Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 50 notes)

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/6/2022 flawed bottle: Slightly corked (868 views)
Tasted by UMRich on 1/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Was a little concerned that the CT window ended 2015 and most recent note posted in 2016, but shouldn't have been. Beautiful cab with great balance of fruit and secondary, savory notes. Tannins fully resolved, great with food or on its own. (876 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 5/15/2016 & rated 93 points: At home with steaks, decanted for about an hour, drank over 90 minutes. Last bottle from a well preserved stash, finishing out a weekend of tasting the 2001 Napa vintage

From prior notes: "Dark ruby color, no visible signs of age. Nose was dark berries, allspice, floral and herbs. Nice aroma on the decant, still very full and rich. Palate repeats with black fruits, blueberries, cedar, cocoa, burnt sugar. Medium mouthfeel, long finish"

This is a well aged wine at full maturity, really drinking well, hitting all the secondary notes. Tannins are smooth and refined (3496 views)
Tasted by magic2coop on 1/11/2015 & rated 91 points: Aroma of huckleberry and incense. Licorice and chocolate - deep, rich. Not much longer - drink up. (4167 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 11/19/2014 & rated 94 points: With Valerie and her pals on a weeknight visit...purchased this at release from the vineyard, was time to revisit, first wine of the night. PnP, drank over about an hour

Dark ruby color, no visible signs of age. Nose was dark berries, allspice, floral and herbs. Nice aroma on the decant, still very full and rich. Palate repeats with black fruits, blueberries, cedar, cocoa, burnt sugar. Medium mouthfeel, long finish

Really nice wine that's aged beautifully. In a good spot now, was WOTN for a couple guests...my guess is it drink at this level for another 5 years....good stuff (4343 views)
Tasted by apounds on 1/24/2014 & rated 95 points: Hard to criticize this wine. Good aromatics, flavors, and mouth feel with a long finish (4860 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 11/3/2013 & rated 90 points: Very unique nose, with a freshness that I wouldn't expect from a 12 year old Napa cab. The palate has a good amount of acidity, along with tangy red raspberry, black cherry and a smoky mesquite note. Long finish. Definitely more old school CA than modern in style. (4723 views)
Tasted by gavinesq on 9/13/2013 & rated 90 points: Hints of wintergreen and cedar over soft tannins and lean, moderately ripe fruit. Had it with a steak. (3023 views)
Tasted by WilliamF17 on 8/31/2013 & rated 91 points: Decent fruit, moderate body, smooth, good balance, at prime. (1799 views)
Tasted by dtirsell on 8/19/2013 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Slightly orange, earthy color but exploding raspberry nose, smooth, long finish. Slight acidity but a mid-sized fruity blend that matched perfectly with tri-tip. (2227 views)
Tasted by FPNova on 4/21/2013 & rated 92 points: Still drinking beautifully...hints of vanilla, with subdued red fruits and cedar...wonderful! (2395 views)
Tasted by falbi on 12/23/2012 & rated 94 points: Owned this wine and let is sit for a few hours, soft and balanced with solid fruit. We were very Impressed! (1309 views)
Tasted by tnb on 11/7/2012: most awesome bottle I've drank in a long while... (2733 views)
Tasted by rdfeibleman on 11/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Drank very well, wish I had more. (2426 views)
Tasted by BlancdeBlanc on 3/19/2012 & rated 94 points: Aroma: dark berries, allspice/anise, floral note Plate: Decanted for about an hour, Delicious, a little asparagus, red licorice, smooth, cedar, subdued fruit, cocoa, blueberries. We had it with chicken satays and spicy peanut sauce and it matched surprisingly well. (2643 views)
Tasted by WI WineLover on 2/4/2012 & rated 89 points: Decanted for two hours. Seems to be very simple...not much complexity. Not bad, but not spectacular. (2561 views)
Tasted by edm on 1/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured. Ruby red with no signs of bricking. Aromas of caramel and brown sugar followed by sweet red fruits and hints of vanilla, mocha and cedar on the palate. A real charmer this one with plenty of legs left. (2422 views)
Tasted by GT3Mike on 1/1/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted for two hours, and was wonderful. Drink now - I can't imagine it will get any better at this point. (2196 views)
Tasted by BTEMEN on 1/1/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 2 hours and drank with Prime Rib dinner w/family. Grat first bottle for the new year. (3035 views)
Tasted by emf on 11/28/2010: This was a beautiful bottle of wine that needed time and air. Showed some age at first but time revealed the aromas and taste of fruit. This bottle continues to evolve with fruit, chocolate and cigar box. It had a long lingering finish. Very good. (3134 views)
Tasted by stevenp22 on 11/10/2010 & rated 91 points: Matched with a rib eye and potatoes. Very good needed time to open up but very nice after aboiut two hours. Still very good the next day. (3248 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 7/14/2010 & rated 91 points: This wonderfully layered, smooth and complex Cab is drinking wonderfully today but will still age well. The taste greets the palate with flavors of wild cherry, kirsch, cassis and a hint of anise. (3352 views)
Tasted by RJandGB on 6/14/2010 & rated 92 points: Drinking well now and a big favorite from a dinner where we opened 10 different 2001 cabs/blends. Well balanced, very rich mouthfeel and excellent fruit flavors. Good nose and finish - all around a success. (3493 views)
Tasted by Drewine on 12/30/2009 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 2-3 hours. Very polished and nice balance of dusty earthiness/red fruit/acid but a little simple and also agree that it will just diminish from this point forward. (4166 views)
Tasted by ejca on 12/14/2009: agree with johnnyvio, good but think it is not going to get better (3922 views)
Tasted by JohnnyBark on 10/26/2009 & rated 90 points: Hadn't had a bottle of this for a couple years as it was sleeping in the cellar. Nice nose with cocoa tar and plum. Palate is decent but simple. Not a long finish. Hopefully it improves with age but I have a feeling this is the best this wine can achieve. (619 views)
Tasted by johnwine on 12/31/2008 & rated 88 points: This is a very well constructed Cab that has not yet come into its own. Wait at least two to three years to try it again after it has emerged from a dumb period.

