Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 62 notes)

Tasted by canan on 10/1/2022 & rated 93 points: 50th Birthday Tasting (Vesterbro): Starting to show a lot of age but still with the characteristic acidity push in the aftertaste. Lovely wine (763 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 2/26/2022: Weekend at Bernie's; 2/25/2022-2/27/2022 (Vero Beach): Stunning. Contender of the top champagne and really of one of the top wines of the weekend. It's not really showing much age yet but it is super interesting. There's layers and layers. Mostly that kindof spicy notes which I don't think of in a BdB but which this had in spades. Elegant. Not sure in the long run this doesn't beat out the '80 DP but for this moment in time the extra 19 years prevailed for me. (1448 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 12/31/2020: Around the fire. More Honeycomb than the 96. Real cold from the snow. Still holding strong. I’d give it another 5 years, but tops now. (1373 views)
Tasted by Wine_Poobah on 10/31/2020 & rated 99 points: Baked apple, lemon, cotton candy, honeysuckle, and yeast aromas. Ripe green apple, strawberry, and coconut flavors with tons of minerality and chalkiness. Extremely complex tertiary aromas and flavors. Fantastic, racy acidity that carries the wine. Rich and dense with a super smooth texture and extremely fine bubbles.

You could age this for a few more years, but not sure why you would — it’s really fantastic now. (1436 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 3/10/2019 & rated 90 points: From magnum it was fresh and airy, ethereal, like a spring wind. Initially it had some vegetable and cucumber notes, but they morph into white fruits and some bready notes. What I didn't like was - it lacked the depth on the palate, probably the result of not so good a vintage. Elegant overall, but not a showstopper. (1938 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 12/28/2018 & rated 97 points: Sadly my last bottle of the '99 Peters, and the best it's ever been. Most of the flavor features I noted in my last bottle last year are still here, but the fruit has thickened even more to the point where you could call it luscious and golden, while still holding on to plenty of racy energy. It has a dazzling array of flavors and aromatic sensations beginning with that sumptuous and stock-dense fruit, segueing to cereal grains and coriander-like spices, and finishing with a vividly slate-like and metallic minerality. This was always an interesting wine but age has enriched it to a bona fide Salon-like experience. I didn't expect that it still had more upside to go from last year, but it's gotta be at absolute peak now - Champagne doesn't get much better at any age. (3807 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 11/5/2017 & rated 94 points: Maybe the best vintage of Chetillons (then called Cuvee Speciale) for drinking right now. I even preferred it to the '96 from a few weeks back. Expressive aromatics of flint, metal grindings, and toasted wheat. A layered palate: first comes the lemony fruit on the front end, then toasty cereal. There's more toastiness on the finish which also features something starting to hint at nuts. This is probably drinking at its peak now unless you are waiting for it to taste affirmatively old. But right now, it offers a lot of personality with fruit that's still bright and lush. (5623 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 1/22/2017 & rated 92 points: SCCM Conference; 1/21/2017-1/25/2017 (Honolulu, HI): Golden color; nice slight oxidation and excellent white fruit with a bit of apple; palate is balanced, medium-plus acid, drinking well now and I would not age further as it has some mature character already. A pleasure to try this tonight! 92 (3094 views)
Tasted by Tree512 on 11/7/2015 & rated 94 points: Finally ready to go. A big and full Champagne with lots of roasted nuts on top and a base of strong fruit. (3561 views)
Tasted by Yapdiver on 6/6/2014 & rated 95 points: The wine looks light gold colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like a little apple, a little flowery, alcohol and bread. It tastes like a hint of bread and is slightly sparkling. The body is light/medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (4539 views)
Tasted by Yapdiver on 11/1/2013 & rated 90 points: The wine looks Light gold colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like a hint of Apple. It tastes like Oak, a hint of alcohol and Butterscotch. The body is Light. The wine has Smooth texture and is very creamy. The wine finishes Short. (4771 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 3/12/2013: Had an almost bretty meatiness to its aroma. There were biscuit and bread notes coupled with citrus fruits. It was rich and creamy with good line and intensity. (4895 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/27/2013: This is pretty darn incredible champagne. And still in its absolute youth. Rich and brioche mid palate but clean and precise, and then a very high toned and wild white flower aroma up front. Amazing length on the finish. (4403 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 1/7/2013 & rated 90 points: This botte drank more like the first TN I wrote... minerally, focused, no malo, no oak, moderate at best autolysis... lacks a bit of depth IMO but for its style is excellent. (3444 views)
Tasted by french16 on 7/5/2012: A great bottle of Champagne here. Really benefited from air, it showed impressive depth, definition and focus. Subtle nuttiness, strong mineral spine, yeasty with lively bubbles. Light buttery notes, not showing a particular fruit but maybe a hint of lemon and orchard fruits. Somehow powerful but balanced thanks to this great minerality and decent acidity.
