais aimé en avoir une autre bouteille. (2777 views)
Tasted by jayrod on 3/15/2014 & rated 92 points: Very elegant wine that paired wonderfully with lasagna. Decanted for an hour before serving.

Very dark in the glass with reserved fruit and a wonderful bouquet (5516 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 3/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Started out tight on the finish but with 2 hours it was much better. Not sure if I love it but went well with Italian dinner. Next bottle decant for an hour. (4765 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 11/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped, decanted for mild sediment, poured and drank. Deeply purple to slightly blood colored in glass. clear and clean, and definitely showing its age already. very ripe perfumed nose of black berry fruit, flowers I can't put my finger on, and a slight eucalyptus note which is very appealing. The acidity from the sangiovese remains at a medium level, which balances the ripeness of the cabernet well, and some soft tannins are felt on the mid pallet. blackberry, under-ripe plum, tobacco/cedar flavor lasts for a well balanced finish. I agree that this may have been better in it's youth, but this is balanced, and quite enjoyable to drink-up now. (4599 views)
Tasted by jannevaro on 7/7/2013 & rated 90 points: I also agree with other writers. Wine is soft and round and it does not have the lenght it used to when young. Good wine but I would prefer more tightness and structure (4788 views)
Tasted by PBG on 11/22/2012 & rated 92 points: Still drinking well. Consistent with previous notes. (5066 views)
Tasted by PBG on 8/18/2012 & rated 92 points: This was our second bottle. Decanted for 3 hours. This is drinking very well and continued to open up through out the evening. Still like this a lot but we only have one bottle left. (2823 views)
Tasted by Villon on 12/22/2011 & rated 91 points: Beau vin assez élégant et boisé luxueux, mais finale assez courte. Somme toute décevant compte tenu du prix. (3616 views)
Tasted by Alcide23 on 10/22/2011 & rated 92 points: Once again a nice bottle. Smooth and silky. Hints of vanilla and dark berries. Very enjoyable. Decanted 30 min prior to drinking. (3714 views)
Tasted by Sethbo11 on 9/18/2011 & rated 91 points: Excellent balance of Cab and Sangio fruit on the nose and palate. Not sure if it is worth the money but a great bottle. (3404 views)
Tasted by dannyk8232 on 4/25/2011 & rated 92 points: Needs lots of air, then opens into quite a beautiful drink. Nice acidity and overall balance. Would I buy for $50? No (2955 views)
Tasted by PBG on 1/17/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted one hour and could have used at least one more. Deep dark red, almost purple color. Vanilla, dark berries, cherry and tobacco on the nose. Taste of dark berries, cherry and a hint of vanilla. Soft and supple finish that lasts a good while. Very soft integrated tannins. Served with some very well made veal dishes. Highly enjoyable. (3073 views)
Tasted by willthethrill on 7/15/2010 & rated 90 points: Very elegant medium/light body wine. Dark ruby red. Smooth dark berries....I just didn't like the burnt earth on the edges, and especially at the end. Enjoyed with V and C at Caravaggio. (4148 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 6/22/2010: decanted 90 minutes, consumed over 2 hours. Aromatics of leather, cherry, embers and earth lead to a medium + body that never really gets out of the gate. Restrained fruits, medium acidity and a conspicuous lack of complexity (at this price point, or any other for that matter). Sure, it's smooth, to the point of being gulpable, even. I just don't see the raw materials for anything remarkable given extended cellar time. Perhaps it was bottle variation, but I'm glad I didn't drop the $50. Many other Tuscan wines at half the price delivered twice the value that night.

Tasted by Alcide23 on 2/9/2010 & rated 91 points: Smooth, silky, too strong on the vanilla. Not my type of wine. Dring next bottle in 2012 (3874 views)
Tasted by sonakul_t on 11/30/2009 & rated 90 points: same as previous tastings (4298 views)
Tasted by loverboy on 3/15/2009 & rated 90 points: Venturi and decanted 30 minutes prior to drink.

Opaque deep red color, with tons of blackberries, dense cream and caramel. Big in mouth with harsh but sweet tannin. Too young but very enjoyable. (4713 views)
Tasted by Anders C J on 2/15/2009 & rated 91 points: Great supertuscan blend. Decanted 4 hours, still not enough. See my previous note. (4694 views)
Tasted by chrismillerpdx on 1/25/2009 & rated 95 points: Better than the 2003 at this point in its life. (4634 views)
Tasted by Anders C J on 12/1/2008 & rated 91 points: Wonderful Supertuscan blend. Had it with Scaloppine milanese and a tomato & basil & vinegear julienne. Very rich and dark red wine with a nose of cassis, violet and blueberry. Great palate delivering excellent on the nose with a smooth string of chocolate on top. Great round tannins. However needed extremely long decanting - 3 hours was not enough. Will improve over coming years. (4740 views)
Tasted by dannyk8232 on 7/23/2008 & rated 91 points: Notes from memory.

Rich, dark red in the glass. Really took a couple hours to come together. Blueberry and violet on the nose. Smooth, silky palate filled with cassis, raspberry and chocolate which is complemented nicely by an herbal finish surrounded by round tannins. I cannot recommend decanting enough...this will take time to come together in the bottle.

Brancaia

Producer website

U.S. Importer?

Casa Brancaia was founded in 1981 by the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer. It is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. The vineyard experienced a quasi vertical takeoff, as it already won with the 1983 vintage won first place at a major Chianti Classico tasting. This rapid success is the friendship with the Mazzei family, owners of the famous Castello di Fonterutoli owe. In their cellar, the wines of Casa Brancaia were pressed up to the 1997 vintage and expanded. Since 1998, the wines in their own, vinified using the most modern principles built cellar. The management of the property taken over in 1999 the daughter of Barbara Kronenberg-Widmer and her husband Martin Kronenberg. They are supported by star winemaker Dr. Carlo Ferrini. La Brancaia is already one of the flagship company of Tuscany and receives for its wines every year national and international awards. Brancaia Casa also has a winery in Maremma. From there comes the Ilatraia.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