I had this wine again on 10-7-09. It is starting to open up with an intense aroma of tart cherries and berries on the nose. The taste is very concentrated with flavors of blackberries, cherries and kirsch. There is some mushroom and a hint of truffle. All in all it is coming right along and should be revisited in another two to three years. (3691 views)
Tasted by PVTerroir on 11/9/2008 & rated 93 points: Drank this a few nights ago... from memory, this was absolutely beautiful. Splash decanted, bottle left open for a few hours...consumed 3/4s first night... beautiful soft fruit behind shedded oak, mocha, tobacco, minerals, floral elements, and currant. Finish goes on and on... (4404 views)
Tasted by babnik on 10/11/2008 & rated 93 points: Rich, lush cherry and fresh brewed coffee with wonderful earthy undertones. Creamy, mouth coating heft that makes one think of drinking hot chocolate. Nice oak structure. My first experience with this wine, I'd say it is just entering its prime drinking window but will continue improving and stay there for years to come. (4317 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 4/14/2007 & rated 93 points: High-end Cali Cabs with Bryan's Steaks (The Shaffer's): Sweet red fruit on the nose. Rich decadent fruit on the palate with brown sugar notes. Lifted palate presence, fine tannins and long full finish. Very well done a nicely balanced. (5772 views)
Tasted by winefool on 4/14/2007 & rated 92 points: Cali Cabs w/Bryans Steaks (The Shaffers): Full deep black red color. Big birght pale nose of lack fruit. Big black coffee fruit onthe palate. (5365 views)
Tasted by A&C on 3/30/2007 & rated 90 points: Sometimes timing is everything. We decided to order foie gras from a professional restaurant supplier. Oh my god, more nectar of the Gods than we could ever consume -- we could take a bath in seared foie gras. Anyway, with perfectly seared foie gras, the Andrus Reserve matched very well. The color is a light cherry. The nose is all twigs and barn. The palate is very nice -- layered, fruity, yet rich. Perhaps an unappreciated wine. Whatever the case, it paired perfectly with the Night of Death by Foie Gras. If you ever order Foie Gras from a restaurant supply company, keep in mind -- its made to service a restaurant for a month. Foie gras anyone? The highlight of the evening was the deseret service from the girls -- handcrafted menus, reserved tables, chocolate tidbits, and squeaky violins to match. Its a rough life, but someone has to live it. The backbeat goes on and on and on . . . . (4961 views)
Tasted by GolferChris on 5/20/2006 & rated 93 points: Nice day in Napa - Ceja, Pine Ridge and Merryvale Wineries (Ceja/Pine Ridge and Merryvale Wineries): Tasted at Winery. Wonderfully complex wine. Aromas of berry, toffee, vanilla and cocoa powder. Toasty oak, cherry, blackberry, vanilla and mocha flavors are wrapped in silky, lush tannins. Long, elegant finish of 40+ seconds delivers flavors of cocoa and brown sugar. Very deep and complex wine. (6391 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/18/2005 & rated 89 points: Day Trip to Napa (Napa Valley CA): Tasting at winery. Moderate black fruit to start with new oak spice aromas. Firm black fruit on palate, somewhat hidden behind today's tannins, so there is definitely upside from here if this is in an awkward phase right now. Certainly better 2009 forward. (1957 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/10/2004 & rated 91 points: Quick visit to Napa and Sonoma; 7/9/2004-7/10/2004 (Sonoma and Napa): Tasting at winery. Classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. Deep and intense aromas of black fruit and plenty of new oak. Dark berry, vanilla, chocolate, licorice, allspice on palate. Long finish. Hold to at least 2008 for slightly better integration. (2251 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