Only the finish is a little short but this Champagne will surely improve. Really loved it ! (2742 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 3/11/2012: Waterford Staff Party 2.0 (Waterford Wine Co., Milwaukee): What a treat!! Reaffirming why this is one of my favorites. What was once an in your face-ness of brown lees notes, (ie marmite, etc), is now really into a salty and mineral tunnel. Absolutely, KAPOW! on the palate. (3985 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/11/2012: Aged and wonderful. (2408 views)
Tasted by KC Bloodlines on 2/12/2012: This was great. Very yeasty, almost cheesy aromatics with some freshly baked bread, apple pie, ginger and stone fruits. (3234 views)
Tasted by Employee500 on 12/31/2011 & rated 93 points: Wow, from magnum this is fantastic. My prior bottles (750s) were lean and sullen, and it may be that I drnak them far too young (almost 5 years ago), but now this is a beautful champagne... (2474 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 9/22/2011: Lemon curd and sugar cookie. Really edgy right now. Starting to get a little honied, but great edge. Like LemonDrop candy on my tongue. Outstanding tonight. (2547 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 8/29/2011 & rated 88 points: Was not quite as impressed this go around... wine felt a bit softer to me with a little less grand cru firmness... this bottle seemed more at its peak to me having lost a bit of verve. (2537 views)
Tasted by canan on 6/16/2011 & rated 92 points: BYO (My House): Kind of funky nose with chicken broth, coffee grinds, seaweed, sea water and sulfur (gun powder).
A solid palate with both green and red apples with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Still quite fresh palate but the fruit is somewhat compact and dense. (1717 views)
Tasted by ktrh on 6/5/2011 & rated 89 points: Extremely nice nose. In the mouth excellent precision, acidity, concentration and superb minerality. However, it was surprisingly short. (not a faulty bottle) (2628 views)
Tasted by Sotto325 on 12/31/2010 & rated 92 points: In magnum at perfect drinking. Elegant and very well balanced. On the dry side for chardonnay but this is the best PP I have had. In 750 it will not be drinking as well. Medium bubbles, not too toasty but nice viscosity and well balanced acid (2968 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 11/18/2010 & rated 90 points: Lemon and vanilla, brioche and earth. Nicely refreshing palate, medium bodied. (3004 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 10/3/2010: (mag) Nice fine mousse, fresh baking croissant, appley. I enjoyed this. (3013 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/4/2010: Showing just beautifully now. A real stunner with the balance of older Chardonnay toast and butter and acidic freshness. (2821 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/4/2010: Wonderful right now. (3243 views)
Tasted by markjanes on 2/22/2010 & rated 90 points: Kobe Burgers and New World Wines (Reno, NV): Deeply colored, yellow gold rim, very fine mousse. On the nose plenty of citrus/green apple, seashells, and toasty autolytic aromas... no oak aromas. On the palate quite dry with very high acidity, low palate weight, no creaminess. Good balance, length, and intensity... ok complexity. Good finesse and texture... very Le Mesnil. Overall a firm, non-malo, non-oaked, mineral driven stlye with good depth of flavor that has several more years to improve, gain depth. (3987 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 2/19/2010: Arthritis Foundation Connoiseurs' Room (Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee): splits the difference, waffles between the brown leesy side and that more elegant sugar cookie. seasidey all the way. salty air. palate shows crystalline sweet dough and bright violet flower with a knock out backside. (4223 views)
Tasted by riccodog13 on 12/23/2009: Dominated by toast, yeast, mineral and caramel. Nice body and long finish with vanilla and caramel flavors. Showing strong oxidative notes leads me to believe this was an off bottle. Didn't show the verve or cut I would expect. No rating. (3661 views)
Tasted by Macki on 10/7/2009: Very rich on the palate - nose of fermenting yeast. Personally I prefer the NV blanc de blanc , but everyone seems gaga over this one. (3847 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 10/7/2009: Champagne (Waterford Wines Milwaukee): sugar cookie in the nose and on the palate. lovely bright acid. where have those talkative leesy notes gone???? (3841 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 8/5/2009: Right out of the gates a massive herb and chalk complexity on the nose. Vinus, refined, incredibly rich on the palate but with grace. (3558 views)
Tasted by Joe_Montana on 7/4/2009 & rated 91 points: El triplete merecía abrirla antes de tiempo. Visca el Barça !!! (3667 views)
Tasted by Russell Faulkner on 6/1/2009: Drank quite well, but a slightly reductive note I couldn't get too happy with, will open anoter soon. (3759 views)
