| Community Tasting Notes (average 94.3 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Miceri on 12/26/2020 & rated 95 points: Golden yellow; next to no nose to begin with, over an hour or so opening up with subtle quiet pear and vanilla; nice and fresh attack (amazing given 23 years old), other notes say that fruit is gone - correct - but nevertheless really nice, rounded, light honey, well-balanced, long quiet but still intense concentrated aftertaste; one of the best older north Rhones tasted and no hint of oxidation / sherry whatsoever; worth the wait! (1610 views) | | Tasted by hargy on 10/22/2020: no bouquet and the fruit has faded to almost nothing - not off, just gone - not rated (1497 views) | | Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 4/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Three hours in the glass before it started to sing. Very nice balance with a subtle amount of grapefruit that emerges mid way through. Unmistakably Rhône. The finish lasts a good 60 seconds. All around good and certainly unique. No primary fruit left and this should hold for as long as you want. Easily another decade. (1753 views) | | Tasted by peternelson on 1/31/2020 flawed bottle: Way gone. Heavily Oxidized. At least the '06 was showing very well. Heritage Wine Blind Tasting Challenge Finals at Jean-George Las Vegas (1786 views) | | Tasted by CloserIam2Wine on 12/31/2019 & rated 92 points: Bought from the producer in the early 2000s and stored in the Eurocave. Decanted for an hour and sipped over the course of the evening. Full marks for balance and complexity- honey, almonds, white flowers and a hint of baking spice. Very litttle primary fruit on the palate though I could coax a little pear I suppose. Medium to medium plus intensity and length which although fine, was not mind blowing. Overall a lovely 22 year old Hermitage Blanc that is best enjoyed withing the next few years. (1634 views) | | Tasted by jkoenen on 8/16/2019 & rated 98 points: Oh... My... God... This is what aged white Hermitage is all about... rich, fresh and full of life! Honey, dried fruit, umami and minerals. No signs of oxidation. Absolutely fantastic. (960 views) | | Tasted by Burgundynick on 2/11/2019 & rated 92 points: I think the bottle was pasted its prime, it was challenging because there was so much going on. Nuts, sherry, citrus, oranges and a richness and fullness that was amazing. 92 points (954 views) | | Tasted by Aravind Asok on 11/18/2017 flawed bottle: The !*show (Spring (Downtown Los Angeles)): Painfully corked, sigh. (1555 views) | | Tasted by pbaek on 5/10/2017: It's hard to describe the flavours and aromas of this mind blowing wine. There's so much joyful complexity here: almonds, acacia flowers, orange marmalade, citrus notes, earthy marks, spices - it all comes together and blends into a wine in perfect balance with both incredible richness and freshness at the same time. Probably the wine of our boys trip for me. Served with Brandade. Thank you Niels. With Niels at Kandestederne. (1648 views) | | Tasted by Curiosovino on 8/8/2015 & rated 95 points: A truly unique wine. At first there are aromas of fermented apricot and apple, a little like armagnac, but without the heavy alcohol/spirits quality. The flavor really comes forth after about 30 minutes in the decanter. A rich, ponderous wine, more for winter sipping along with a little foie gras. (2654 views) | | Tasted by aquacongas on 7/29/2014 & rated 98 points: dark golden, petrol, honey, tertiary aromas, yeasty, wood, nuts, marcipan, great density and depth, never endig finish, at the peak, potential for 10 more years, my best dry white wine so far, great to quail, holds on for hours (3635 views) | | Tasted by jkoenen on 4/26/2014 & rated 97 points: Game and wine ('t Jachthuis, Eksel): Unbelievably complex bouquet, rich and voluptuous, yet highly detailed and refined. Coppergold in colour, alcohol is beautifully wrapped in eminent fruit and luxurious nuances of evolution. Fantastic... (3333 views) | | Tasted by Zweder on 4/26/2014 & rated 97 points: Golden, almost orange color. Dried apricots, honey, caramel, butterscotch, minerals, beautiful fruits, some beautiful oxidized flavors which add to the complexity, beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity, concentrated and a great length. A truly great wine. Completely ready now and probably the next decade or longer. Great stuff! (3125 views) | | Tasted by Argrath on 1/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Fully mature, compact nose. Extremely powerful with very elegant oak aromas, apricots and