Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jacek P on 3/25/2024 & rated 93 points: This is probably one othe top Hungarian reds. Really worth to try. Typical french grapes : Cabernet Sauvignon, FRanc and Merlot. Full body, deep and rich in taste. Complex and elegant. Well balanced with remarkable finish. (50 views)
Tasted by Guy Libot on 10/4/2020: Worth the waiting. Mellowed but still quite a bit fruit remaining together with minimal tertiary aromas. (892 views)
Tasted by Guy Libot on 11/10/2019: At first, it seemed I waited too long and the wine seemed disjointed but after a 2-3 hour decant, the balance came nicely together into a deliciously matured wine. I remember the force and alcohol of the wine when it was young but this has dissipated and all melted together in a silky texture with soft tannins. (1002 views)
Tasted by ttholst on 9/8/2019 & rated 89 points: Over toppen modningsmessig. Plommer, fiken, søt tobakk. (1104 views)
Tasted by Guy Libot on 11/13/2016: Can still last somewhat. Tannins still need to melt further. This bottle a bit unclear. (3070 views)
Tasted by ttholst on 8/19/2016 & rated 90 points: Veldig god duft med begynnende modningsaroma. God men litt svekket fruktighet og halvmoden smak, moderat minus tannin, fløyelsmyk munnfølelse. Litt fremtredende alkohol. (3309 views)
Tasted by Guy Libot on 12/23/2015: Still quite powerful with good fruit. Also quite a bit of alcohol at 15% though although not overpowering. Quite a bit of residue so decanting is advised. (2615 views)
Tasted by palbe on 10/25/2014 & rated 90 points: Deep violet with garnet edge. Cassis, coffee, cedar and earth. Rich, almost juicy mouthfeel. A little short. Very competent Bordeaux-style blend, but clearly suffers alongside the Mouton 82, which is an unfair comparison. (3820 views)
Tasted by ttholst on 9/20/2014 & rated 94 points: Luftet 1 time i karaffel. (3957 views)
Tasted by Ldelbar on 8/18/2013: To vic van dam (3716 views)

Tasted by Chrispx on 6/24/2012 & rated 91 points: Very good structure strong tannins but also Strong fruit. (1726 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 4/25/2012 & rated 88 points: TN: Wines from Eastern Europe and Greece: This was easily the red WOTN garnering six first place votes among the red wines. It retails for $60, more than twice any other red, so it was nice to see it finish first. That said, I find no value here and for the money, there are lots of other wines I like better from other places in the world. This is a Bordeaux blend. Purple in color. Tight at first it opens to show an earthy yet fruit filled nose. Black raspberries mostly with some black licorice. Juicy on the palate, it has a bit of complexity and some tannins. Cassis and a bit of anise on the finish. A very good wine. (5194 views)
Tasted by Chrispx on 3/25/2012 & rated 93 points: Very nice rich strong flavors this is actually the 2008. I would definitely buy more of this. (1811 views)
Tasted by petterib on 1/15/2012 & rated 94 points: Kopar fortsetter å imponere. 2007 er fortsatt ung, og har mye potensial for fortsatt utvikling. Flott, mørk frukt Solbær, røde kirsebæ, tobakk og lær! (4419 views)
Tasted by ttholst on 11/25/2011 & rated 93 points: Mørk rødfiolett farge, Lukt av mørke bær, litt søtlig med ett hint av gammel tobakk? Svært fruktig smak av lett søtlige mørke bær, moderate men tydelige tanniner. Lang deilig og balansert smak. (4131 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 10/24/2011 & rated 91 points: Hungarian Tasting Extravaganza from Blue Danube (Boulette's Larder, Ferry Building, San Francisco, California): Very dark red violet color; focused, tart currant, cedar nose; tart currant, cedar, raspberry palate; needs 4-5 years; medium-plus finish (single vineyard, field blend; 54% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon) (2850 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/2/2011: Austrian and Hungarian Wines (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Medium ruby but looks thick and glycerine. High toned and herbaceous. Sweet, concentrated cassis fruit, chocolate, prune and definite alcoholic heat. Large scaled wine with tannic finish. Overdone and internationally styled. (3952 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/2/2011 & rated 90 points: Austrian and Hungarian Current Releases Tasting (K&L Wines, San Francisco, California): Dark red violet color; rich, plum, ripe cassis, ripe berry nose; tight, ripe currant, cassis, tart plum palate with good balance and firm tannins; needs 5-plus years; medium-plus finish (single vineyard, field blend; 54% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon) (2941 views)
Tasted by TimmyR on 3/26/2011: Nice intense cherry red. Left bank Bdx style nose, cassis, cedar, vanilla. Also some tobacco and black pepper. Medium full body with lots of dark fruits, chewy tannins and good acidity. Nice structure and balance. Medium long enjoyable finish. Very well made, but the magic is missing. Excellent wine nonetheless. (3189 views)
Tasted by dke on 1/16/2011 & rated 90 points: California vs. Europe (Bordeaux blends) BLIND TASTING: The nose had some poop to start with (more link skunk) but that blew off after 15-20 minutes swirling (wined was double decanted first) and show more dark brooding component. On the palate it showed a sweet fruity entry with some earth and dark fruits. Little tar and earth, quite vibrant and young. This was second favored of several tasters, and was mid-way in the lineup for me. Good wine. 90-91, it would be interesting to try this in a year or two. This is darker and richer than 2006 but at this point not as nicely integrated. Guessed Dominus. (3763 views)
Tasted by TTROLL on 12/23/2010 & rated 91 points: Nice dark brick red colour and is it already a Brown touch in the colour? Nose of vanilla, oak and purple berries. Nice soft tannins and an elegant taste of red fruit and a touch of plums and vanilla. Rather long taste as well. (3621 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.