Tasted by TVirtanen on 5/23/2009 & rated 89 points: Interesting single vineyard, color of straw, nose of oak, red apple with some cinnamon. Taste wide, round, finishes with unexpected acidity. (3761 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 4/22/2009: Pre-Tinariwen @ Sam's (Casa Vinz): Again, great leesy notes on the nose suggesting robust yeastiness, say marmite. the palate shows such big grand cru fruit. this has got the weight. (4068 views)
Tasted by ericis on 1/26/2009 & rated 92 points: nice pure nose. very focused. enjoyable. still young. (4452 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 1/18/2009: EWG Bordeaux with Flannery and a couple Champers (Tom Altmayer's): Blatantly Blanc de Blancs showing doughy citrus with a pure rich character. This had a terrific smooth mouth feel. A lovely Champagne with plenty of time ahead of it. Excellent. (4562 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 12/29/2008: Champagne Tasting (Waterford Wines Milwaukee): 100% Mesnil, Disgorged sept 2005, dosage 10g/l
Wonderfully expressive nose of vegemite/marmite. Drinks without notes of toast. I'm finding quite a bit of citrus in the palate. Love this wine. (3848 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 12/29/2008: Flowery perfume with salty criossant notes. This is beautiful wine. Tense, sinious, virtuious, impeccable and young. And tight and blistering clean. A bargin at $80. (4084 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/20/2008: Spectacular once again! (3481 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 8/14/2008 & rated 92 points: Popped for 3rd wedding anniversary. Dark yellow in glass, nice effervescence. Very fruit and floral driven nose, think ripe stone fruits, ripe apples, hints of flowers, touch of biscuit. Medium plus in the mouth, nicely concentrated. Tasty and fruit driven, especially for a blanc de blancs. A touch of sweetness is met with a pronounced acidic backbone...yet the fruit really pushes through and definitely wins out. Seems open for business, especially after 30+ minutes of air. I have little experience with aging champagne but I would think a bottle of this will improve in the near to mid-term and may be at it's best after another 12-18 months in the cellar. Great to toast with on our anniversary! (3935 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 8/3/2008: Faced with the double whammy of having to clean the house and take care of two boys (ages 3 and 5 months and, alas, my own), I knew I needed to open something serious. I opened at 9 in the morning. I will have you know that I didn't get seriously into until 1 pm (nap time) and now at 3 it is at its best.

This champagne is the way Comte de Champagne should be. Richly honeyed, but with flowery hazelnutty notes. A zippy yet somehow silky mid palate. Truly delicious. I need it in magnums. I believe it is around $73 a bottle and if that is the case it is desperately worth it. Compare this single vineyard vintage champagne to A.) Krug's new single vineyard Le Mensil relase at a silly $1,500+ a bottle or B.) another Tete de Cuvee from a large champagne house. The Peters is clearly a better wine and at half the price. Why not upgrade your drinking for something cheaper? (3316 views)
Tasted by Dejzan on 2/1/2008: Fresh and very acidic with beautiful exotic fruit. Good length, built for many years to come. Great wine. (3420 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 10/13/2007 & rated 90 points: Fabulously expressive nose of toast, sweat, and chicken skin, with the fruit beginning to take on the complexion of bottle age, but so screechy and austere to drink that this is a Champagne you need to cellar. (3660 views)
Tasted by Employee500 on 3/30/2007 & rated 88 points: Austere--lean, crisp and drying. Needs some serious time to richen up a bit, or the right food where this kind of acidity can be pleasing. Save for 2015 (3397 views)
Tasted by Employee500 on 2/13/2007 & rated 89 points: A little leaner and more tart than the '98....easy to drink but not rich or yeasty enough to create excitement. (3327 views)
Tasted by winefool on 12/31/2006 & rated 93 points: Really wonderful small grower champagne. Lovely rich fruits, made in a more fruit-driven than toasty style. Great stuffing and good acdity. (3460 views)
Tasted by futronic on 11/11/2006 & rated 89 points: Dinner w/ The Highdesertwines, Pinot/Pinto Envy et al (Chateau Chang, Victorville, CA): From magnum. Light-medium gold colour. Aromas of biscuit, oatmeal, lemon, and jasmine. Medium-bodied, lovely mouthfeel, with lemon, apple, and yeast notes. Short-moderate finish, 25s, with white fruit and lemon. (4417 views)
Tasted by Tree512 on 8/23/2006: Incredibly closed. Unrateable. Do not drink until 2015. Coaxable aroma of hazelnut oil, a little bit of citrus, a little bit of flower, but mostly a very closed bottle of White Burgundy with a couple of bubbles. (3014 views)
Tasted by Russell Faulkner on 6/20/2006 & rated 92 points: Barolo Offline: Spicy bread pudding nose, nice balance, great pure chardonnay, never going to be a great Peters but perfectly pleasant. (4417 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 6/16/2006: Barolo Offline, Caldesi, London (Caldesi, London): Yeasty, bready nose. Seems to have quite a high dosage. A little harder and more acidic than the Lilbert. Still needs a while longer. 2. (3882 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
