Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 64 notes)

Tasted by mike l. on 6/30/2020 & rated 95 points: what a delightful wine. clean pure balanced, tight yet lush. vibrant yet complex. insane value. this is why nahe riesling and donhoff is soooo good. (1638 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 5/30/2020 & rated 90 points: One to chew on!
Great balanced mouthfeel, so yammy the tasty stonefruit, still some sweetness remarkable, but the lively acid keeps it fresh, will improve for 5+ years more easily, **(*+) (1950 views)

(2115 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 6/20/2018 & rated 87 points: Too sweet and one dimensional for my taste. (2220 views)
Tasted by Jonathanmustang on 3/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Nez floral, pétrolé, poires asiatiques, fruit exotique et quelques épices
Superbe riesling allemand

Tasted by StainedGlass on 5/26/2016 & rated 87 points: I've tried several bottles over the years and have generally been disappointed. Tropical fruit like pineapple and lechee but insufficient acidity to balance it out and I discern little minerality. While it is inexpensive, I find it too one-dimensional. I'll give the remaining bottles more time. (3145 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 3/12/2016: Riesling Blitzkrieg by FC1910; 3/11/2016-3/12/2016 (Teatro Campos Elíseos - Bilbao): I know it is just a 'warm up lap' but in my modest opinion is horrible with all the scattered elements and with a hollow feeling not fill anything.

(4322 views)
Tasted by tairanosaurus on 12/3/2015 & rated 92 points: Very nice Kabinett. On the nose, cold steel and prominent floral. Initially on palate robust mix of cold fruit, with some petrol and emerging hint of candied spice. Acidity more prominent over time. Nice long finish for Kabinett. Qpr extraordinaire (3439 views)
Tasted by lquam on 11/15/2014 & rated 90 points: Light straw color with medium viscosity. Lively acid. Asian pear, lime, and some tropical fruit flavors. Solid acidity with a hint of petrol on the finish. (3800 views)
Tasted by CADomer on 10/3/2014 & rated 90 points: Great QPR. Tasty fruit, lively acid, a touch of petrol, and nice minerality. (3853 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 5/17/2014 flawed bottle: Corked. Little fruit, odd nose. (2987 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 4/26/2014 & rated 91 points: Loads of acid and mineral, slate. nose of limes, apples and maybe something tropical like lychee. Floats effortlessly on the mouth. I wish I had more. MMMMnnnn.

I am thinking some Quince -Asian pear as the most dominant flavor after lime, which lays the acidic backbone. I really wish I had chose something else. Excellent! (3150 views)
Tasted by ucbeau on 4/19/2014: Great QPR. Stone fruit, limes, river rocks, and a touch of something exotic. Medium-plus acidity. Excellent mouthfeel, the acidity lifts the fruit and creates wonderful layering. (2755 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 12/30/2013 flawed bottle: Another dubious cork; nearly completely soaked, only a year or so after release. What a shame to take some the world's best Rieslings and let them fade under corks that don't actually seal. If reluctant to invest in good cork, why not just use screw caps and end this terrible waste? (2506 views)
Tasted by DougLee on 12/1/2013 & rated 89 points: Almost clear white. Nose of citrus, applecore, and flint. Grippy and sweet on the tongue but not in the least overbearing. Refreshing acidity with mineral spine. Moderate finish. (2380 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 11/20/2013 & rated 88 points: Third bottle. Cork in good shape this time. Not as bright as it was on release, but given an hour to breath and warm up a bit its opens up nicely. 88-89
Three bottles left. Will probably open another soon and hold the last two a a further 2-4 years. (2088 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 10/31/2013 & rated 92 points: Still amazing that a Nahe wine in the hands of a modern master can have such chiseled definition, wonderfully sectioned fruit and a nice balance even at this young stage. Pear, lemon, tropical fruit scents and a less minerally, more oily backbone than the Mosel wines, this is good for drinking now or waiting 5 years+. (2067 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 10/23/2013 flawed bottle: A little worried about this bottle - ill fitting cork? Bottle opened after two hours in the fridge. Half the cork is soaked - unusual for a bottle that is only 1 year after release.
Anyway, doesn't seem to be as focused or precise as the first bottle we had last year. (2310 views)
Tasted by Saint-Exupéry on 9/21/2013 & rated 91 points: Pale yellow. Very clear and precise yet complex nose. On the palate excellent fruit definition, marked acidity and a refreshing, mineral finish. What a great, classic Kabinett! (1929 views)

(1871 views)
Tasted by dzitt on 7/13/2013 & rated 89 points: À peine coloré. (1636 views)

Tasted by Sotto325 on 6/27/2013 & rated 93 points: In addition to the stellar early drinking 2011 vintage for kabinett comes a surprise from the Nahe-- fully expressed juicy well defined fruit with a great acid backbone and no excess or viscous sweetness. Jumps out of the bottle with a vivacious fruit explosion, lemon, peach, quince and floral scents. First rate! (1767 views)

Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/2/2013 & rated 89 points: Expressive nose, ripe fruit, floral. Very precise and focussed, low acidity, could be a touch fresher, medium finish. (1851 views)
Tasted by Papies on 5/2/2013 & rated 89 points: Donnhoff Riesling Masterclass, with Cornelius Donnhoff (Handford Wines, London): Light petrolly nose, ripe fruits “very 2011 in style” to quote Cornelius Donnhoff. Young and primary of course. 10% alc and with 40g/l of sugar. Feels like a spatlese due to its lower acidity. Richer but lacks that light beauty of a Kabinet. 88-89 (2969 views)
Tasted by SouthernStateofMind on 4/17/2013 & rated 93 points: Pale lemon in color. Oppulent green apple and honeyed aromas abound with enticing wisps of nutmeg and allspice present. On the palate tart green apple prevails with nicely integrated flavors of beeswax and tropical lime on a granite base. While RS exists here the finish is steely cool and refined in comparison to the racy Spatlese tasted previously. Great summer wine! (1788 views)
Tasted by RayOB on 3/26/2013 & rated 93 points: Drank at Davy's

Cracked open a bottle to see how it was. What a sup prise, remarkable stuff, still very young with a small effervescence. Lots of minerality with a great balance, lots of complexity and a lovely length.

