Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by drjb on 6/10/2021 & rated 93 points: This was a pristine bottle with a fine green gold colour and a nose of white peach, pear, oatmeal and honey. The palate is well rounded with lovely complexity of fruit characters and a persistent minerality on a finish that shows excellent grip and persistence. Its an elegant bottle of classic Meursault with lots of character. (925 views)
Tasted by Whisky&Wine on 4/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Lovely bottle consistent with past notes. No major evolution since I last tried it. I really enjoy the mikulski style. Nice acid and lift with a buoyant and rich finish. (1187 views)
Tasted by Whisky&Wine on 1/11/2020 & rated 91 points: Lovely bottle of meursault. Light straw gold in color with a refined nose, this is the lighter in flavor and more elegant of the two 2010 mikulski wines. Tried this side by side with the perieres last night.

Nose of beeswax, citrus and flowers. Light on the palate with nice citrus acidity and flavors, light oak and some minerally notes. This is a very delicate wine. A bit more concentration would have yielded a higher score. (1244 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 6/12/2019 & rated 93 points: Light yellow. Crisp nectarine, apricot fruit. A hint of toasty oak. Very delicate, demure. Really tasty now. Not even a hint of oxidation. One more bottle will patiently wait for another year. (1521 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 3/8/2019 & rated 92 points: Confirming my previous impression, this is still a beautifully balanced, although maybe light, chardonnay

Elegant, exquisite, are the operative words. (1421 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 5/11/2018 & rated 93 points: Bright light yellow. Ripe white peach, apricot and lemon notes. A dose of toasty oak on the finish. Still has plenty of balancing acidity, although I'd probably start drinking these up over the next 2-3 years. (1335 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 11/12/2017 & rated 92 points: Restrained nose

Soft oak touch on palate, elegant, would have liked a little more overt acidity - but that is just a niggle on a lovely chardonnay (1397 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 10/4/2016 & rated 92 points: More evolved than the 2010 Comtes Lafon Charmes tasted alongside. Ripe, almost exotic fruit notes; layered, generous and powerful. Notes of spices and minerality. Nicely balanced on the palate, maybe fading a little towards the end of the tasting. Very intense and long finish. Drink or keep. 91-93 (2082 views)
Tasted by Papies on 10/4/2016 & rated 93 points: Meursault with James Handford (Handford Wines, London): A touch shy on the nose and would have loved some more aromatics to go with this excellent palate. Very elegant wine, lightest touch of oak, good and polished acidity, limes, citrus feel, young but very much a classy wine. Lovely finish too. (2500 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 3/4/2016: The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2016 (The Fairmont, San Francisco): Yellow. Toasty pineapple. Ripe entry, quite a bit of acidity behind it though. Better in the mouth than it smells, but this is ultimately plagued by too much wood. (2539 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/4/2016: La Paulée de San Francisco - The Verticals (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Tasting, brief note. This is very good, even better than I thought when last tasted in 2013. Clearly ripe orchard fruit with some tropical hints, but great spice, acidity and structure to maintain great balance. Very good for its level. (3268 views)
Tasted by BAGWAF on 2/15/2016 & rated 92 points: Better than the previous bottle I had broached a couple of years ago. This held its own against a rich cream soup and enticed a former Swiss ambassador, used to the luxuries of life, and a banker friend, into rhapsodies. I was less fulsome in praise, but by no means critical. This is now showing well. I am not sure it has the structure to develop further but will watch with interest (1408 views)
Tasted by Gargantua on 3/9/2013: La Paulée de New York 2013 (Metropolitan Pavilion, NYC): Similar subtle acid and mineral nose to the Charmes, but with greater intensity; this sports a more noticeable oak at this point, but is nevertheless in a balanced position. Great. (3367 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/9/2013 & rated 92 points: La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Tasting. Also showing lots of lush fruit with tropical elements and lots of spice. Rich and powerful start, more elegant and styled finish. (3879 views)

Domaine François Mikulski

Producer web site

Francois Mikulski is not your typical Burgundian. His father fled Poland in 1939 to join the French resistance and married a French woman after the war. Francois was raised in Belgium but from a young age became enamored with the life of his uncle, Pierre Boillot, who was making wine in Meursault. As his uncle had a few hectares of vines and children who didn’t want to work them, everything was in place for him to dive right into the vigneron métier. He's spent significant amounts of time internationally, studying winemaking across California and Oregon and travels extensively to exchange ideas with fellow producers. His labels resemble simple writing on a chalkboard, lacking the regal crests and old-fashioned fonts that adorn most in Burgundy. He has slowly and meticulously expanded his holdings to a little over 8 hectares, and his vines are old, and often exceptionally old.

Though his whole story and presentation is somewhat radical in this most traditional of regions, the only thing radical about his wines is how outrageously pure and delicious they are. He uses at most 20 percent new oak, even on his best cuvées, and seeks restraint and minerality above all else. His style is most often compared to Roulot, perhaps the most revered producer in Meursault, and whose wines sell for three times the price. The wines are almost always under 13% alcohol, and their weightless power and sheer intensity is unable to be replicated in other Chardonnay growing regions. The 2010's are exceptional wines from a vintage that was made for Mikulski’s style. If you can summon the strength to let these settle over the next five or ten years, you will be handsomely rewarded. There is so much magic to come from these bottles. --Manhattan Wine Company mailing

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
