Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 89 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by JCGuthrie on 4/18/2020 & rated 92 points: A nondescript, almost funky nose blew off to reveal honey on the nose, with a hint of dried herbs. Dark caramel and butterscotch on the palate, with subtle notes of tart green fruit, balanced by generous (and surprising, given the vintage) acidity. This was a really fun bottle to try. (795 views)
Tasted by Tsliwinski on 6/17/2016 & rated 93 points: Good CA chard Has life (2657 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 5/30/2014 & rated 93 points: This wine took me a bit by surprise, not because I was expecting it to be bad but because I was not expecting it to be so good. Deep gold in color. Honeyed aromas of marigolds, candied lemon peel, ripe peach and nectarine, poached pears, and unsalted butter. Lithe and seamless on the palate, well balanced, with a refreshing lick of lime-accented acidity on the finish. I really couldn't have wished for a better showing for this wine. (4569 views)
Tasted by research1 on 6/18/2013 & rated 90 points: rich and still all there (5019 views)
Tasted by dnjones on 8/14/2011 & rated 91 points: Not as good as other vintages. The following is a commitee tasting note. Deep golden color. Nose of pear, melon, peach, grass and butter. On the palate hints of honeydew melon, pear, green apples, and lemon zest, really comes through at the end. Good acidity and does well with food. Had this with Sea bass, with a buttery balsmic reduction and it went really well. Medium to long finish, much better as this warms up in the glass. Drink chilled and you lose the complexity. (6645 views)
Tasted by RR47 on 7/10/2010 & rated 91 points: Similar to notes of 2009, but off a tad. Past its prime, but still appealing complexity. A nutty, mineral finish. (6574 views)
 Tasted by GZ3 on 3/3/2010 & rated 90 points: PDG (5331 views)
Tasted by yonster24 on 9/4/2009: Just had one glass of this. Nice goldon color to it. Nose of pears, oranges and maybe some almond? Very tasty as the citrus really is coming through but not taking the wine over at all. Oak lingering in the background keeping the citrus in check. Excellent finish with the acidty keeping this bright and lively. (4182 views)
Tasted by RR47 on 8/16/2009 & rated 92 points: Drinking (and enjoying) since release and down to a few bottles. A light yellow color, nose of a blend of citrus, pears, slight oak and a slight nuttiness. This has been a food chard, nice acid and fruit balance, still has good length on the finish. One of Shafers best chard's IMO. As expected, not as fruit forward as when young, but now has some nice complexity to it. Went perfectly with a chicken piccata dish. (3616 views)
Tasted by janb on 7/3/2009 & rated 93 points: fantastic bottole of wine..still lots of fruit- buttery = rich... (1760 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 4/18/2009 & rated 90 points: Not as good as previous bottles, but still very good. Notes of orange blossoms and pears and whisper of hazenuts. Retains a very crisp acidity due to blocked MLF. (3500 views)
Tasted by thalf on 3/9/2009 & rated 91 points: Very nice Chardonnay. Smooth, full flavor and rich color. Subtle fruit and non-overpowering oak. (3725 views)
Tasted by Tejano on 12/28/2008: Light to medium gold and again nice elements of citrus components with the underlying and more resolved touch of oak. Good, but light and crisp entry that had a well balanced grip and texture of taste at mid palate with the fruit up front and in harmony with a nice edge of oak and acidity. Holding its own very well. (3455 views)
Tasted by Gfritzh on 12/27/2008 & rated 94 points: A wonderful wine with a terrific balance of fruit and acidity and a long, fresh finish. (3478 views)
Tasted by sumshark on 8/16/2008 & rated 93 points: Same as before. (3704 views)
Tasted by smphelps on 8/2/2008 & rated 91 points: Very appealing golden color. This is a well balanced effort with a nose of pineapple and pears followed by a more citrus lemon, lime, orange finish. Lots of depth, nice acidity leaves a clean finish. (3610 views)
Tasted by Tejano on 5/22/2008: Medium gold color and a light tropical nose showing elements of citrus with a very light oaky backing. Nicely resolved balance of fruit and oak with a light viscosity grip showing an nice light sense of butter that did not over shadow the fruit. Drinking well right now. (3770 views)
Tasted by BigTarheel on 5/11/2008 & rated 90 points: Very nice CA Chard ... med-body, bright and clean. The oak, fruit and acid are well balanced. The palate is creamy but not buttery with citrus, fig and hints of plantains. The color was golden and the alcohol was balanced. The nose is very inviting ... as expected another strong wine from Shafer. (3827 views)
Tasted by sunalsorises on 1/21/2008 & rated 93 points: Excellent. Layers of fruit balanced with acidity on the finish. (4182 views)
Tasted by sumshark on 1/21/2008 & rated 93 points: Drinking great now, complex nose and palate, and a long finish. (4285 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 1/19/2008 & rated 93 points: Dinner at Pinot Provence. Notes of orange peel, orange marmalade, and poached pears. Very nice acidity and perfect with my Hamachi appetizer. Refined and precise. This wine actually performed better than the 2005 Aubert Ritchie I had the previous week. (4040 views)
Tasted by thomaskeil on 12/18/2007 & rated 91 points: This was spot on. Tropical fruits and melon with a dose of citrus (which I didn't note last time). Seemed less buttery and oaked this time as well. Stll with bright acidity and a touch of minerals. (3873 views)
Tasted by winefool on 10/26/2007 & rated 92 points: WS NYWE California Chardonnay Tasting (Marriott Marquis): Medium yellow color. Pale aroma of mineral and green lime. Nice bright yellow fruit with good acidity. (4033 views)
Tasted by ove on 9/10/2007 & rated 96 points: My last bottle, a shame since it was the best I've had. Just the right balance between fruity flavours and acidity with a nice buttery and oakey note. Classic Chardonnay, one of the best as far as I'm concerned. Wow! (3897 views)
Tasted by sumshark on 7/24/2007 & rated 90 points: Similar notes as last time. (4078 views)

Shafer

Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.

Chardonnay

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros

Straddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties.