How can this stay so cheap? (1920 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 3/4/2013 & rated 91 points: Consistent with prior tasting notes. Full of tart apple and having a lime acid complementing a great mineral backbone. The RS level when warmed can be felt and it tastes very much like Spatlese that has been declassified. This has enough power, acid and mineral to last for a very long time. It would be nice to revisit in in 15 years, but I doubt I will have that kind of patience. A stunning qpr from donnhoff. (2466 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 2/9/2013 & rated 89 points: see previous item Gr. R. 890: really very fine stuff, this inciting buoyant making lightness of a highclass Kabinett......;-) very fine acidity, felt in love again........drink this young now or after being cellared for a decade or more.....88- 90+ (2118 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/24/2013 & rated 92 points: 2011 Vintage Germany and Austria: Terry Theise and WineWise/The Vienna Wine Company Trade Tasting (Fort Mason Conference Center, San Francisco, California): Very light green-tinged yellow color; appealing, lightly savory, ripe green fruit, lime nose; focused, tightish, ripe green fruit, lime cream, mineral palate; medium-plus finish 92+ points (1466 views)
Tasted by Matt Neel on 1/16/2013: Deep straw. Lots of petrol/hydrocarbons on nose. Too much, really, as that character obscures whatever fruit would be showing up on the nose. On the palate, very firm acidity -- finally! Good weight. Quite mineral on the palate and on the decently long finish. Good wine. (Second flight, #1/3WOTF) (2199 views)
Tasted by gilrbo on 1/7/2013: Very pale yellow, clear.
On the nose pears, but also very airy floral notes, and delicate aromatic herbs.
On the palate it starts sweet with quinces on a background of subtle bitterness, reminding of lemon zest. It has crisp acidity and surprising flavor intensity from entry to finish. It finishes very long on an orange note, with a chalky texture. Wow!

Tasted by ovenmitt on 11/4/2012 & rated 90 points: Very light golden, almost clear. Nose of pear, honeysuckle, green apples, and ginger. Same notes on tasting with a real nice balance. Punches way above its price.... Wish I had more. (2243 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 10/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Lots of apple. Very precise. As sweet as one might expect from a Kabinett with 10% alcohol. The first out of a case of 6; just released. Next bottle to be sampled next year. Excellent value for money. Benefits from some air, give it 30min+ and don't drink it too cold. (2261 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 10/26/2012 & rated 90 points: Red and green apple, tart pear; minerality. Medium-long finish. Overall, a nice wine, but too rich (like a dry Spatlese) and acid is not as bright as I would hope for a young riesling. (2111 views)
Tasted by oolah on 9/16/2012: A little too plush and showy for my tastes. Definitely off-dry and good minerality but very full. Like a key- lime pie. (2137 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 9/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Very clean and crisp. Pear, peach, apple, citrus. Slightly off-dry. Medium plus acidity, medium body, medium-plus finish. Paired really well with a sweet-and-sour creole shrimp dish. Drinkeable now or for many years to come. Very good QPR. (2093 views)
Tasted by Champagneinhand on 8/19/2012 & rated 91 points: Much more full in texture than the wines of the Mosel. Beautiful nose of pear, white pitted fruit and some sweet apple and tropicals as this aired out. This was excellent with a good acid backbone. If I can show will power I may be able to age a bottle of this for 10 years, but I doubt it. Donnhoff rocks! (2358 views)
Tasted by Gargantua on 6/20/2012: Visit to Dönnhoff: 10% "Frog pond". Spicy--pretty mineral nose, very fresh apricot character with a pronounced weight. Really great acid. My third favorite of the tasting. (1951 views)

(Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett) ($26.00) It’s in the Dellchen family of savory “dark” flavors, though more explicit than the often riddlesome GG. This one is fervidly aromatic, brioche and caramel and maple sap – though the palate is on the dry side. +

Dönnhoff

Producer website

U.S. Importer (add'l info)

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not ofen designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on about 99 percent of the l bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is usually unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently. Although, just to be confusing, David Bueker mentions that there may be one or two exceptions, especially in 2001 and 2003 vintages, where Donnhoff produced "white capsule" auslesen from the Leistenberg and Dellchen vineyards (later Dellchen auslesen have gone to the gold capsules - e.g. 2006). To have to list my notes on a Cellartracker page that has a non-necessary and meaningless 'gold capsule' designation is highly irritating for me, as I feel that if I list it correctly it won't even be picked up by a search.

Another example of the confusion above is with the frequent multiple bottlings of Eisweine from the Brücke vineyard. There were at least three bottlings in 1998 and three in 2002. They occur when prolonged cold snaps allow harvesting on successive days. Usually one of these is designated the 'regular' Eiswein and the best one is sent to the Auction. Each typically has a different style. They are informally referred to by the day of the week on which they were harvested. Thus in 1998 there was a 'Samstag' Eiswein, and one for 'Sonntag' and also 'Montag'. The last named is extremely powerful, and extremely expensive; it is the Auction lot.

It is STRONGLY URGED then that when referring to Dönnhoff wines one refers to the AP number If this terminology is not used, identity can be impossible to determine. JHT

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Nahe