a quite wonderful floweriness. Very pleasant, this wine smells as a sweet wine... Very odd, totally unique taste. Spicy, well-evolved, fully mature and full body. Lacking in acidity, the generous fruit of apricots and banana makes up for that. Very long finish. Fat, round, oily and almost off-dry. This is a unique wine, this is an odd wine, and I understand those giving it higher marks. Compared to other White Rhone, that is understandable. But in my book this should be compared with great Burgs, and great Rieslings, and then it will always lack the backbone and the elegance. (2471 views) | | Tasted by Stefanos T. on 10/21/2012 & rated 96 points: Again an out-of-this-world wine from Chapoutier! Soft, round creamy with seamless oily texture, clean and in perfect health. Nose was stunning with chamomile, herbal tea, rotten apples, almonds, floral honey, beeswax and fruit like peach. The wine enters the palate with the light touch of water and yet the wine is massive. Acidity is as low as being unnoticeable and yet the wine is majestic. Flavors are so intense (and yet subtle) that can pair with any dish. We had it with porcini rissoto and the combination was made in heaven. (2761 views) | | Tasted by RJMerlot on 5/13/2012 flawed bottle: Heavy oxidation although perfectly stored in original wooden case. (2486 views) | | Tasted by alittle on 3/24/2012 & rated 92 points: The Northern Rhone Dinner (Chave, Jaboulet, Chapoutier, Rostaing, Tardieu Laurent) (Patrick's House): Popped and poured, followed for about a hour and a half. Golden colour in the glass. This is by far one of the most interesting white wine noses I've had the pleasure of smelling, showing fresh cut strawberries, apricot, honey, citrus, fresh rain water, mineral, fruit pits, brown sugar, salt water, soil, tea and melon. On the palate, honey, apricot, citrus, mineral, saline and tea. Really nice and lightweight, considering the intensity on the nose. Still really fresh, despite having emerged on the oxidative end of it's journey. Moderate finish, with some nice bitterness and reasonable acidity, which balances the minute bit of sweetness in this wine. Again, this may be a preference thing bringing down my score, but this wine is incredibly well made and complex. (3710 views) | | Tasted by emkc on 7/11/2011 & rated 94 points: deep golden colour. fully matured. drank immediately after the cork was pulled. Full bodied. Buttery. Great nose of berries, melon and almond. Long finish. Drink up now. (2663 views) | | Tasted by G Kapoor on 3/6/2011 & rated 88 points: Nice nose of orange marmalade, honey, and white fruit. However, the palate was thin and the finish was short with a slight lemon zest taste. (2793 views) | | Tasted by saturnaisland on 11/27/2010 & rated 96 points: This is an outstanding wine. Rich honeyed white fruit flavours but not cloying. Complex and interesting and elegant. A revelation. (2160 views) | | Tasted by Miceri on 2/12/2010 & rated 86 points: Deep clear yellow colour; nose of honey, sweet; in the mouth flat, petrol-like, little hint of sweetness; little aftertaste; disappointing (2317 views) | | Tasted by danstrings on 5/29/2006 & rated 98 points: As mind-boggling of a white wine as I have ever tasted. Paired with an ethereal dish--slow roasted halibut (apple wood on the grill) with fava beans and sweet corn "reduction." Wow, I could write for hours on this wine. Golden honey color. Reticent at first, but honeyed white truffle begins to emerge. Then after about 15 minutes in the glass riper fruit. Powerful but elegant on the palate, with loads of honeyed sweet tropical fruits. A huge white truffle note throughout. Glides across the palate and keeps you reaching for your glass over and over. Two hours later it had opened even further, deepening all of the above comments. Whoah!!! (3517 views) | | Tasted by danstrings on 12/15/2004 & rated 96 points: Birthday dinner La Folie SF--what a stunner! Amazing balance of richness and ethereal lightness. Tiers of honeyed orange blossom, glacee fruits, white truffle honey... (3446 views) | | Tasted by peternelson on 6/7/2002 & rated 95 points: Weiner: Darker yellow; big nose, toasty, minerally, hay; rotten wood, vegetal undertones, med-heavy body, little acid, long fin. The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)
Regional History: Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.
• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.
• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.
•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).
• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
